Kids' Activity: Edible Mudpies

by Melissa Jaramillo and Julie Snyder

There is something about kids and dirt. They go together as comfortably as ducks and water.

Perhaps it's cold or rainy but everyone still wants to play in the dirt. Combine cooking with playing and have a great dessert as well as a therapeutic dig through the soil.

Crawling Critters

Make a batch of brownies. While still warm (not hot) press gummy worms into the top.

Simple Bucket of Worms

Make a batch of brownies. When cool allow each child to crumble their brownie into a paper cup and hide a couple gummy worms in the "dirt."

Worms in Dirt Dessert

You'll need *dirt* (crushed Oreo cookies or brownies), prepared chocolate pudding, cool whip, gummy worms and a dish. Layer the dirt, pudding and cool whip; ending with dirt. Place gummy worms on top.

Sand Scene Dessert

Use blond brownies and vanilla pudding and make as above. You can use gummy lizards or other desert critters to decorate this dessert!

Dirt Dessert

Use a lined flower pot or new sand pail for a dish. Crumble frozen oreo cookies, either in the blender or with a rolling pin. Combine 2 cup milk and 2 small packages vanilla instant pudding. When set, blend in 8 ounces cream cheese and 6 ounces cool whip. Layer beginning and ending with oreos. Feel free to hide a few worms *in* the dirt. Put a silk flower or new sand toy in the dirt and decorate with more gummy worms.

Have fun!
