Fashion Divas in here!!!!

MIL called last night talking clothes and totally lost me on some things.....

Like her idea of riding boots and my idea of riding boots are two totally different things. Mine are the western style that cowboys wear on a horse....like cowboy boots...what exactly are 'riding' boots in the fashion world?

She is also going to send money for me to get clothes and is talking Chicos and Coldwater Creek.....are there any other sites that I might look at that have cruise type resort wear for 'dressing' up for dinner......she is also going to let me borrow cardigans and shawls....jewelry............so that is no problem.

She is also talking on getting me a pair of UGGs......are their any knock offs of UGGS that arent as expensive....I feel totally guilty on spending more than $50 on a pair of shoes......especically since after the cruise they probably wont get much wear..........

Keep in mind this is a lady who is a CEO/CFO and ONE of her work suits probably cost more than my entire wardrobe combined..........

riding boots are like this

Chicos is expensive stuff. but really good quality.

Not sure about the last parts...not a big fashionista. But...riding boots are the style that equestrians wear:

Definitely very different than regular cowboy boots. You can buy riding boots in stylish versions meant for normal everyday wear, rather than actual horseback riding.

This is a popular riding boot that my friend wants:

That's nice that your MIL is sending money. Woohoo! Enjoy the shopping, YOU deserve it!
Don't feel guilty at all (about the Uggs) - get them, you'll love them.

Check out macys.com, nordstrom.com...for some dressy wear. Biggrin

also typically you wear jeggings or skinny jeans with the boots as well...

Just a personal preference but for dressier events I think boots with no buckles are better, and ones with a small heel are also better for dressy events.. I would not wear buckle flat boots to a fancy resturant. Again personal opinion

About the Uggs, they will get a ton of use after the cruise. You have a pretty serious winter season where you live, I can't believe you haven't already fallen in love with these feet warming boots. Wink

IMO, Chicos is a little too 'old' for you. Try Karen Kane at the better department stores, that's a designer. and the bigger stores have things on sale all.the.time. Also, Dana Buchman at Kohls is a fabulous trendy line.

thank you for the line mentions as I have no clue. I will go and look and see what I can find.

If you really think you're not going to get much wear out of stuff, personally, I'd hit Old Navy or Target.

Cheap, good enough quality, and I wouldn't feel bad if it ended up sitting in my closet for a long time. Or if you can get to a city with one, H&M fits the same bill, imo.

I agree with the Chico's thing, too. To me, a lot of their stuff is for Grandma's. Trendy Grandma's perhaps, but still Grandma's, lol. (Maybe I just think that 'cause my Mom likes it).

I think at chicos she was looking at the travelers line that is wrinkle free.
I know she mentioned a black dress....

So I am thinking the one she is talking about is either one of these.......
and my personal preference would be the longer dress.

And what brands of jeans do you wear? She is talking about a brand called 'not my daughter's jeans'.......

I am usually a levis or gloria vanderbuilt amada style jean wearer. LOL

I am just on here to see what you get too - so exciting when it isn't you, lol!

I had never heard of Chico's (looked it up, liked it - obviously, I'm closer to grandma age, lol), and over here Karen Kane is a famous Canadian ballet dancer, - never heard of the fashion designer either - saw it is at Nordstrom's and have to love Nordstrom's for their easy-to-use web site, but we don't have one in Canada so when I was shopping for my brother's wedding I ended up getting it off eBay...

I think you are in the best place to shop, the US has amazing variety of choice, deals, and shipping is usually free. Anyway, that Karen Kane clothing is nice but you have to be stick thin...I guess everything modeled by sticks looks too young for me, lol.

Not to be a pooper, but am I the only one who thinks Uggs are ugly? (Uggly, lol)? How can you wear those overgrown slippers on a cruise, or am I missing something??

Sorry my mom wears chicos all the time Smile

Not my Daughters jeans are sold at Nordy's and they are "curvy" style and a higher waist.. so they do not sit on your hips.. my mom has a pair and likes them.
if im not mistaken I think they run around 100 bucks which for "designer" jeans that is low... most are closer to 200.

I like the black dress you posted..

I heard not my daughter's jeans fit real well. I feel like I'm too young to wear those. Wink
I love my Hudsons - but they are pricey.
If you go to Kohls, (do you have one near you?) - you can get nice fashionable jeans - I believe Elle brand and Apt 9 or something like that for a good price.

Kristi, you need to listen to us and NOT take your MILs advice. She's trying to dress you in stuff her age range would wear. Wink

That traveler's line at Chico's is nice. I got some pieces for my Africa trip, but it isn't 'aged' like the rest of their stuff.

