2 week appt.. (XP)

So today Bram had his 2 week follow up appointment - he's only gained 4 oz in the past week. Dr isn't happy and wants him back on Friday for another weight check and wants to see him up at least 3-4 oz. Um.. in 2 days?? :dontknow: Is that possible??

I did get a chance to work with one of the office lactation specialists for over an hour and I think she gave me some really good tips on getting my milk to come down more. Basically right now Mr. B is exerting too many calories getting the milk to come down and by the time "let down" occurs, he's too tired to eat. She sent me home with a starter "nutrition kit" from Enfamil but she said we could use the BM I have stored in the freezer if we wanted to.

It's killing me to not do 100% breast but he just isn't strong enough right now. She said once he's back up to birth weight, she thinks he may be able to go 100% breast without syringe supplement. Poor little dude. Sad

His billy count was down to 9.something - VERY happy with that! :clappy:

The crap part of my day was when I had to go into the work office to have some insurance papers sent off and my boss said "Let's see the little rat. "

My son is NOT a rat. I hate that man.. I really, really don't like him. Sad

Ack! Your boss pisses me off as much as mine does. That is so rude, I don't care if he was trying to be funny.

Sorry about the feeding issues. Hope he starts to gain fast and you can do 100% breastmilk soon!

4oz in a week isn't terrible. How far from his birth weight is he? At least he is gaining something - you're doing something right!!

Awww, I'm sorry. I'm also curious as to how off he was. Hopefully, he gets there soon so you can go back to just breast.

Let's see -

4/10 (Wed - Birth day) he was 6.12
4/16 (Tuesday - Home appt) he was 6.02
4/17 (Wednesday - Pedi office) he was 6.02
4/24 (Today) - he was 6.06

They want him back to 6.12 by this Friday, 4/26.

They weighed him after I fed him 10 min on each side and was 6.08 so he got 2oz of BM which the LC said was pretty good!

I'm supposed to feed him then pump 1 hour after he's done and then feed him one hour after I'm done pumping - and do that repetitively through the day and let him go 3-4 hours at night.

Tonight I fed him about 10 min on each side and pumped but he wanted back on the breast about 20 minutes after I pumped so I let him but he ended up eating all 2 oz I had just pumped as him supplement, post breast.

I've just re-read all I wrote and maybe I'm tired but it's sounding all jumbled lol.. I *know* what I mean to say.. hope it's coming out right. Lol Yup, I have a newborn, alright! :biglaugh:

It made sense! Smile

Did the LC recommend doing breast compressions while you feed him?

That term doesn't sound familiar.. What's a breast compression?

I know my situation is different because I formula feed but wanted to comment on the scheduling thing. DD was scheduled very early.. Pretty much before leaving the hospital and we quickly could up her intake and cut out a bottle. Well Rylee was off a bit and wanted to eat a lot so we upped her amount and tried to get her on a schedule good for us and it has backfired. As much as I want her to be scheduled clearly that doesn't work for her.

I'm not an LC, so I'm not trying to give advice, but breast compressions are basically milking yourself while your baby is eating. Whilehhe's latched, you gently massage the milk out. It helps sometimes to keep them from pulling on and off.

No worries, mama. Biggrin They did mention this.. specifically for the hind milk ducts that aren't being worked out yet.. basically they said to use my thumb to push down towards the nipple.. I'm giving that a shot, too. Smile

Yes, the compressions are good and also I would try a hot pad...like just a wash cloth dipped in hot water and lay it on your breast as he eats after let down. I found it usually helps the milk flow better. In some ways it's nice to miss out on the end of pregnancy but after having 2 early babies I can vouch for it not being the easiest road. They are usually not as awake or efficient feeders until they get a little older...I've felt this has been a symptom of being a bit early. Hope it improves soon and you can stop having to worry about supplementing. :bighug:

I had to really work at getting dd her milk supply. I would put warm washcloths on my breasts for 15 min b4 feeding her 10 minutes a side, then giving her 1 oz breast milk by bottle then pumping 30 minutes (10 min a side with a hand pump till my pump came in). I did this abt a month until my let down was good enough for her. Then I also messaged the milk out to help her during her nursing. In the end it really helped because I would still have to pump 4 times a day besides exclusively Brest feeding her till 7 months. I was a good cow I guess. Hope this helps maybe...

Wow 2oz from 20 min of nursing is great! Pretty sure my kid can only get 1oz out of me at that rate. He's not an efficient nurser at all.
