This was on the GDB here awhile back. I think it's totally depending on the child babysitting and the child being babysat. Obviously there are laws, but really, I think it should be a parents choice.

Em and I babysat our siblings together when we were 10ish. I was babysitting other people's kids at 12. Including babies. But I had lots of friends who were no where near ready to babysit siblings, let alone other people's kids.

The mom in the article who was charged...I think that is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. A 14 year old watching a 4 year old for a half hour? I see nothing wrong with that.

ITA with Jordan. I started baby-sitting the one year old across the street from us when I was 10, but my parents were always home at the time. By the time I was 11-12, I was baby-sitting all around town... but it really does depend on the kid. When I was 15, I 'baby-sat' two boys who were 11 and 13 and they literally did homework the entire time I was there. It was a totally sweet arrangement - their mom ordered pizza and left a check for it and the boys did their homework and i read a book. Biggrin I think she just wanted peace of mind... but it did feel kind of odd to 'baby-sit' kids who were almost my age.

I was babysitting my sister and my cousin by the time I was 10, the little girl down the street by 11 and half of the kids in my church by 12 so I really think it depends on the child.

Although I haven't "needed" to pay a babysitter since we have two sets of grandparents and two aunts who live locally and babysit for free my first back up babysitter right now is 13 and I would have n problem leaving her with both kids. She is responsible, and has completed the Red Cross certification for babysitting and I know if she needed anything her parents are less than 2 miles away and would be here in a heartbeat.

I think it's crazy this mom was charged. Did anything happen to the little one while the big one was watching? Did the older one do something irresponsible? If not I don't see the problem.

Totally depends on the child's abilities, etc, not the age. There are 14 year old's who are dimwits, and 14 year old's who could get into college, with a whole range in between. I think it's ridiculous to issue a citation based off of age alone.

I agree with this.

here the legal age is 12 or 13 to babysit I can't remember, I guess there needs to be a legal age. But yeah, there are some real morons in their 20's I wouldn't trust let alone some 13 year olds, but then there's some that I would trust more than Bill LOL

Completely agree with Julie! I started babysitting in 5th grade and through middle school it was literally my life. I was probably 12 babysitting 4 kids including a newborn, but my house was literally a few down, and well it was what I loved to do!

I agree with Julie too!

I leave Jayden home with my older 2 when I run quick errands. I just started doing this about 2 months ago. My son will be 14 this summer, and I completely trust him to watch Jayden.
