Sandy's Surprise -- Things I'd Never Do

Read All of Sandy's Surprise -- A Pregnancy Journal

I think Tim is feeling the time crunch, because yesterday I noticed him throwing clothes and bottles of water into a duffle bag. I asked him what he was doing, and he said, "Just starting to get our hospital bag ready!"

I was shocked and amazed, because usually he is one to leave everything till the very last minute. But with the whole pregnancy and birth thing, he's been even more on the ball than me! I wasn't even thinking about the hospital bag at this point; although, I was on my birth board and it appears that a few women do have their bags ready.

I don't know if I'm in denial or what, but sometimes I really hate planning and preparing for the Big Day. I wish I could just go from where I am now to when the baby's 2 months old, because all that stuff in the middle is so filled with the unknown.

But Tim, I am glad to see, is really taking to all this like a champ. He goes over the minute details of the day that I try to bury deep in my psyche so I don't have to think about them and makes me talk about it. I am so glad he does this, because I feel more reassured now about all of it than I did when we first started out.

I think I just need to accept the fact that there is no way I can know exactly how this is all going to pan out, and just trust that all the reading and preparing we're doing now will pay off in the end.

Although the pain of birth doesn't really make me that nervous, the discomfort and pain of postpartum recovery does! Weird, huh? I think that's because I've always heard good things about birth, and bad things about PP recovery. So it's something that I'm really dreading. I just hope that I can get away without too much tearing. I think that will make things a lot more bearable.

You know, when we were adopting, I made a list of things I thought I'd never do as a parent. I wanted to compare it with when we brought the baby home, to see how many of those I ended up reneging on. I thought it would be fun to do a similar one about pregnancy. These are the things that I used to think I'd never do in pregnancy:

  1. I'll never stop shaving my legs just because I'm too tired or big to do it comfortably. *Haven't broken this one yet!*

  2. I'll always dress up in cute maternity clothes when we go out and leave the big t-shirts at home. *Broke this one!*

  3. I'll never eat unhealthy junk food just because I crave it. *Hahaha, broke this one!*

  4. I won't gain more than 30 lbs by the end of the pregnancy. *Snort -- yeah, let's just say I've already broken this one! But I'm blaming it on a big baby -- that's on authority of the MW and OB!*

  5. I won't be a crazy hormonal monster towards Tim or others. *Didn't break this one -- I asked Tim yesterday for confirmation. I don't think he'd lie... unless he was afraid I'd unleash the beast on him?? Hmm... *

  6. I'll remain active throughout the pregnancy. *Mostly true... I have slowed down a LOT since second trimester and even the beginning of third, but I am still mostly faithful to my walks.*

So I see I've broken my fair share of pregnancy commandments! It'll be interesting to see how many of the baby commandments I break... I'll have to dig out that list and post it here one day. Then we can compare on the baby's first birthday!
