Like you, only if I think it's going to stink or make things harder to clean up later (like stuff that is going to drip into the bin). I have an inside bin that I empty into the big recycling can outside.

Someone told me that you really don't need to at all, the chemicals they add to do the recycling stuff should get rid of all the stuff, but if there is too much junk left they have to add more chemicals and they don't like to do that. So it's not bad to leave it just annoying to the recycling company because it costs them more.

KY people are outrageously backwards when it comes to recycling, there is not a recycle center near us, so I don't recycle. Sad BUT, when we lived in MI, we did. I did rinse, because I didn't want the stink in my garage.

Yep, that's how it was in MI, you just had a garbage container and a recycle container.

I'm a bad for the Earth and don't recycle!!! To my defense, the dump we use doesn't have recycling there, the one that does is about another 20 minutes past the one we use. Extra 40 minutes on the road = more car emissions = I'm really saving the Earth by not recycling!

We recycle everything we can, and rinse it all out first (also crush my cream cartons flat to save space and stop them blowing down the street on a windy day). We also have a composting program in our city, so every week that is picked up too. We are down to having garbage collected every second Friday, and even then I sometimes don't have anything for them to pick up, so I wait a month. This is especially true now that we are out of diapers.

yep, i rinse it all first, briefly. we also have recycling picked up along with our garbage and yard waste... the garbage container is the bigger of the two, but i wish it was the other way around! we always have leftover recycling that doesn't fit in the bin but never fill the garbage bin completely.

At my parents house I would always rinse out everything... and we would throw the lid away. Idk.... My dad grew up telling me that they wouldn't take it if it had the lid on it so we always rinsed it so it didn't stink up the house.

I don't rinse anything, but recycle everything I can. We also have 2 cans...I wish we had 2 for recycling, because we have WAY more than trash. I also have a compost bin in the back for most of the compost-able stuff. We're able to store our bins in an area where stink really isn't an issue.

We have weekly pickup for garbage and recycling and our city has a composting program, so we have that bin too. We do usually rinse before it goes in the container. We ended up with 3 recycling boxes, our compost and one garbage bag. Unfortunately, we rarely end up with just one bag of garbage, by the time you clean the litter for 3 cats and add in two in diapers (Alicia is mostly trained but we still have some pull ups) then that's a LOT of garbage! It fits in the one bin, but then it exceeds the weight limit!

I rinse everything. It is requested by our recycler, plus it keeps the garage from smelling.

I'm pretty lazy about rinsing but I do try.

Nicole, that's awesome your town has a compost program too.

I rinse everything out. Everyone in the house thinks I'm nuts for it, but our recycling only passes by once a week and it all has to sit in my house for that time. If we don't rinse it, it starts to smell or attract ants.

I usually don't rinse anything out, but I do take the caps off the water bottles (and throw those in the trash, per my dh).

Our composting program takes cat litter in the compost - you might want to check that, it reduces your garbage considerably!
