mw questions

I have my first mw appt next Tues. First appt is an hour :O then all others are half an hour.

Do you have ideas for what questions I should be asking? I'm still having LO in hospital. So far my thoughts for questions are
does pediatric team come in if there is meconium? (had with ds)
who is responsible for the two newborn tests (heel prick and hearing).....mw or hospital?

No idea. I don't do midwives. Hopefully someone can lend you more insight!

You can always ask about what your MW will allow during birth.
-Like can you be up and walking?
-Do you have to be on the monitor or do they have wireless?
-Are IV's required or can you just have a hemp-lock (sp?)?
-How does she feel about delivering LO in positions other than flat on your back?
-Is she ok with you eating and drinking? What do they have for you to use (ie. birth ball, birthing stool, tubs, ect.) and what can you bring with you?
-Will she be at the birth for sure or do you get whoever is on-call? Do they have a MW on-call at all times if she won't be there?
-Will she continue your care or transfer you to an OB if you go past 40 weeks?

I don't know if any of those help as I'm not sure what you are looking for with your birth but I know those are some of the things I've ask my MWs before and wish I would have asked my hospital MW during my first pregnancy.

Meconium - usually it greatly depends on the amount of meconium, since it's pretty normal to have a some, it only really becomes dangerous if there is a lot of meconium.

If you are having a hospital birth, the hospital will usually run whatever screening tests you want or you can opt to have them done by your pediatrician.

Also, since you're having baby in the hospital, the MW is usually a lot more "by the book" I'm assuming you are using a CNM instead of a LM and those are very different types of training and methodologies and hospitals have regulations so it's likely you will still have a pediatric team in there for baby anyways. There were pediatric teams in for both of my hospital born babies despite the fact that there were no complications or health problems.

Most of the time the MW will go over everything with you during the 1st appointment. My first appointment with my MW was 2 hours long during my first pregnancy. It was shorter during my second only because we were both already very familiar with each-others wants/needs and medical history. I am sure you will love your care, weather it's a CNM or a LM it's so much more personalized and woman centered than regular OB care. I agree, ask what the MW will allow during the birth and make sure that the hospital you choose also allows for the things that you absolutely want. (For example, the 1st hospital I went to would absolutely NOT allow me to get out of the bed for any reason, I had to go to the bathroom in a bed-pan and I was not allowed to come off the monitor EVER so just research the hospital policies for women in labor, some things will be out of your MW's hands) .

Oh, I just noticed you are in Canada -- I hear hospitals and medical staff there are a lot more sane than ours LOL

I don't believe we have more than one type of mw here. Thanks for the additional questions

I'm excited and nervous, we meet the mw tomorrow......all in all I had a pretty good labour with ds, I'm "hopeful" that with a mw it will be similar but my few negs will become positive
