Desmond's 4 month check up

We had Desmond's 4 month yesterday. He is 12.36lbs and 23.19 inches long. He is 9% for weight and 7% for height. At 2 months he was 10.5 lbs and 21.7 inches. The dr didn't like how little he was and said I need to start supplementing with formula. Sad He eats all the time and I'm producing milk. He's a very happy and strong baby so it makes me sad I was told that.

However I asked some ladies on a FB page for around here and they said if you go by a BFing chart the percentiles are completely different and that he is actually average for his size and age. They said that they base that off of formula fed babies and that I don't have to supplement if I didn't want to because he is still growing and I shouldn't worry about it (one of them was a Douala and I think LLC too). So that made me feel better.

I knew he was a lot smaller than my girls because he is still in size 1 diapers and 2s look huge on him lol. Although I did upgrade him to 1-2s for night Smile But that's only because I have about 800 of those LOL! But he is a little baby. Heck he still fits in nb size onesies! Although I did go through his drawers and put his 0-3 months away for he can wear his 3-6s.

He has a follow up appt next month to see how he's gaining. I really like my dr a lot. He's very nice and listens to you. I think maybe he just had a bad morning (he was running at least 45 minutes behind) because he kept telling me it's not that my BM wasn't enough but that they like to see babies gain more weight.

So that's my update Smile

Your friends are right. There are 2 different charts for formula fed and breast fed babies. My pediatrician says that as long as they are growing she doesn't worry about it when they are breast fed. If there was no growth you should be concerned, but he seems healthy and as long as he's hitting his milestones he's fine. You do not need to supplement with formula just to fatten him up. He's petite, that's all. My son is on the opposite side of the spectrum. He's also exclusively breastfed and at his 2 month he weighed 16lb 8oz and was 24 3/4 inches long. I'm eager to see how his 4 month goes when we go for that on the 10th.

Enjoy your tiny baby. They grow up so fast and you still have an itty bitty one so just enjoy the time you have. Kole is already so big that I feel like I didn't even get to have enough itty bitty time with him. Does Desmond roll over? Kole hasn't yet.

two different charts yes you could look it up see where he lies for yourself.
Not sure what the expected growth is over 2mths but maybe look up the chart see where he was at 2mths and where he is now and then go from there.

what a ham Smile

Yeah I looked it up and at 2 months I think he was slightly above average and then at 4 months he's average.

But he has rolled over and even has been trying to roll from back to front. He's been trying to scoot this week to get his toys and he has pretty good balance sitting up. And he's a drool monster lol. I'm just glad I have a lot of people agreeing that I don't have to supplement if I don't want. I've never had chubby babes either. Even when my girls were on formula they were always pretty small (although not that small Smile )

He looks perfectly healthy to me- super cute little thigh rolls and chubby cheeks! As long as he has a healthy appetite and doesn't start to look super skinny, it wouldn't be bothering me either. "Normal" body type for babies varies just as much as it does for adults, and doctors freak out too much sometimes. It's ridiculous.

It sounds like he's doing just fine. His pictures are adorable and he's got some chubbs!

DD1 was a true failure-to-thrive situation. She gained only a pound in the first three months, and her percentiles plunged from 50th to zeroth. As long as his percentiles are staying somewhat consistent, you have nothing to worry about.

When I was a baby (I was also FF) I was on the charts and then just fell off of them. The drs told my mom they weren't worry though because I was still growing, just not along their charts. I'm fine today, just short (5'0 ha ha). He may just end up being a little kid Smile
