Nursing

Hi ladies! I hope things are going well for everyone -- who can believe our babies are going on TWO months old?? (Not me.)

Will is doing great and getting very big, so I don't have a supply question -- and he has so many wet diapers that I am pretty sure he's getting enough to eat. But one thing I've noticed in the last few weeks is that he spends SO much less time nursing. A few weeks ago he was nursing about two hours a day total, now it is between 45 minutes and one hour. He will nurse for five minutes on one breast and be done. Does anyone else's baby do this?

He also occasionally fusses while nursing (and by fusses I mean "screams in my face") but I think that's because he swallows air and needs to burp. That's gotten much better.

Is this typical of anyone else's baby?

mine was just one month yesterday haha so far behind

They will get faster as they get it more figured out (except during growth spurts they can never get enough). Adam generally has always been fast but with his crazy weight gain I know he's got it all figured out so I never worried about it. He's done usually in 5min these days

Speeding is normal, they get much better at nursing and can get enough much quicker. So no need to worry as long as he seems satisfied, is still gaining weight and having wet diapers. Enjoy the extra time you have.

Yes! Desmond only spends an average of about 7 minutes on one side. (BTW because of this he only nurses on the one side or else I would leak all over and have to change my shirt since my right side produces so much more resulting in one giant boob LOL)

But he is gaining weight great. I was fearing off and on about him only being there for a short time but the drs said he's growing great so I'm not worried.

Well I definitely don't have to answer your first question! Smile But yes Cammi has been a lot faster eating and its because she's not constantly unlatching to play, she's just getting straight to the point. Lol. As for the screaming fits Will has while eating, Cammi use to do it a lot too, just getting too much milk and not swallowing it, she's gotten a lot better and has learned to swallow if she starts screaming.

gah I'm so tired. Yes Desmond will do that sometimes with the screaming fits. I think it's because he has a burp but doesn't wanna give up the yummy goodness of the boob juice lol. Eventually I just have to pull him away and try and burp him and usually he will spit up some (or a lot ew) and then he's all better. Smile

Yes! Both of mine have nursed like this. I have oversupply issues and a really forceful letdown and I think (as does my pediatrician) that it contributes to the fussing and needing to be burped more. But because I produce SOO much milk, my little man is doing great with that nursing habit, so I don't worry about it.

LOVE your siggy pic btw! So CUTE!

Yes, they do get faster at eating as they get more experience so I wouldn't worry if he is gaining and wetting still.

My DS2 nursed for long periods until he was like 6 months. Archer is already much faster and can be done in less than 10 min. sometimes.

Thanks everyone! I didn't think it was a problem but didn't know now common it was. I'm glad to know it's totally normal! Definitely not complaining over here. I love having an efficient eater! Smile
