Carseat HELP! ***updated***

Big thanks to everyone! We got the Nautlius today!!! Awesome seat! He fits SOO good in there.. and it is pretty easy to adjust, which i was really stoked on!!!!

I am in a pickle here!

Just found out that my 3 year old's carseat has expired. Great. Bad news is, he is at 33 lbs...and will be 4 in July.He honestly has been gaining SO slowly I can't even GUESS when he might make the booster seat requirements! I am afraid he will shoot up and out and leave us in the dust with a carseat he can't use.

I need help deciding WHICH carseat would work best for our situation?

Thanks in advance!

ETA: I just saw the price on the Britax Marathon. Holy Shoes. Umm.. anything ELSE that might work would be fantastic Lol That is a little out of my price range.

Same price point but Britax makes a carseat that converts into a booster seat (we have it) which might justify the expense if you know you're going to get more use out of it.

Good luck finding something though.

Thank you. Sorry, but I won't pay the Britax prices. They are outrageous. More expensive does not necessarily mean superior quality. I am not being snotty, I promise. But with 3 kids and being a SAHM, there simply is not room in our budget for a $300 carseat.

I am looking at this: The Graco Nautilus.

Does anyone have any experience with this seat?

I completely understand the 3 kids and a tight budget (I'm in the same boat!). I have read great things about that seat too. If you can do some research you'll see its on par with the Britax if I remember correctly with ratings.

Awesome thank you! It is so good to hear from "real people." I am always leary of the online reviews!! Never know if they got paid to say so or not, KWIM?

Joee,

We have the Graco My Ride65 and I like it. I can share that in forward facing still using the 5 pt harness it is tilted "back" very slightly vs. straight up. We do have it latched with the tether anchor and lap strap. I just recently turned it around forward facing for our 2.5 year old but did test our 4 yr old in it for sizing just as a future reference point for expected growth.

If you have any other questions let me know. I will share that I do wish that we had not purchased the pink (pictured in the link.) I know (or doubt! LOL) that you'd buy that one for your little one but just in case someone else has a girl and is considering, do keep in mind that it does show dirt easily.

HTH!

I have *not* used it w/o the 5 pt. harness or taken apart to see how it would be as the backless booster. Rear-facing, it was great!

LOL! I dunno... It might be worth it to see Everits reaction to a pink flowery carseat LOL! I will prolly end up with the black... best color there is for a carseat hands down!

DUH! Forgot... THANK YOU! I think this may be the one for us... and lucky for me it is in stock at our local Target. I hope there is one on display so I can sit Everit in it!

We bought ours from Target too. I have to share that I hate hate hate many "department store" type displays now. THey have them either up too high or the straps locked with tie downs so you can't test until you get it home. I get that it is likely because of (insert NICE expletive here) people that probably took seats apart...... but sheesh!

Good luck!

WHAT? They do? Awww bums.. I hope thats not the case here. Thats how we picked Everits first convertible (now Dalton's seat.) We were able to find the one his little chubs fit in the best LOL! Who knew that "chubby" baby would be such a TINY preschooler?

Nautilus is FF only, just to clarify. We have one and I like it quite a bit. My 6 year old uses it with the 5 point harness. He is on the highest setting but he also has a long torso.

We also have a Britax Regent. The Nautilus is much easier to install and buckle. The only thing I didn't like is the buckle between the legs always falls under my kid so I always have to dig it out from under him if I am doing the buckling.

We have the nautilus in a bucket seat but it also worked well in my husbands taurus (bench seat).

I have owned two Britax and really loved them mostly for comfort reasons and because they are made in USA. However, I really like the Nautilus and feel it is good quality. I would buy another one if we needed one Smile

I would suggest checking out Craigslist. You might be able to find exactly what you want for half the price!

Hi Joee *waves* I have heard great things about the Nautilus. I have the Alpha Omega and we love it, but it is not at all compact lol. Gosh it takes up a lot of space.

I'd personally be careful about used carseats though because you just never know if it has been in an accident or not, ya know? I am always scared about that. I know a girl IRL who likes to sale stuff like that to make a buck and doesn't care about the safety of other people. It's just so risky.

ANGIIIEEE!!!

Thank you! It looks like I may have found the carseat we need then!! Smile awesome!!! I love this place!!

And yeah, I have to agree... Craigslist is SO Sketchy... just the other day in my local there was a lady selling EXPIRED Pedialyte! I mean, she said it was expired and everything!!! And only $1 a piece.. tell me wHAT she needed those $3 for so badly??? I had half a mind to give her $5 just to take it down LOL!!!

I actually bought the Graco Nautilus 3 in 1 about a month ago. Eli is almost 6 but he's only 35 lbs, and won't be ready for the booster portion for some time (he has problems with weight gain obviously too) since he has some special needs. I honestly love it. I think it's been the best at strapping him in as snug as he is suppose to be. I bought mine at Wal-Mart. I don't think you can go wrong. It went together great. Seriously I actually wish I would have had these for all my kids right after the infant seat was done. HTH

I dont know about Target, as we dont have them here, but I know places like Toys R Us, Sears, The Bay will let you take the carseat out and try it in your vehicle if you ask. They will take it out of the display for you. I know Walmart wont though, but you could always go to a different store to try the carseat and then buy wherever has the best price. If you feel bad doing that, many places will price match on bigger items like this Smile

Hmm.. We do have a Sears here! I may just do something like that. Although, I do believe based on opinions here I think this is gonna be the seat for us!!

I do wish we had a BRU so I could get a small trade in on the old one though!

We have two Graco Nautilus seats. We love them. My 8yo still rides in the 5-point harness. He is short and we have gotten more use out of the 5-point than others would. It has been a lifesaver because we currently have 3-across in our Camry. Two Sunshine Radians and his Nautilus. A booster will not fit in any position between the two Radians. We are saving for a minivan. Biggrin

Oh---Just know that the Nautilus is not a tiny carseat. It is not huge though. It obviously lets us fit 3-across in our car.

Excellent! I do have a van (LIFESAVER!!! I hope you get one SOON!) so I have the room for a larger seat... the only thing that bothers me is the placement of the seatbelt buckles... they literally like hit EXACTLY on the edge of our current seat... I am hoping the base IS a little more narrow with this one!

BRU online has the dimensions of all the carseats. I had to use those to figure out what would fit in our car. It will at least tell you if the base on the Nautilus is a tad smaller than your current seat. It seems like none of the FF to Booster convertibles are very narrow. All carseats seem to be getting larger though. I swear they were not this bulky when my DS was a baby. Biggrin

Stephanie! THANK YOU for correcting me!! I actually was coming to fix this as I realized this morning that our car seat is actually the Graco My Ride 65..... NOT the Nautilus! (I have corrected my review above to reflect the correct model. Joee, I'm sorry! I remembered that I had done a lot of research on the Nautilus and had gone to the store torn between these two. I ultimately decided as I was not comfortable at the time turning our little one around and wanted more time RF. We did end up with the similar looking MyRide -- which btw, I DO love. If buying solely for forward facing though I would have gone with the Nautilus.

Again, thanks for correcting me. No excuse as the only similarity between the one you linked and the one I own is that they both are by Graco and both were brown and pink. Sheesh.

If you get paid in time, Target has them for $125 this week. Only 2 patterns I think but they look nice enough.

One of my BFFs has the Nautilus and she also loves it. Just to make you feel ever better about your purchase. Check Albeebaby.com as well... I just got a different Graco seat on there for $60 + $5 shipping!
