Little Update and Questions

Nathan had his 1 year well check-up over a week ago now. He is now 20 pounds 10 ounces and 28.5 inches. I think it's quite crazy that he was 18 pounds 4 ounces at his 4 month well check-up. So that means he only gained 2.5 pounds in 8 months. His pedi says it is pretty normal though. He is right on track and pretty average size now. No longer 95th percentile for weight! lol I worried about this for the first several months even though everyone told me he would thin out. I still think he is absolutely perfect though. He has been a tough one though, with all the medical issues. The rash on his face had gone away, but is now back with a vengance and it looks absolutely terrible. Sad He got a big boy haircut the other day and I think it looks so much better. Smile Anyways, he goes to the allergist next Friday and then the dermatologist (if the allergist recommends) the following Monday so hopefully we can get some sort of answers.

Question 1-
Any other LO's still shoving so much food into their mouth that they choke? Sometimes he will continue eating. You would think he would have learned by now. He chokes on a daily basis. I have even tried only giving him a few little pieces but he still shoves them all in his mouth. If he has a mouth full and tries putting more in and you tell him now, he gets the most pathetic look on his face and just starts bawling. It is kinda amusing actually.

Question 2-
I call Nathan my little doggy. He ALWAYS has something in his mouth. He will crawl around with a toy in his mouth for an hour without dropping it. I want to get rid of the pacifier but at the same time I don't want all the toys in his mouth. Any suggestions?

too bad the rash hasn't cleared up.. hope the allergist and/or dermatologist will be able to get to the bottom of the mystery!

haircut? wow! At the rate J's hair is growing, we might be able to squeeze in a first haircut by the time he's about 2 I think! Wink

no advice on food - J doesn't DO 'people food' and will only eat purees... sigh...

J also wanders about with toys/empty yogurt pots/whatever he finds hanging out of his mouth these days. And he never did take a pacifier so this is a totally new behaviour for him - again... no advice really...

I'm not much help am i? Wink

Handsome baby! Love the haircut! Oh, I'm so sad his rash is back. Sad I had hoped it had cleared up for good. I hope the dermatologist will have answers this time! Good luck and keep us updated!

As for shoving food, Maia's not so bad about that, but she still chokes from time to time. Do you maybe just put a small amount on his tray and he shoves all of that? I was thinking maybe you could just put a small amount and then add more as he eats what's there?

Maia crawls around and walks with things in her mouth. It scares me that she could fall on it and break a tooth or something, but I can't seem to stop her, either. I guess they can't crawl with something in their hands so the mouth is the best carrying-case? LOL

Sorry about the rash! I hope they get that taken care of soon. He's adorable no matter what, though. JackJack is also big on crawling around with a toy in his mouth, just like a puppy dog. We encourage it. Wink

Poor guy - I hope you get the rash cleared up! Sigrid does the same thing - she shoves food in her mouth like she wont get anymore Smile and she always puts things in her mouth - her favorite thing is to get socks and walk around with them in her mouth.

Awww, that rash is just the saddest thing! I was so glad when you recently posted it had disappeared. That is really too bad that it's back. KUP on the doctors appointments.

Jordan's weight gain has slowed tremendously as well but her Pedi said it's perfectly normal. It sounds like he was ahead in weight for a while so it makes sense that he slowed down a little earlier than most.

Jordan stuffs her mouth full as well. I tend to cut things up pretty small so somehow she usually avoids chocking. I do have to limit the puffs I put on her tray though b/c she is the worst with those! She grabs all of them and shoves them all in her mouth as once. Then she will babble with her mouth full. She thinks it's funny when we tell her "no" too. Crazy kids.

Actually, Jordan crawls around with something in her hand (or hands) all the time! It's quite funny. Sometimes I don't think she cares what it is, she just likes to take something along with her. Sometimes it sounds funny too b/c she will have a plastic toy in her hand so it adds more of a sound effect as she crawls across a hard surface.

J does this too! Often a toy (blocks are a favourite) in each hand and one hanging out of his mouth. And if he moves onto the carpet or playmat he'll quickly go back to the tiles for the sound effect I think. It's a good way of keeping track of where he is! lol

Alison will only shove a bunch in her mouth if it is something she really, really loves like spinach. She gagged last night because she had so much in her mouth! I still cut all of her foods into tiny bites so she seems to do ok.

As far as things in her mouth....although, she is always crawling around the house with a toy or a wash cloth in her mouth! She threw her binky away at like 4 months so she always has something else in her mouth. Once a week I take all the toys she is more prone to carry around and give them all a good scrubbing with bleach water.

Glad to hear Nathan is doing well Smile

Jack still shoves way too much food in his mouth, always has. What I did was only put enough on his tray for one mouth full at a time. He would shove so much food in that he'd gag then puke. Now that he's older, I don't limit what's on his plate but we still have issues with him over stuffing his mouth. No clue on how to stop it. I do know that he's more likely to do it with some foods than others. Like strawberries, they have to be sliced or he'll shove the whole thing in his mouth  and he'll be 3 in 2mths

I hope that rash clears up soon, hopefully the drs will have some answers this time. Annabelle doesn't shove too much in her mouth at any one time, although there are some foods, her favorites, that she won't stop eating until she's overfilled her stomach and it all comes back up. She also doesnt really crawl with things in her mouth, she more pushes them forward with her knees to keep them with her.

looking forward to the update from the specialists, that poor rash has to clear up eventually. glad to hear he's on track!

jade did the too much food for a while and has since learned. then again she started early on foods, so they do eventually get the hint! i started giving her bigger pieces when she did this, sounds odd but it worked (great grandma suggestion!). i remember her chocking on the weirdest foods, like yogurt and soft stuff that you wouldn't think would choke them!

TOTALLY loves to walk around with stuff in her mouth, her favourites of course scare the heck out of me, ie toothbrush, metal end of soother clip (teething chewy at the other end  ), socks are a good one i have pics of! and of course she has recently discovered that she can put stuff in other ppls mouths... daddy's mouth holds TWO plastic golf balls!
these kids are too funny sometimes!
