Dentist?

so at the 12 month appt the doc mentioned getting jade into a dentist to start check ups. my dentist wont do it unless they are three or theres a problem, so i thought nothing of it. then i'm looking at all my toddler pamphlets from different sources and they ALL day 6 months after the first tooth erupts or 12 months. so i started checking out dentists and there is such a thing as a pediatric dentist that has to do like 2-3 years extra schooling and they specialize in the infant and toddler dental care! who knew! lol! anyway jade has an appt on friday for her first 'meet and great' check up if things go well. and the best part is they are only two blocks from my dad so she gets to visit with granddad after!

any one else looking or looked into dentist yet?

Ooh, good luck! You'll have to let us know how it goes!!

I had to up my dental insurance to cover Maia and it only just kicked into effect. I plan for her and I to both go in October. I haven't been since the month before I got pregnant.

Sam goes in on Tuesday, our three year old has a cleaning so he will go with. WE use a pediatric dentist, they just seem so much better with the kids. something happened during the third trimster of my pregnancy with dd and her molars grew in without a protective barrier on them. this last spring right when she turned three she got sedated and they put four cap on andsome other stuff so that they would not have to do all thiswork in the future, she should be good until her permanant teeth come in. and they dont think that her adult teeth to have the same problem. so needless to say we will be bringing both our kids in on a regular basis

Alison went to the dentist last week! She was not a big fan! But I really want her to get used to the dentist since it cleanings are going to be a regular part of her life. I am kind of a freak about dental health. Smile

I wanted to take Austin back in June because he already has all of his teeth. Unfortunately his dad (sperm donor) is dragging his feet and hasn't added him to his dental insurance. So it looks like he wont be going until January.

Kristi that's great, any tips!! did you do any prep?
found this website http://grizzlybirds.blogspot.com/2008/06/toddlers-dentists-and-youtube.html with some links at the bottom for videos so we started playing dentist, counting teeth and laying back in her fuzzy chair. so far she's having fun and loved the videos of other kids getting their check up. i have great coverage with my disability so regular check ups and cleaning will be happening, i have such bad teeth i dont want her to go through it too.

Alison is great about letting me brush her teeth, so the cleaning and whatnot was not the issue. What she mainly didn't like was that there were strangers putting their hands in her mouth! She is going through major stranger danger right now and was not pleased to have anyone coming near her that 1. she didn't know and 2. that had some sort of weird sounding tool in their hand! But all in all she did alright. The dentist office we went to is strictly for pediatrics so it was a fun and colorful place. The hygenist was awesome and was really patient and kind.

We will take Jordan as soon as we can get her added to our dental insurance. That will be later this year sometime. Her Pedi encouraged us to take her in the next couple of months so we will do our best to get her in sooner rather than later. I went to a Pediatric Dentist when I was young and they were great. My dentist won't even see kids until they are quite a bit older.

I haven't given it much thought yet. They both get their teeth varnished at well-child visits and HATE it.

I do like the idea of playing dentist to get them used to the thought. I need to find a new dentist for myself & DH, may as well be one that will take the children too.

We took C to our family dentist office around 2.5 years. I went for my appt and she watched them, then she got her teeth cleaned. She did great and has now gone 5 or 6 times. We will take G around 2.5 years as well and we will all go together.

My FIL is a dentist, and he said that he's not worried until they're 3-4 as long as you're brushing well at home. I guess he means until they're old enough to cooperate with the cleaning (without being forcefully held down). Drew (4) goes for his first cleaning next week. In the past we've gone to Papa's office and just practiced, let people look in his mouth and "count" his teeth, etc. I don't plan on taking Katie for a while yet. (although she has BEEN to the dentist, but just to visit!)

well the appt has been postponed till nov 8. the dentist office i was looking at does NOT have a ped dentist on staff. but i found a great one that is ONLY ped dentists so the whole office is designed for the 0-3 range! she said feel free to drop in anytime to play with the toys and get used to the ppl and toys and noises! love it! meanwhile we continue to play dentist and keep those pearly whites clean!

I love our pediatric dentist office. It is so fun and colorful. I am so glad that I decided to go with a pediatric dentist instead of just taking her to our dentist office. Yes, they deal with kids but the environment is not as inviting.

thanks for the confidence kristi! was beginning to think i was crazy from all the weird looks and 'wth' comments for doing this so early. um read the parents pamphlets around here and we're actually late! lol! i can't wait to have enough courage to bus over there for a visit (three buses and 75 min) just to see if it's as happy as the phone call sounded!

it's official we are up to 15 teeth!!! cut the first bottom canine last night! one more canine, four two year molars and by the time we have to go through this again she'll be old enough to actually tell us what's wrong!

Oh my goodness. Lots of teething for Jade. Alison just cut molars on top and boy was she cranky pants.

I am very glad that I started taking her early. Alison does not like strangers and I really wanted her to get used to the surroundings. Plus, I had horrible issues with a dentist as a kid and I do not want Alison to go through that.

WOOHOO!!!!! got in early today on a cancellation, WE BOTH LOVE THE DENTIST!!! she's young and very friendly, the office is fantastic with seperate sections for tv, books and toys. there's tv's on the ceiling in the rooms and they ask first if the parent wants it on or off! to check jades mouth at the doc we usually face her to us straddling the tummy and flip her backwards (when she didn't want to have her mouth looked at) and she can't help but smile big. the dentist actually has chairs and a lap pillow to do it this way! jade was such a good girl though she didn't need it! she sat in the big chair and leaned back with it and brushed her teeth and opened wide like such a big girl!! there was a small fuss at first but not even enough tears to spill over the eyelid!
doc agreed that there was a lot of early eruption (i dated each tooth on her chart from public health and brought it in!) and some crowding, the bottom two are already starting to turn inward. absolutely no sign of cavities starting (they often see small white starts) so she's really happy with what we are doing! she goes back in march. when she was done she got to pick a prize (such fond memories of the prize jar when i was a kid!!) it was a drawer of stuffies and she got to pick one (she picked the turtle!) because of the crowding we are starting her on a calcium phosphate toothpaste (think fluoride only not) at night only since we can't really floss at this point. it's called MI paste and is vanilla flavoured! just had to share. for practice we watched youtube videos, and played dentist and had her aunty and cousin wear a mask and practice with us!

Yay! Glad Jade had such a good experience! Annabelle has her first appt on thurs. The MI paste works great, I use it myself to help with all the decalcification issues I have.

Sounds like Jade did AWESOME!!! What a great appointment. I like the idea of the TVs in the ceiling. That's smart. And great job on keeping the sugar bugs away from her teeth. Awesome work Momma and Jade!!
