    Default Thrush

We have thrush!! I have had it with all 3 of our kids. I had to go on antibiotics last week for a UTI and that usually is what sets it off. So we are working on fighting it. Boiling soothers, using Nystatin, Hopefully we can avoid the Genitian Violet but I will try to find some at a pharmacy this weekend. It is just such a pain in the butt.

That really sucks! I'm on the lookout for it here all the time since you have to have antibiotics with a c/s. I hope you can get past it quickly.

No fun. I had it numerous times with Ds2. Taking a probiotic kept it from finally coming back again. Hope your goes away quickly.

oh no I know your pain all too well. I had EVERYTHING when bfing the first time. I went the GV way but I was home alone with baby most of the day so I could just hid out, wear next to nothing and not worry about the mess. This time with ds plus MIL/BIL living with us I wouldn't be able to do that so it would certainly make things difficult.

fingers crossed that you get rid of it asap

Oh when I had mastitis I was on ab's and since I'd already had thrush twice and really didn't want it again I actually had to set up a schedule for myself (if I remember correctly it was my second dose of ab's for returning mastitis so the dose/timing was crazy). My schedule was antibiotic at "x" time then probiotic at "y" time and was laid out perfectly thoughtout the day to make sure I got all my ab's in and then the probiotics timed correctly in between (if I remember correctly you need to take probiotics something like at least 2hrs after and at least 1hr before or something like that)

Started probiotics and Genetian Violet today, hopefully that takes care of it but I might have to go make on antibiotics so hopefully the probiotics work to keep it away.

I just set out to post about thrush too!

I haven't had it with either of my other kids, but noticed my nipples burning this afternoon and realized I probably have thrush. Maddie has had some yeasty diaper rash, and I *just* got a new nursing bra from Target. It's one of those lined bras, which I really liked, but I bet it keeps my nipples too moist, especially if I leak during the day.

I have some nystatin from Maddie's diaper rash--can i put that on my nipples too? I am washing everything with vinegar on hot, and plan on boiling the pacifiers/bottles/breastpump parts. I guess I am going to get a probiotic, but hoping to avoid gentian violet. I have my pp checkup this Thursday, so maybe they can help me if I am still thrush-y.

    Any other practical advice?

You can use nystatin ointment or cream on your nipples. Comes in a tube. If you see white patches in her mouth, You can also dilute vinegar in water (not sure of the concentration ) and use a q-tip to apply it to these in between feedings. Use breast pads and change them often. Let you nipples air dry. Dry you bras in the sun becuase it kills yeast. Keep doing all of this for 2 wks. Your dr can prescribe Nystatin for the baby, it is an oral medication. They say give it to them 2 times a day, but it is best to use a q-tip, dip it in the medication and apply directly to the white patched in the mouth. Do this often, becuase the yeast gros back in 3 hrs, so you need to do this more often then that. Also, it does not work after swallowing, the power is in the surface contact within the mouth. So you baby will in take less medication but it is more effective.

Ultimately, I have found GV is the only thing that really works for me and this is my 3rd child and 3rd time dealing with it. I hope things get better soon.

Sorry to hear about the thrush! I'm grateful that I've never gotten it. My nursing issue is painful, but not as involved as treating thrush. Hope it clears up fast, and you have no side effects from treatment!
