do you take the elf out and put him on the shelf before you even read it to the kids or is it incorporated into story????

thought and ideas

thanks in advance

I wanted to get one of these last year but didn't. Thought about getting one this year, but haven't. LOL Knowing me I'd forget to move him.

Peg, I did the samething! Mine should be here tomorrow! I found some hilarious things for him to do! ..like have him sitting on the toilet with green food coloring and sprinkles inside LOL! It does have a story with it! It was going to be our first present to open for our 25 books but will have to be our second Smile

Yeah Paika appears on the mantle when Owen is out of sight (maybe bathtime or dinner) and before bed we read the story then by morning Paika is somewhere new...
I also set the book on the mantle for the first night.

Did you name him Paika or Owen???

I told Landon our own personal elf was coming and he is just elf until we give him our own special Christmas name! So we will see what Landon comes up with! lol

Our elf, Dexter appeared on the shelf along with the book on Thanksgiving morning. But if you watch the movie, the box arrives on the porch. You're not supposed to touch him or he loses his magic (according to the book) so I thougth it best to have him just arrive.

Delaney is having a lot of fun with it. But I think I'm having more fun. Biggrin

I got one last year and Colby named him Teetah. Got no clue on that one lol! Last year and today, I took it out of the box when he wasn't around and put it out somewhere. Told him he must have brought the book with him. I don't think he really remembered him from last year, and was PISSED when I told him that Teetah knew what he was doing and would tell Santa lol! So we read the book before bed a couple times a week. The hardest part for me was remembering to move him every night lol!

We got one this year too - Tyler named him Elfie. I had been telling him that Santa called and was sending down a helper and then one night i had snuck him onto the dresser and i walked in and acted all shocked. I said, when did he get here?? Did you see him come in?? Tyler was fascinated Smile So we read the book and he seemed amused. DH and I have fun moving him every night and Tyler has fun finding him in the morning.

This morning though, I had stuck him on the bannister and he fell off and was face down on the floor. Tyler said oh no!!! So I "asked" Elfie if it was ok to touch him just this one time so I could get him off the floor. When I went to reach for him, Tyler said, "we can't touch him!!! He'll lose his powers!!" LOL Poor kid...he asked a few times today if he still had his magic. I think he'll be relieved to see him in a different place tomorrow.

I heard of setting him in a scattering of M&Ms to make it look like he was eating candy...I'll have to check out some of the other ideas.

I picked up Sam at BN on Black Friday with my coupon and had him arrive while Nicholas was still out with DH shopping. He was just sitting on the breakfast bar with the book when Nicholas got home so we read the book then.
One of my friends from high school won the trip to the premiere of the movie a few weeks ago so I was already a fan of their facebook page (so I could vote for her), but today they posted a link to the blog and it has what to do if your elf gets touched accidentally http://elfontheshelfblog.com/ it says to tell him you're sorry, sing your favorite Christmas song and sprinkle them with cinnamon and belive in your heart in all things Christmas. I read that just in time because today Sam was hanging on the thermostat to turn it down (to make it cold like the North Pole) and he fell off so I couldn't leave him in the middle of the floor so we did all that, the kids ate it up. Nicholas said Sam smiled when he heard Santa Clause is coming to town!
Now, off to move him while I'm thinking about it. I think I'm going to steal the toilet idea, that will crack Nicholas up. The night before last Sam made snowmen out of marshmallows, it's going to be a fun month!

I just got a Barnes & Noble email, They have a coupon code 20% for Elf on the Shelf, also they have 30% off Thomas the Train stuff. Here's the link if anyone is interested.

Well, it appears it's only an offer for their email list, because I can't get a non-specific link. If you want the email LMK and I'll forward it to you.

Shannon - I got ours at Target on 355. I paid full price for it there though...like an idiot  But it had been one of those days with my favorite 3 yr old, where I would have probably paid 2x that amount
