Random Question of the day: What is on your kitchen counters???

i ask this question because i look at these freaking cooking shows or anyshow with a kitchen and the counters are spotless without clutter!!!!

i also have a friend who's counters are ALWAYS spotless....they aren't coffe driners so not even a coffe machine or toaster on the counter.....no knives, mixer...nothing!!!!!! I'm sooo jealous....although now she has 1 year old twins and i haven't been over there lately other than for their birthday party which doesn't count ROFL

so anyway.......we have coffe machine, stand up mixer, toaster, salt, pepper shakers (nice ones) 3 different cooking oils (don't ask...dh's obsession) block knives, bowl with fruit, butcher block cutting board, 3 stainless steal containers, and a morter thinging that we got in st. lucia for our honeymoon......just seems like wayyyyy to much stuff........NEED TO DOWNSIZE

i spend my days off cleaning off the breakfast bar cause dh sh!ts it up with the kids stuff while i'm working....i swear everynight i come home from work there is not a freakin clear spot on it

so how clear are your countertops??????

cookbook stand
a jar of utensils
espresso maker
block knifes
5 jars of assorted pastas
salt and pepper shaker/grinders (nice ones)
stand mixer
coffee maker
toaster
on another counter is my microwave

ok that is alot!

I have 3 different counters plus an island. But they're not clear at all (I have a friend with clean counters and I, too, don't understand).

I have a George Foreman grill, Bread maker, Coffee maker (then the sink), Electric kettle lives in the corner which is empty space anyway then the Toaster Oven.

Two small counters on either side of the stove have a spinning spice rack, salt and pepper and oil and vinegar, a stainless steel container of cooking utensils and a knife block. On the island is a basket of fruit.

Peg - is your friend with the clean counters a cooker?

I have 6 separate counter areas. This is what is supposed to be on them

Counter 1: coffee machine and 2 decorative canisters
Counter 2: 2 decorative canisters and salt and pepper mills
Counter 3: stainless steel spoon rest, butcher block and electric can opener
Counter 4: Nothing
Counter 5: Fat Italian chef that holds a tray and a stainless paper towel roll holder
Counter 6: (really the snack bar) 2 tiered metal basket for fruit and the weather radio

What is really on my counters including all the above crap

Counter 1: a HUGE stack of bank statements and other such papers for tax purposes
Counter 2: a water gun, a Thomas the Train engine, a box of some holistic tea for healthy kidneys
Counter 3: M's monitor, a tape measure, my old camera, a bag of popcorn, 4oz stainless creamer carafe
Counter 4: 2 used dishtowels
Counter 5: dirty dishes, another dishtowel, canister of powdered sugar, a jar of salsa, and my drink
Counter 6: a container of grapes, a container of blueberries, a container of raspberries, a container of strawberries,
a pineapple, bunch of bananas, a bag of apples, a book, LeapPad, 1 mitten, Abigail's hair detangler, a box of hair bands, bottle of hand lotion.

one counter has all my fruit and some canisters ( i think when i redo my pantry, these will get put in there...)
another counter area has my toaster and toaster oven, and a compost bag right next to the sink, another area has my panini press and spices, and the small little area at the end is where dan keeps his stuff for work.....

And all this just did is totally depress me about the state of mot having my crap together with 2 kids. Seriously. I was just looking back at pics of Jax when he was a baby and my counters were always clutter free. Today it is a rare freaking occasion. I thought I had let go of this obsession, but guess I really didn't, because now I'm totally bothered about it.

I took a pic that I think includes my countertops either last night or today. I'll look and post when I get home tonight!
We have very limited countertop space and the girls eat most of their meals at the counter, so I try to keep it pretty clear...still - way too much crap!!

My kitchen is small and cluttered! I have a dish rack (no cupboard space to store it), coffee maker, microwave and toaster oven, canister of oatmeal on my countertop. On my "work" dresser, ie diy island, I have my stand mixer, a bowl of fruit, a HUGE popcorn maker that was an Xmas gift and I don't know where to put it. Also, somewhere in the kitchen is the compost container...DH moves it so I'm not sure where it is at the moment. Now, I'm not home...but I'm guessing that there are also 2 coffee cups, 4 or more sippy cups, 3 cereal bowls, 1 plate and assorted dirty cultery also sitting on my counter waiting for me to wash. I CANNOT wait to redo my kitchen!

ipad
baskets
coffee maker
coffee grinder
coffee bean jar
4 other random jars
more plants
paper towels
6 cutting boards
microwave that's covered with medicines
bottle thingy filled with bottles
junk bin (this is for DH so his CRAP (5000 receipts, lottery tickets, junk mail he must save, etc) isn't all over the counters)

monitors
napkin holder
food scale
toaster
bread bowl
various lotions
Daphne's hair bow basket

Oh my, ours is a mess. Let's see...on one side is my laptop and usually a stack of papers and stuff that I intend to get to, that usually includes my camera. On the other side of the stove is a bottle of EVOO, knife block, Keurig (and usually a few used K-cups). On the other side is a pile of papers usually, the Foodsaver, box of tissues, spice rack, dish rack, then dirty dishes, hand soap, napkins and often lysol wipes. We also have an elevated "bar" type area that all the random crap from the week ends up on. Currently, that includes a bowl of goldfish (the snack kind!), a folder of MOMS Club stuff, two remotes for Pax's toys + said toys, random stuff leftover from Tia's bday party including a bowl of stale crackers/dipping bread, my immersion blender, an empty tupperware container, plastic utensils, a clean wine glass, a bottle of beer and two empty wine bottles. ROFL We also have a fish tank on the end of that counter.

and maybe i'd lose a little weight too becaue there is no way that you can actually COOK in a kitchen like that

how do people keep their counters that clear.....they must be anorexic or something....oh and i'm sure there are no kids living in that house!!!

how clean were carol brady's counters......although she did have alice there to clean for her when she wasn't screwing the butcher!!!!

