OT--Free Lunch Program--would you go?

Our area has a Summer Food Service Program that is put on with help from CYFD and the USDA. M-F any kid from 1-18 can walk up and get a free sack lunch.

It is from 11-1 M-F....on fridays they put in a sack full of non perisible snacks....it is also on the way home.......

A fellow mom at the grocery store was telling me about it and I found the article in the last paper to see more infor about it....the more kids that go, the chance of it continuing thru years......they dont check income or anything.......

We are in town every day for some activity or another............

If income is an issue, I wouldn't have one problem in the least taking part in the program. If money's not an issue (well, it's always an issue, but not a HUGE issue), I wouldn't do it.

They dont check your income at all. All you have to be is between 1-18 and whala free lunch.......no questions asked.

Oh but I mean a "self check" instead of them asking. I'm just personally big on only using resources if it's truly necessary. But that's really cool that they just let people decide on their own, and a great resource to have around!

#1 I do not need free food (If I did then I would do it)

#2 GENERALLY the food is sub par and not what I feed my family.. I like to know what goes into my food.

Like I doubt we would use it.....(unless it was time for pay day and a little tight).....

It is cool though if the needy truly are the ones benefiting......

I think it is made by the school cafeteria.......LOL

I wouldn't unless I truly couldn't feed my family. But then I have a huge, butt puckering session letting Jax eat school cafeteria food. Gives me the willies to think about all the preservatives and additives that go into that stuff. But, I'm weird, you knew that. LOL

Is it supposed to be for needy famiilies?

I probably wouldn't do it every day but if I were in town an lunch and had hungry kids, Heck yeah I'd do it. Unless it's supposed to be fore low income then I probably wouldn't.

Now, see I had just assumed that it was for needy families, but an 'on your honor' type of system. But, if it isn't specifically for needy families and it was just a summer community type of thing, and we were in town, I *might* stop for it.

Not gonna go into the nutritional merits of the food because I have no idea what they would be serving, but I checked out the website and if you were in town and McD's was the other option, then I think you should do it sometimes...I might would give it a try -- esp if my kids were the age of your older two. http://sparcs.sks.com/

From the information provided on the website, this food service is likely provided in your area because 50% or greater of the children are eligible for free and reduced lunch.

Ultimately, the program will be "judged" on how many children they serve. If money is tight until pay day, I would ABSOLUTELY do it if I were you. I would probably ask the site administrators if they give out all the lunches every day/have an abundance/have a shortage of meals. If they don't have enough for all of the kids who come and I could provide otherwise, then I would try to find something else for my kids. If they are serving children who's parents wouldn't (couldn't) find them anything else to eat, then I would want them to eat first.

I would definitely check it out! They offer it around here and if it were closer to us so we could walk there I would go any time the kids wanted to. Most of the time with programs like that, they get money from the govt in hopes that people will use the program and the funds will be well spent and not wasted.
