Question about using the women's restroom with DS.

DS is only 4 so I am not too worried about him coming in with me to use the women's washroom yet, but I know in a few years he will be too old to come in with us. But when do you think it is appropriate to send him into the men's washroom by himself while I take the girls to the women's. I do not like the idea of him having to wait outside by himself while we take longer.

Maybe when he starts school? Although that is tricky. I mean I think women are more open to little boys coming into the bathroom than little girls going into the men's. But I know what you mean about not wanting him to wait by himself too long.

:lurk:

I still bring my 7 year old with me to the women's, though we've started letting him go by himself to the men's if it is a place we trust.

I think boys can go to the women's restroom a lot longer than girls can go to the men's restroom (because of the urinals). In a women's restroom, you rarely see anything, everything happens in the stalls.

We are in Niagara, about 15-20 mins outside of Niagara Falls.

I just try to find family washrooms to use when I can.

I'd say 8ish. DS is 4, and on the rare occasion we are out and daddy isn't with us, I either take him into the women's with me or we find a family restroom.

They need to make more family ones.

I agree, I use them when we can but they often do not have them.

Yes, this. DS1 will be 7 soon & he still goes with me in busy places. We let him go alone in single room bathrooms that we check that no one is in. I would much rather deal with upset 'ladies' than have anything inappropriate happen to him in the men's room when I couldn't be around. I think we will evaluate each year as it comes but I don't know the exact age when I will feel that he could protect himself in the men's room alone if needed.

Now that I'm just starting out with a boy, I can't imagine ever letting him go into a public restroom by himself! I'm pretty sure I'll be the same as Joy... I don't care whether or not someone considers be over-anxious. There are too many sickos out there, and I won't allow the opportunity for my babies to become a statistic... at least that's my thought-process. Maybe I'm more cautious because of my elementary music teacher who was arrested for molestation, or any number of other cases that were too close for comfort.

Amanda - I feel the same way. There are way too many sickos out there and I don't care if someone says I'm paranoid. I was talking to a lady around here that I bought something from and she was saying that where he daughter is set to go to kindergarten next year, the apartments right across the street is FULL of sex offenders. She said she has an app on her phone that updates her. I knew the apartments near my daughter's bus stop had some, but then again I would never let her be there alone. One of the moms and I have an agreement and if for some reason either of us are running late, we will wait with the other's daughter until she gets there.
Lol sorry that was all off topic!

But IMO you can never be too careful when it comes to your kids.
