In The News: Stranger Breaks Into House and Nurses the Resident's Baby
Imagine waking up in bed and finding a strange woman by your side nursing your baby! Yes, nursing your baby! This is exactly what happened to a woman in Brookings, South Dakota.
The mom called the police early Sunday morning when she discovered the strange woman trying to get her two-month-old to latch onto her breast. Thankfully, mom was able to get her baby unharmed.
Authorities say that the woman allegedly came into the resident's home while she and her baby were sleeping and treated the home as her own until police arrived.
Police Lt. Derrick Powers said, "After the resident called police, she found the suspect lying in her bed." Powers added that alcohol may have played a role in the incident.
The woman, 24-year-old Rebecca Silva has denied the allegations. She told the Associated Press that the incident never happened and that she had been invited into the home, having met the resident the night before. According to the alleged burglar, "I did not break into her house. She invited me in. She gave me her pajamas. She lied to the cops that I broke into her house. I did not try to feed her baby. That didn't happen."
Further, Ms. Silva said she recalled arguing with the resident, who allegedly told the police she was woken up by dogs.
Charged with the misdemeanor of unlawful occupancy, Silva's trial is set for April 30th.
Although the facts are in dispute, the mere thought of something like this happening is horrifying. How would you react to anyone, even someone you know, trying to breastfeed your baby?
