is your lo pointing?

I took sam to his one year checkup today... 31 1/2 inches 23lbs

so she asked if he is pointing yet. I dont think that he is, not that I noticed. she said soon he should be. she also said that if they start pointing around this age that it decreases the odds that they will be autistic. so now of course I am going crazy wondering if he is going to point. I am not that concerned, though am always concerned as I know many children with autism and it is so prevalant in boys.

so just wondering if anyones lo's are pointing yet

Like, pointing at people? She will sort of point towards a toy or a bottle sometimes. And the cats. She points at them because she loves them and wants them so badly. LOL I haven't really seen her point at a person. But you know, I'm wondering if it's an actual point. Because it's kind of with most of her hand...

So maybe that's actually more a reach. hm.

ETA: Definitely pointing. Today I watched closely and that little finger was pointing out everything. LOL

Jordan is sort of obsessed with pointing right now. I'd never heard about the connection to autism though. Why did the Pedi even say that to you?! Doesn't she know that any parent would then obsess over it? I'm sure he is fine but I hope he starts pointing soon so you can forget about what she said.

It's funny you should mention. Spark just started pointing like, 2 days ago. I love that little finger. It's so cute! I don't think she knows why she's pointing, just that she saw something and wants to point at it LOL

Don't worry too much about what the doctor said (about autism) it's so hard to tell yet. Just enjoy your baby! :vibes:

Kylee points at everything and its actually really funny! We will be walking into a store and she just starts randomly pointing at things, and she makes this really weird noise when she does it. shes a weird kid. I've never heard of it having to do with autism either.

Alison points at everything and has been for awhile. I have never heard of the connection between pointing and autism. I am sure he is just fine!

Katie occasionally points, mostly if we are looking at a book she will point to pictures. This is a new thing she has done lately though. I agree your doc should have left that last fact out  I'm sure your little one is absolutely perfect.

no pointing here - what a dumb thing for your pedi to say though... like moms need any more reason to worry if baby is 'normal' enough or not...

I think she meant just pointing finger or hand at familiar things people, things they want etc. I cant believe she said it either b/c now I wonder. I am trying not to worrry sam is very affectionate, alert etc and I think its too early for something like that anyways. today was the first day he gave a real wave goodbye, he usually just opens and closes his hand but today it was full on waving the arm when we were saying goodbye to friends at the zoo...so cute, I just love this age

No pointing here either.... Rachel used to tap her index finger on a book/table because I would do it while reading to her, but she stopped. I wouldn't worry at all just yet. Maybe if you started pointing at things he will copy? We don't do a lot of pointing in the house, lol, so that could be it. Pointing is rude!! Blum 3 (on adults)

:lurk:

Hi, I was just lurking and I can't believe your doctor said that. I think they sometimes forget about how easy it is to hook onto little things they say when they're just making what seems like a passing comment to them. My sister researches and diagnoses autism and she and I have talked about the pointing thing before. I just want to let you know that it is NOWHERE near this age. I don't really know too much about how they diagnose but I think the pointing thing is just like one of a multitude of things and it's more of an annecdotal sign, not like a a make-or-break diagnosis thing. I'm not entirely sure though, I'm not an expert but that's what I gather. She did give me an age at which it would be a little strange if they weren't pointing but that is so so so so so far from 12 months. I can't even believe your ped would say that to you now. Anyway I hope it's ok I butted in like this, but I just want to give a little reassurance.

thanks flychick, that does put my mind at ease. and wouldnt you know it today he was pointing at stuff. we have been cooped up in our house all winter and now are getting out more and more and now I think her is really noticing new things and was pointing. There is always something to worry about.....ah the joys of being a parent.

Lol, he's super smart, he's just keeping you on your toes. DD seems to be the same. Even though she's younger by a little, it was like when we started spending more time outside it's when she started finding things to point at for the first time. Now she points at literally everything she sees but it definitely started when the weather got better and we were outside more.

some docs forget or just plain don't know what it's like to be a parent of such a small bundle of energy! glad you're breathing easier, i try to take along SIL to things like that, she calms me before i get thinking about stuff, otherwise it's way to easy sometimes!
jade's another major pointer, from early she pointed at daddy all the time, we joked that she had him wrapped around that finger!!!
