    Default Low Tone

I am wondering if anyone has experience with low tone? My youngest was at the NICU follow up clinic last week and I was told he had low tone. Tomorrow we have PT Eval.

    Thanks much in advance

    Hi Nicky

I have no experience with this and have never heard of it if I am honest. Is it a serious condition? Sorry you're having to deal with that!

My friend's son was born at 30 weeks - he was ultimately diagnosed with CP. His was a traumatic birth (emergency c-section, loss of his twin brother) - so I don't want to scare you.
I know it was awhile after his NICU stay (he was born early Aug, and came home late October) before this was noticed or became a concern.

Have you noticed anything of concern yourself?

It’s his muscle tone. He was born at 26 weeks and 3 days. He should have the gross motor skills of a 5 month old (that’s his corrected age v his actual age of 8 months old).

He was born at 26 weeks and 3 days. His birth was a bit tramatic as I was on bedrest at 21 weeks and we thought we were going to lose him. He was born due to placenta abruption. He spent 97 days in the NIC.

I haven’t noticed a lot myself. Being he was born early and getting early intervention I assumed Early Intervention would have mentioned something. They noticed him not doing certain things but said to work on things like tummy time, etc. Then we went to the NICU follow up clinic and they said he’s where a 3 month old is at.

He has a eval today and I am just wondering how much he will need and such.

My son was born Aug 1st and came home in November

My little guy had low muscle tone, he was born at 36w1d. He still has a bit of gross and fine motor delays but is a pretty healthy almost 8 year old. The OT in kindergarten picked him out as a preemie just by observing him. None of his delays have been severe. I just worked with him, trying to get him to put weight on his feet, etc.

I passed on your blog info to my friend (hope you don't mind) - to see if she could offer any words of wisdom, advice, suggestions - I'll let you know what she says. Without knowing much about your story her first words were to get him as much therapy as you can as early as possible - so sounds like you have those things lined up.
