Laboring on "Labor Day"

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. For us mommies though, Labor Day might take a whole different slant!

Help us put together our own Pregnancy.org "Labor" day article by answering one or more of the following below:

What was your funniest "labor" memory? (Yes, we know there are some!)

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor?

While it may seem like an oxymoron, what did you do to relax while in labor?

For our September moms - did any of you actually "labor" on Labor Day? Share your story!

My mom laboured on Labour day and the end result was my brother who is now turning 56 Biggrin As my mom has alzheimer's I can't ask her for her experience.

I have a lot haha but the main one was shouting at DBF because he was wearing a jumper and I todl him to take it off because he was making me feel hot! lol.

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor?
I was excited to meet my baby!

While it may seem like an oxymoron, what did you do to relax while in labor?
I had to have everyone stop talking, it was the only way I could relax. All the noise just hightened the pain I was in when contracting.

What was your funniest "labor" memory? (Yes, we know there are some!) Hmm, well with my DS#1 when my bag of waters was broken I sat up to get my epidural and so much fluid came out the nurse jumped back and began laughing hysterically. She said "I've been a L&D nurse for 20 years and I have never seen that much fluid!! Clean up in isle 9!!!" I started laughing so hard even more fluid came out! They had to get a mop and bucket to clean it all off the floor. I admit I was a little embarrassed too

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor? Well I had to be induced with both of my first two so I knew labor was coming fast. With my DD I was terrified but excited. With DS#1 I was more confident and excited.

While it may seem like an oxymoron, what did you do to relax while in labor? With DD when I was in early labor I kept trying to walk around. Since I was on pit they didn't want me wandering around so I kept making excuses to go to the bathroom. I sat on the toilet FOREVER just letting my waters drip in to the toilet. The constant drip and the feeling that I was dry and not wet and uncomfy helped a bit.

For our September moms - did any of you actually "labor" on Labor Day? Share your story! I did not labor on labor day with my DS#1 (9/16). I knew he would be late and I'd need to be induced so for me I knew I wouldn't labor on labor day. I do have a friend whose son was born a year after mine who did though. Her water broke Labor Day morning at a parade (bummer) and her DD was born that evening.

DS1 - I remember shouting at my DH because he was watching my contractions on the monitor... They were getting really painful at one point, and he made the comment, "Oh, that one wasn't as bad as the last one" because it showed up as a smaller wave on the monitor. I yelled at him that it was worse than the previous one and that the stupid monitor does not gauge my comfort level. And my mom had the nerve to tell me to be nice, LOL. I think she got kicked out of the room shortly after that.

DS2 - I progressed pretty slowly for the first few centimeters and then suddenly hit 10 out of the blue. My doctor wasn't even there and when they paged him, the nurses told me he got all stressed out because he was afraid he'd miss it. He ran in all flustered, saying he thinks he broke a few traffic laws, hahaha. And he's from Croatia and has a cute accent, so that made it funnier.

My best relaxation technique during labor was rocking my hips, having my DH press on my lower back (tailbone area), and deeeeep breathing.

I haven't had a Labor Day baby, but one of my very good friends is due with her first little boy on September 1, so maybe she will??

What was your funniest "labor" memory? Its funny now but at the time it wasn't funny at all. My DH was so nervous and stressed about becoming a dad that he was ghost-white and freaking out. He looked so sick and kept saying he was about to throw up. My mom and MIL went to get him food and the nurses brought him a puke bucket. A lot of attention was on him and I was the one laboring for 53 hours! When it was time to try to push he was so weak he could barely stand so he laid on the couch in the room and watched. When it was time for a csection he didn't think he had the strength to go in there with me. LOL - Men!

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor?
OMG OMG OMG - YAY! I was so excited to feel contractions and to see what this while L&D thing was like. Oh the joys of being a FTM - Ha!

While it may seem like an oxymoron, what did you do to relax while in labor?
I got in and out of the tub and shower 3 times at home. Then my OB had me take tylenol PM and sleep through it. I tried the birthing ball and tried to relax but I was way too excited.

People always tell you that when you're feeling the urge to push it almost feels like you are about to have a bowel movement. I kept telling everybody I have to go #2 and they kept insisting it was just the pressure from the baby. So I told DH that he had to look at my behind and see if he could see anything coming out because I just knew I was having a bowel movement. So being the good husband he is he checked things out for me and said "Nope, I don't see anything." As I was pushing sure enough I had a bowel movement. At which point I yelled at everybody "See I told you I had to go!!!"

