I am getting really, really impatient to meet Baby Boy! I know I still have 4 months and I need to hold my horses, but I just want to hold him and cuddle him and kiss him and smell him. I bet he's the cutest thing! He's been so active lately, it makes me want to reach in there and tickle his little belly! October can't get here fast enough!
We went and toured the birthing center yesterday, and neither Tim nor I were very impressed. It was nice, but a lot of what they said on the website wasn't true. For instance, the website said that you deliver and then stay in postpartum recovery in the same room, but that's not true. Three hours after delivery, you're supposed to move to a different section (which is just around the other side of the place) and a different room.
They also made it sound like there were rooms that had either bathtubs or showers and jacuzzis. But when we got there, it seems that there are rooms that have bathtubs with jets (but they're REALLY narrow -- narrower I thought that the one we have at home), and there is ONE common jacuzzi that all laboring women can use. There are only about 4-5 rooms, but if there happens to be another woman in the jacuzzi at the same time as when I want it, I'm out of luck.
Also, I talked to the lady who was doing the tour (she's not a nurse or medical personnel), and she was all about the epidural, drugs, OB, etc. I asked her what she could tell me about their midwivess and she didn't really know about their alternative birthing options -- so I'm guessing not a lot of people request that.
She said their cesarean rate was 30%, and when I blanched, she said, "But we only do them when the doctor thinks it's necessary! We don't do them for convenience or anything like that, so it's actually pretty low." I just gave her a "Are you crazy?" look, so she quickly moved on from that.
She asked me if I plan to get an epidural, and I said no, I want an all-natural birth. So she smiles and says, "Wow! You're a brave woman!" I just glared at her. I told Tim while I'm in labor, comments like that will not be helpful. She might as well have said, "Are you nuts?!"
Anyway, she gave us a card to call the midwife, and I'm going to talk with her and see how well we jive. Apparently she has a very, very low episiotomy rate (1%) so I'm guessing (and hoping!) that her clients have lower CS and intervention rates as well.
But if I don't feel like I'll be well looked after and advocated for, we are definitely not going with these people. So far they're looking just like a fancier version of a hospital, so I'll be interested to know what views the certified nurse midwife has of natural birth.
