It's a boy!

The perinatologist was awesome. He told me right off that an amnio was not worth the risk in my situation and that he respected my decision to decline it. He said my HCG was low and the neck measurement at 12 weeks was high and this is an indicator for downs. We were unable to find any other markers and the little guy was measuring right on (and they measured everything--head, stomach, arms, legs, and more!). We will go back for another scan at 20weeks so they can get a better view of the facial structures, heart, and kidneys .

I am relieved that the other scary things seem to be ruled out. I would be sad if my child had downs, but it is not a death sentence.

I wanted to add:

DS asked the U/S tech where the toys were. lol He then turned to be and told me to eat some toys so the baby could play with them. You have got to love how 6 year old's think!

Congrats on your boy!! So exciting!! Glad you weren't pushed into the amnio! Sorry your numbers are showing an indicator for downs, but they also could mean absolutely nothing! I like your DS's comment, that is too funny! I can't wait to be a mom to share moments like that! I have a friend that teaches kindergarten and she's always posting on fb all their funny comments. I love that!

First of all Yahoo congrats on your boy! Is your DS excited to have a brother? Also, I am sorry to hear that the markers could be pointing towards Downs, but I also agree with Elizabeth that they could mean nothing at all. Will you know more at your 20 week scan?

Thanks Ladies!

I have my 20 week scan on Nov 15th. They will continue to look for markers then. They are also going to monitor my placental circulation which apparently my numbers indicate a potential problem.

As I said in another thread, my mantra is: this baby is healthy until they prove to me otherwise.

Oh yay!! Congrats on your lil boy!!! Smile Also, my drs told me repeatedly that my DD was going to have downs because of her measurements and apparently the shape of her forehead was too flat.. There were several indicators they found... I had actually went in for an amnio but the nurse asked me if it really mattered weather she had it or not and my reply was of course not. So she told me not to risk the procedure. We ended up leaving before the dr could do it. Three months later she was born perfectly healthy!! Drs are not always right, nor are the measurements.

That is such a great attitude Cristan!

Joy - My DH said the same thing. At one of my scans (maybe the NT scan? Or the 20 week scan, can't remember) they came back and said that DS's measurements of fluid around the brain was too high. That got me all kinds of scared, but DH said "Does it matter? Does it change anything you are going to do?" I said no, so we didn't do anything more with it, and now he is a perfectly happy, healthy, normal little boy. So yeah, those measurements can be stressful, but they don't always mean anything, and if they aren't going to cause you to change your course of action, it's kind of pointless to get too worked up about them.

there is a Bill Cosby skit where he talks about his wife swallowing a ball to give he baby something to play with. Your sons comment made me think of that. Sounds lke you have a great attitude and that baby is happy and healthy!