And 'Not your daughters jeans' are too old for you too, you wear that brand when you have a daughter that is in her 20's. Wink

I agree that a lot of Chico's is too old for you, MIL wears quite a bit of it, but there are pieces throughout that are younger too. One of my good friends works for Chico's, their headquarters is here and I go to the company store with her from time to time, the deals there are awesome. I just emailed her for you and the company store is closed until mid May (they are relocating it) otherwise I was going to offer to get you some stuff and mail it to you and save a bundle (all shirts $10, pants $15 and dresses $20!)
I agree, I loved my Hudson jeans, until they didn't fit anymore, but now I am liking my Apt 9 jeans. I also really like J.Crew and Banana Republic for easy to wear, but still nice clothes that would be cruise worthy.
Can't wait to see what you got!

Mel, Got it:wink:

I probably wont buy jeans until after my sisters wedding and about a month more of working out.

those not your daughters jeans sounds like they wouldnt fit me as I have NO HIPS......That is why hipsters (and then my muffin top that hangs over) dont work for me. I tried a pair of the 'sweetheart' cuts from Old Navy, and OMG they kept sliding down. SAY NO TO CRACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I will go to Kohls in June and just tell DH we need to make a special trip to shop...I dont think I am going to get any shopping done right away. I want to wait until after the wedding and I look smoking!!!!! LOL

I couldn't sleep last night so I decided what I thought you need:

1. Basic black skirt
2. Little black dress (I do like both the ones your Mom suggested)
3. Black slacks.
4. Black heels

All things that can be dressed up and dressed down as the occasion calls for.

If you find your way into a dept store, like Norstroms or Macy's, try on a few different style of DKNY jeans. There is a lot of stretch to them and they tend to sit inbetween the hip and the waist. Plus, I think I remember that youare little on the shorter side right? She makes a short length that is NOT petite, just the length of the leg is shorter.

Thanks!!!

does dillards or anyone else carry those. none of those are in the town where I shop.

the regular lengths dont work. I have a high waist and long legs. Sometimes the long length is too long and the regular lengths too short. I am average height of 5'6" and finding any jeans to work for me used to be a chore......(used to wear the Levis 512 long in 100% denim until they added spandex.) Around the ranch that thinner denim/spandex fabric doesnt last as long and well I just will have to not wear any of these new jeans around the ranch.......LOL.

Here lately I have been going to the mens dept at walmart and wearing the wranglers (that brett farve and Jeff are in the commercials for and not the 'cowboy' 13MWZs) and then they have the rustler brand.....those are like $15 bucks and dont cause the devastation when a barb wire rips a hole in them than a higher dollar pair. That is usually why I dont get the high high dollar jeans.

Yep, Dillards has DKNY too.

Seriously, I would kill for a pair of real denim levis that don't have spandex. I'm sorry, but all that spandex does not hold in the tummy pouch. It just expands right along with you.

You know those mens jeans dont have spandex....part of why I wear them. for some reason they dont put spandex in mens jeans.............. OMG could you imagine if they did???????????? ROFL okay not a good visual.

Yeah, but I so don't have a mans body. I do have hips and a butt, so mens jeans are a no go for me.
And yes hilarious visual on the spandex in mens jeans. There would be no hiding that woody then.

LOL on the spandex jeans - I have one pair and they are AWFUL. I should just get rid of them.

We are the same height, Kristi, I also have a high waist (more like no waist) and long legs - this used to be a good feature, but now I just look like a tired toad on stilts. Which aren't so thin anymore, lol. I assume you are younger than me, what with all this anti-grandma-wardrobe talk, and I sure hope you are less toad-y. Maybe you can take a camera to your shopping expeditions, lol.

Seriously, if you find anything you like, you have to share. It has been far too long since I bought anything for myself; I am still in a mix of supermarket clothes and maternity wear, I still wear nursing bras (which no longer fit), and we are planning a road trip this summer - I don't even have anything for a road trip, let alone a cruise, lol! KUP, even if you find a good new t-shirt.

I went to Chicos and got this dress:
http://www.chicos.com/store/browse/product.jsp?maxRec=43&pageId=2&productId=570017938&viewAll=&prd=Travelers+Ariel+Dress&subCatId=&color=&fromSearch=&inSeam=&posId=16&catId=cat40010&cat=Travelers&onSale=&colorFamily=&maxPg=3&size=

then I found a pair of black slacks and blue jeans at coldwater creek. I fit in a size four BTW, but got a 6 because I do plan on eating on the cruise.

http://www.coldwatercreek.com/product-detail/51731/57868/classic-holly-pants.aspx?colorid=030&refLink=pants.aspx

http://www.coldwatercreek.com/product-detail/47591/53805/classic-shapeme-jeans.aspx?refLink=jeans.aspx

Thanks to Kelly (chefkel) and her coupon. I hit a sale that was buy one get one 1/2 off at Coldwater Creek, then her coupon was $25 off a purchase of $100 or more. So my entire bill for the two pants at coldwater creek was $86.51. The dress was on sale too. I feel like I hit the jackpot.

now to find a few shirts, a pair of shoes to go with the black dress that isnt too dressy or too casual. MIL says she has jewelry, scarves (that just does not look like it is spelled right), and cardigans that I can borrow. So guess we will see.
