NOTE: Child death mentioned
This happened here in Houston earlier this year.
Do you think she should be charged with murder if she wasn't there to actually commit the murder? Thoughts on the entire ordeal?
That is horrible!
I am not sure it counts as felony murder though. (I thought felony murder meant premeditated? Or is felony murder when someone dies when you are committing a felony, even though death wasn't the intention?)
Child abandonment, definitely. And criminal negligence should be added in there.

Not sure if this is everywhere or just in WA state, but 1st Degree Murder I believe has to be premeditated. I know they changed some laws here and it ended up messing with inmates prosecutions and they had to take them all back to court because they had to be premeditated. Anyway, I don't care what the charge she needs to be locked up and hung by her toes. Those poor babies.
I want to know what made her believe it was OKAY to do errands leaving 7 kids alone in the house. I work in child care and I can tell you right now, her ratio is OVER and you can't leave children alone for whatever reason!!! Was she even licensed to be running a "child care" facility in her home? Did she have a house inspection prior to operating her facility?
The time line sounds fishy too -- she left to go to the store and shortly after leaving a fire broke out?
How about Child Neglect causing Death.

I cannot believe she was caring for SEVEN children!! Here in the UK, I think it's 3 kids to 1 adult if you are a childminder. That is just crazy. If I was one of them kiddies parents, I would want her to go down for 4 counts of first degree murder, however, I don't think she planned on this happening. She should be slammed for manslaughter on 4 counts and gross neglagence for sure.

I luurrrrrve to lurk!
If it was my child - I would want to see her get the worst possible punishment.
And really - who leaves hazards like hot oil on the stove when watching kids?! Of course one of the kids could have accidentally turned it on but I would want to know why it was there to begin with. And even if the children didn't die - they could have been injured really bad by that with or without her there. As a child care provider you need to go through extra measures to make sure your home is safe.
