So I got my blood results back. I'm anemic. She wants me to try to fix it with my diet first and then re-test me next time. If the results are the same she wants me to take an iron supplement.
I'm not really surprised. I eat lots of eggs, dark leafy greens, beans, and raisins. But I've almost entirely cut beef out of my diet. Mainly because I love cows. But I do like beef too, I just feel guilty. So I will try to get over it and eat some more red meat in combo with Orange Juice...because I guess it helps with absorption. I also recently started taking those gummy prentatals which do not have iron, because I thought the iron was making me sick. Back to the regular 'ol prenatals.
Also I'm losing weight quite rapidly...I hate it. I know I mentioned it before, but I'm eating constantly...my boss made a comment about the amount of food I brought in today. I'm hoping its a phase and the baby is just stealing my calories. I weighed about 113 before I got pregnant (I'm 5' tall and small boned). Now I weigh 107. How is that even possible? My MIL said I looked skinny. Makes me nervous. Anyone else have a weight loss problem?
I have lost about 10lbs, but I am very overweight and my doc is not concerned. Is your doc worried about your weight? I would think if you are eating healthy and getting enough protein then you should be fine. Growing a baby takes a lot of calories!
As for the iron, I would not add back in beef do turkey/chicken instead. You can get a good source of iron from the other foods you listed.
Yeah she said seemed a bit concerned about me losing weight...she'd like me to gain 3lbs before my next visit. I do eat mostly turkey/chicken/fish for my proteins...but I don't know why its not helping. Maybe its just the pregnancy. Baby is stealing all my calories and iron!!
Sounds like you're already eating lots of protein. It's hard enough finding stuff that sounds/tastes good when pregnant without having to add extra stuff you don't feel like eating. It seems crazy that you're eating well and losing weight! I hope you can figure all this stuff out!
Ive lost 16 lbs since the beginning of pregnancy. Probably because of m/s. My doc isnt concerned because I'm already overweight...but.. she did say I'm not eating enough protein. Everyone Ive talked to said theyve lost weight in the beginning because of m/s but once it's gone, they gain it right back and have a healthy bean!
I am a vegetarian and I had a hard time with keeping my iron up during my last pregnancy. I started eating a lot of dark leafy greens (kale and chard are good, especially in smoothies or green juice), blackstrap molasses, beets (in juice or roasted), and apricots. Sundried tomatoes, hummus, and sesame seeds actually have a ton of iron, too. My midwife had me drink liquid chlorophyll as well (I hated that junk!).
The minty kind is not soooo awful if you dilute it with water. Sadly, I did not learn that there was a minty kind until AFTER my son was born. I drank the regular kind in Hawaiian Punch, because that crap is strong enough to cover anything. Hubby called it my obnoxious cocktail!
My midwife didn't mention the chlorophyll, but I hired a doula already and I keep her updated on my appointments and she did mention the chlorophyll to me. I might try it, but I'm nervous now that you say it tastes gross because I'm still dealing with morning sickness.
Thanks for the other suggestions. Yes I'm a huge salad eater (even more so since I've been preggers)...Kale and spinach are like a staple for me right now. The other stuff I will definitely give a go. I love hummus! I will eat a whole container, but it makes me gassy. Haha.
So, the last time I ate spinach was in early February. I really really wanted that and Spaghetti-o's. So, I dumped a can of spinach into a bowl of spaghetti-o's and ate it. It was SO delish! The next day I was in horrible horrible pain. Like I can't move pain. I cried and I knew I was pregnant already so I thought I was losing the baby (I had already been bleeding, but it ended up being ectopic so the spinach had nothing to do with it), but that pain has kept me from spinach since then. It was so so bad And it's not like I haven't eaten that amt of spinach before. During thanksgiving that's pretty much half my plate. Or Kale. Oh no! Now I want some! AHHH
