In what can only be described as a tragedy, four-year-old Xander Vento has died.
Xander had been exhausted during the rescue of a three-year-old drowning girl and ended up sinking to the bottom of the pool.
After being pulled out, he fell into a coma and was hospitalized this past Monday afternoon. His parents made the tough decision to take their son off life support this past Thursday.
According to the spokeswoman for Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, Xander died on Friday afternoon at the hospital.
The family has decided to donate their son's organs, and a fund has been created to help them pay for their medical expenses. By Friday afternoon, the fund had collected nearly $35,000.
His parents Cris and Misty Vento told CBS News that they hope their son's life will serve as an inspiration. His parents stated, "He was the angel in the pool who sacrificed himself to save another. And now he continues to give as an organ donor. We were blessed to have such a kind and caring boy as Xander who set an example for all of us and even now he will be saving lives by giving of himself."
As the family stated that they are appreciative of any support, we extend our condolences, support and prayers to the Vento family during this very difficult time.
As parents, we can't even imagine what Cris and Misty are going through unless we've been there ourselves. How do you keep your kids safe from situations like this one?