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor?
My labor was induced so I was pretty nervous in the days leading up to the induction. I guess it really didn't hit me until they broke my water and I was like this is it! Our precious baby girl will be here soon.

Just having my family/friends there talking to me was a huge help. It kept my mind of things to a certain point but once it got too unbearable I received an epidural.

With my first, there was this light switch to control the lights in the ceiling so that they can see really well when the baby is coming out. They switch was like a knob with had the shape of a body on the plate behind it, and it was located kind of right above the ligs...so it kind of looked like a huge penis lol!

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor?

I think it was that I wanted to clean my house

While it may seem like an oxymoron, what did you do to relax while in labor?

With my first, I wasn't very relaxed, but bouncing on a birth ball helped some. With my second, I did the Hypnobabies program and the techniques were extremely helpful for me!

With DS, it wasn't funny at the time, but makes me laugh now, but DH was running around all over the house to find stuff to go into the hospital bag because I hadn't finished packing it yet! Can't think of a funny moment with DD, her birth was very relaxing (for labor and all).

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor? With DS - "OMG, my hospital bag isn't packed!" With DD - "hmmm, these are contractions but they don't feel that strong."

While it may seem like an oxymoron, what did you do to relax while in labor? Hypnobabies and the tub helped a ton.

The nurse was trying to hook me up to the monitor but couldn't find a heartbeat. After her trying for 5 minutes, I told her I feel like I have to push. She moved the monitor as low as she could, found the HB, pulled back my panties and shouted "baby is crowning and for God's sake don't push!" Luckily, the OB, the NICU team, and DH walked in before the next contraction when I pushed and delivered.

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor?
1st labour
I felt the need to freeze all the leftovers in the fridge.
2nd (already in hospital because my water had broken)
They didn't pick up contractions on the monitor for the first 20 minutes. I couldn't believe it that I could be in so much pain and not be in labour. Luckily they decided that something was happening because I was obviously in agony and called the doctor to check me.

My second thought was for and epidural but for that they had to move me to the L&D and hook up the monitors so i never got far enough for them to order one

My contractions started intense, long and frequent both times. I keep thinking that it has to be over soon and just focus on each contraction, one at a time.

What was your funniest "labor" memory? My nurse came in and was trying to take my blood from my finger for a sugar check, but didn't quite know how to work the lancet and the things went flying across the room instead of pricking my finger, she tried two more times with the same thing happening and by then we were both in hysterics laughing lol! Oh, and another funny was I when one of the nurses knocked on my door and asked if I was ok, I said "Oh sure" and she thought I said "ten four"

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor? I was induced, but when my water broke all over the bathroom I thought well I suppose it's getting to that time to meet little man!

While it may seem like an oxymoron, what did you do to relax while in labor? I walked around the room & rocked in a chair before the epi.

When I felt my water braking, we were watching a movie in bed and I literally jumped out of bed shouting: Gaetan, my water just broke!!! We have a pretty high bed so DH said it was funny to see a very pregnant woman jumped out of bed so fast!

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor?

OMG are you serious?? It can't be that fast already??? Not for a first baby right???

While it may seem like an oxymoron, what did you do to relax while in labor?

Sit still and breath...

Definitely didn't have a funny moment in any of them (maybe this time around!). I only had the "very first thought" moment with my first baby, as the second and third ones were induced! My first thought was, "OMG I'm going to have to push a baby out... my freain' back is killing me... and I don't want a c-section!" (lol) And the relaxation came only with babies #2 and 3, because I had an epidural with each one of them!

#1.) I was pushing while the doctor was gloving up and all of a sudden, my contractions stopped. All I could say was 'oh no' over and over. Finally the nurse asked me what was wrong and in a completely panicked screech I told her my contractions were gone (I was going drug-free and could not WAIT to get the baby out, lol). She laughed and said 'dont worry...thats just mother natures way of giving you a little break before the baby comes out'. I know it doesn't sound funny, but it really was because you would have thought something was terribly wrong with the way I was acting. #2). I had a very talkative nurse that wanted to get in my face to remind me to breathe....finally I asked her to shut- up and get out of my face, lol...I was in a lot of pain.

What was your very first thought once you realized you were in labor?
#1) My water broke and all I could do was sit there and say to myself 'oh my God, oh my God...with a HUGE smile on my face and laughing. #2) I was induced. When the contractions started to pick up all I could think was...here we go!

While it may seem like an oxymoron, what did you do to relax while in labor?
#1) The shower and laboring on my hands and knees were the only things that made me feel a little better. #2) I had an epidural which didn't completely work, so breathing was my way of making it through.
