This may be wierd, but I think you ladies may be the best resource to ask. My son will be having surgery on the 27th. They will be doing a carotid-subclavian bypass, but they will be using his internal iliac artery (this is what supplies the blood to your reproductive organs and other areas down there). I know what to expect for the bypass portion, but I have never had abdominal surgery nor do I know anyone IRL who has really. My DH and I were discussing what clothes (or more appropriately PJ's) to bring him for the hospital and what to bring for him to wear home. It dawned on us all his underwear will most likely rub on the site where they will be taking the artery out of his tummy. I've seen you ladies discuss clothing bothering you for a bit afterward and I'm wondering what I should do. DH thinks we should buy bigger underwear so it sits higher. Does that seem like a good idea? The other option we discussed was no underwear. But will his sweats (we won't even attempt jeans) bother him too? He is VERY slow at recovering and the pain I am fairly sure will bother him since he's never had tummy surgery before. Anyway, thank you in advance for your help.
My Mum went and bought me a pair of granny undies (super high waist) after my c section, they were good, but all my low cut ones worked as well, I just folded down if they bothered me. I found nighties more comfortable for awhile because the waist band on pj pants did bother me, even my soft fold now maternity ones.
Have you asked the doctor how big the abdominal scar will be? If they can do that part laprosopically it might not be very large at all. But to answer your questions, I had no problem with my underwear since my incision was very low. The internal iliac artery is down by the groin so I don't think it should interfere too much with his underwear, either. Pants were OK if I was standing, but they really irritated me when I was sitting because of the extra fabric folds right there. I spent my entire post-partum in snap-front sundresses, which probably won't work for a little boy, LOL. Maybe a night shirt or long t-shirt? I think any kind of soft, non-bulky pants would be OK if they are large enough that he can "untuck" them from the leg fold when he's sitting down. Hope that makes sense, and good luck with the surgery!
Unfortunately they will be doing the full incision. They will be using the artery and don't want to risk damage. They said they will be going in as if going to his kidney's in his tummy. They pointed to the area right next to where I would expect a c-section scar.
Still keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers! I agree with Stacey that you may wish to consider some nightshirts (and maybe a robe to help keep him warm.) I did a quick search though and was having trouble finding many options. I did stumble upon these when searching for boys' hospital gowns that could work: Hospital Gowns for Kids
Maybe try boxer underwear in a size larger as those would be less constrictive?
My only other thought is to call a local children's hospital and ask for advice from the nurses on a surgical floor.
Please keep us posted as you're able!

I had someone tell me that what may bother him the most is changing positions where anything on the bottom (underwear or pants) would rub when changing positions which is why we thought of footy pj's since there really wouldn't be anything to rub really. I didn't even think about the robe. I will definitely be taking one for him. I figured in the hospital I'd let him go commando with just a hospital gown for the top but the robe I think will make him feel "safe" as he prefers to be covered up. Thank you for those suggestions.
