Default Can someone explain my data plan to me?

I have no idea what this all means. My husband has a smartphone but he's clueless about it. We have 1 GB of data usage available each month. I know that means one gigabyte, which the handy data usage calculator tells me is roughly 10 hours of streaming videos or 65 hours surfing the web or posting about 3,000 photos to social media. He does none of those things on the phone. We haven't loaded any apps. He doesn't stream music, basically he hasn't done anything to justify having a smartphone, LOL!

But as I was dealing with Verizon today about them shutting off the phone despite having money on the account (again!) I noticed on the usage details that he's logging 1436 minutes of data usage every day. Verizon said that means he's got something connected to the internet all the time, maybe running in the background, so we need to figure out what that is. But now I'm wondering, how does 1436 minutes of usage time equate to gigabytes on our data plan? Can anyone explain this in plain English?

1436 minutes/daily is roughly 1/3 of a gigabyte. Clear as mud? There are usually programs pre-loaded on your phone that use data, and this is how cell companies make money but charging you for the data. What type of phone and I can tell you how to go in and see what is running.

Thanks! It's an LG Optimus and I've been told it runs on Android Gingerbread.

The following website will walk you through the steps much easier then I could explain. Don't worry if you are not a sprint customer as it is the phone that you are dealing with not the cell provider.

Thanks! That was very helpful. Mine was "settings" from the menu, then "applications" then "running services." There were four different Google Map things running, and a Google Music player, and another Google something. I kept the main Google Services since it said that was running the calendar & something else that seemed important. There are still other things running but at least I cut down the biggest offenders!

My husband and one of my older sons have that phone (thanks to a buy 1 get 1 free deal!) They have an app on theirs to easily show what is running and be able to 'kill' it off. It doesn't show the necessary services (like those you chose to leave running like the calendar, etc.), but only those you can turn off without messing up your phone. It is just easier to get to vs. digging through settings (and was free.) Let me know if you want to know which one they have.

On my phone (also a smartphone), I have a widget that is called "Active apps" that I turned on. I can see at a glance those things that are running. Not only do they cost you $ they also drain your battery faster!