Um, yeah. I just spent the past HOUR cleaning in the kitchen and aside from having all the dishes clean, you'd never know. lol My laptop is on the counter on one side and it has many friends... coffee maker, kitchen aid, fruit shelf/bowl/spilling out everywhere, three monitors, a spice rack which is also surrounded by many bottles of vitamins along with a few spices that don't fit on the rack... and that's just this part of the kitchen! hahaha

But I'm going to bed now.... that probably has a little something to do with the reason my counters are a mess! lol I'm totally unwilling to stay up all hours of the night cleaning.

P.S. Peg, your counters look pretty similar to mine. I think it's just LIFE.

P.P.S. Even if those apples are fake, how boring to have a fruit bowl with only apples in it?! And that kitchen is beautiful but it's even a bit cluttered for my taste. Maybe after living with all this clutter for so long, I'm ready for naked counters. lol

This is how my kitchen looked before kids -- wish it was bigger so I could enjoy seeing it like that again!:

This is how it looks now:

J/k - here it was one day in July...the dishes are not washed/put away...but they usually aren't Smile :

SERIOUSLY, that pic is exactly how my countertops looked before babies. It is a disease, and an uptight butt pucker personality comes with it. You really DON'T want to be like that. REALLY!!!!

are you saying that candace has OCD like you do.....I do not picture candac'e butt puckering!!!!! I think you are just jealous of her purely clean white kitchen Smile

Nope, what I'm really jealous of is Candace's ability to have a white kitchen like that without the buttpucker factor! ROFL

LOL This thread is pretty funny.

I have a large kitchen with very little counter space.

What is on my counters right after I clean them, from left to right:
microwave
dish strainer
sink with dish soap and bottle brush and a wash cloth
bananas
coffee maker
butcher block/knives

But there is usually DH's phone charging and my purse sitting next to the microwave, plus that's where DH puts things down when he gets home so there's usually quite a collection of crap right there, a bunch of dirty dishes next to and in the sink, and maybe a box of cereal, goldfish or something like that by the bananas. Quite often I end up with crap on the stove too, toys that need to be fixed or something like that. Then I have an island pushed up next to the stove that should only have my recipe box and a box of tissues on it but is usually cluttered with papers (mail, school work, pictures the kids colored, etc.) and usually some toys too. Oh, and right now it has Logan and Joey's valentine boxes from school on it also.

My piles of crap are just everywhere else. The kitchen is the main entrance to my house and when people pop in it is the FIRST thing they see!

This thread is awesome.

Here's my list:

dirrrty dishes
dish rack with clean dishes
spice rack
4 canisters of baking stuff
phone
coffee grinder
french press
paper towel holder
kettle
coffee maker
microwave
toaster
bread

It doesn't look like much written out (to me) but we have VERY little counter space. I wish we had an island. Though it would just wind up cluttered I guess.

On my itty bitty counter to the left of the stove is where I keep my wine bottles....

then from the stove on the right of the counter

The microwave (which should be hanging on top of the stove), a bread cabinet, toaster, blender, dish rack, soap, dirty dishes, DH's coffee maker, a bowl full of stuff, empty water bottles to fill, and then a whole bunch of crap: receipts, Wyatts school work from yesterday, the mail stack........

I prob dont have a clean spot right now. It was great this weekend when my mom came because I had it cleaned...then helped DH Monday, did a little yesterday, and feel like crap today........

but I keep my george foreman, breadmaker, elec skillet, crock, etc etc under the cabinets.

I made a daily goal of trying to keep my kitchen clean and I havent done it every day........

I was like Mel pre-kids, but now we have a little more "lived in" look going. On the counters are a spoon rest, food processor, coffee pot, toaster, paper towel holder banana holder full of bananas and a drying mat next to the sink. On the small crap collecting counter next to my fridge is a basket to collect papers, mail, coloring books, trains, crayons, bubbles, etc. Next to that is a bowl with cell phones, keys and all that stuff and usually my bag on the counter next to all of it. Also, the breakfast bar currently has on it a candle, a cookie sheet with magnetic letters on it, a fish tank, dryer balls I took from William before nap time and a stack of library books that need to be returned. So my food prep counters I am still anal about, but the rest of it gets cluttered.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that battles kitchen counter clutter. I really wish we had a mudroom where we could just dump some of the clutter. But alas, I don't think mudrooms were standard in the 1960's. I do try to keep the bar counter area clean and free of clutter. here's what's standard on our counter tops:

tray that holds my kindle, phone when charging, important papers (a catch all)
a pile of papers that I don't really know what to do with...I sort through them every few weeks and dwindle it down before adding to it
2 cannisters, one for sugar, one for flour
block of knives
basket with dish towels
paper towel holder
crock pot
toaster
several 2 liters of pop
water bottle I take with me to the Y (doesn't fit in any cabinets)
Longaberger basket with utensils
And the best (not) part...a dish towel or paper towel with med syringes and feeding tube supplies

Oh yeah, and a small glass for the cat to drink from. Totally disgusting. I hate that she gets on the counters. But she refuses to drink from a dish or from the floor. I've tried to put it in the laundry room on the dryer (where her food dish is) but DH keeps moving it back. Ugh!!! So gross!!
