    Default Newborn necessity or nah?

So I get different opinions on what clothes/items are a must have for the newborn stage. Now I know some people have big babies and skip the newborn size, but I'm expecting a smallish baby. Who knows I could be surprised though.

So here is what people tell me I must have...please weigh in or add your must haves:

    1) Legless gown for easy nighttime changes (I own 4)
    2) At least 10 newborn sized onesies (I only own 8 )
    3) Footies (I have 2 newborn sized ones)
    4) Hats (I have a gazillion)
    5) Newborn t-shirt or side snap tees (I have none, but people tell me they are good for cloth diapered newborns, but what do you put on their legs?)
    6) Swaddling blankets (I have a gazillion types, aden+anais/swaddleme/halos/receiving blankets)
    7) How many diapers? I have 120 newborn disposables and 15 newborn cloth diapers. Is that enough? Too much?

    1) Legless gown for easy nighttime changes (I own 4). I am liking these. I have 2 and I am using them over and over for sleep.
    2) At least 10 newborn sized onesies (I only own 8 ). I bought only one package of 6 and that has been enough for us.
    3) Footies (I have 2 newborn sized ones). I like these a lot since socks just don't stay on.
    4) Hats (I have a gazillion) I have one and we haven't used it too much, even in Alaska!
    5) Newborn t-shirt or side snap tees (I have none, but people tell me they are good for cloth diapered newborns, but what do you put on their legs?) Never used these other than the hospital. We cloth diapered Sam, and Tim's diapers are on the way.
    6) Swaddling blankets (I have a gazillion types, aden+anais/swaddleme/halos/receiving blankets) I have lots of swaddles and receiving blankets. There are a lot of uses for them!
    7) How many diapers? I have 120 newborn disposables and 15 newborn cloth diapers. Is that enough? Too much THat may seem like a lot of dipes, but we are going through 8 or so disposables a day now--more in the first few days. I definitely think you need more cloth!

My babies were both 8 lbs and used nb clothes for awhile.

List looks good to me! I didn't like the gowns as much just style wise bit I did make sure to have zippered pjs because they're just as easy.
If you get the snap white shirts you will be good on mb onesies. I like them because you don't have to pull anything over their heads which is harder when they can't hold their head up yet. If you're just using it as an undrshirt than you put a sleeper right over it or they can hang out in that and a dipe.
If by footies you mean pjs you should probably have more if those. They're better to have for during the day.
The a and a blankets are awesome. You can't really swaddle well with most other blankets. and the swaddlemes are a must too. Receiving blankets are pretty useless for swaddling. They're better just for laying on top of baby.
You have 15 prefokds or 15 pockets or what? if you do just cloth you'll need more but if you're mixing it up at first that should be enough.

sorry for typos - on the phone!

Yeah I know I don't need all those hats...I just got them as gifts. I probably have over 12 of them.

I thought I had more onesies, but actually I have a ton of 0-3 months and only a few newborn.

Oh I have a couple more newborn cloth dipes than I thought. My newborn cloth dipe stash consists of 4 bg AIO, 3 grovia AIO, 3 kissaluv fitted, 1 wahm fitted, 6 prefolds (maybe more coming from my friend), 5 diaper covers. All of these I just mentioned are newborn sized. I have a ton more for the 8-35lbs stage. A ton more. So not counting covers I have 17 newborn dipes. Don't tell me I need more, DH is going to freak if I buy anymore cloth.

I do plan on using sposies for the first couple of days for the meconium. After that I want to cloth diaper exclusively during the day and play it by ear at night.

a lot of 0-3 onesies fit for nb but you might want a few more or else the shirts.
and if you plan to CD exclusively get another dozen if pre folds. they are good up to 12 lbs or so

As far as diapers go, plan on going through probably 10-12 changes a day when baby is little. Are the "footies" footed pajamas? I ended up buying several of those in newborn size because my legless gowns were age 0-6months and DD was only 5lbs 11 oz so they were way too huge on her. Her diapers would either leak or else she would spit up on them frequently so I wanted several pairs to be able to change her without running a gazillion loads of laundry per day. I think your list sounds good, you will be better able to tell what you personally end up liking to use with your baby once he is here, plus you will then be able to see if he needs newborn size stuff or is pretty close to fitting into the 0-3 month stuff.

** so I know everyone always focuses on weight on outfits for kids etc but for me my kids don't grow out of things weight wise nearly as easy as they do length wise. There is an overlap in most newborn and 0-3 mos stuff but already right now I have the issue I always do. Newborn fits everywhere except Rylee is 22 in so the length does not. When I go up to 0-3 the clothes swim on her because only length is good. Same thing happened with DD and her carseat... People made huge deals of weight limits on the car seats but she grew out of it long before due to length

    1) Legless gown for easy nighttime changes (I own 4)
I don't use these at all. We had one or two with DD but I didn't find night changes a problem so didn't need an easy fix on that
    2) At least 10 newborn sized onesies (I only own 8 )
I only used these when it is hot out and even then I tended to prefer a lot of more one piece things to just a onside. I have a bazillion of them in all sizes and honestly never put her in just a onesie
    3) Footies (I have 2 newborn sized ones)
This is honestly what my kids live in when little. They wear them day and night pretty much for me.
    4) Hats (I have a gazillion)
I am not a hat person EXCEPT when they sleep at night. They cannot regulate their body temp and so heat loss through the head is huge.
    5) Newborn t-shirt or side snap tees (I have none, but people tell me they are good for cloth diapered newborns, but what do you put on their legs?)
I find these useless!!! I have a bunch someone gave me a couple packages and never use them.
    6) Swaddling blankets (I have a gazillion types, aden+anais/swaddleme/halos/receiving blankets)
Way way way too many of these in my opinion. This is the gift everyone gave me and I don't use. I have a few of the swaddle sacs and blankets but there is a blanket called the miracle blanket that we bought with DD and it was amazing! DDs has a whole in it so we just ordered a new one because my kids are squirmy and get out of blankets swaddle.
    7) How many diapers? I have 120 newborn disposables and 15 newborn cloth diapers. Is that enough? Too much?
I don't do cloth but 120 will get you through the merconium time. Rylee poops 2-3 times a feeding right now so we are going through a bunch of diapers

Everyone and every baby is different and it will really only take you a couple of days to get down what you like/dislike and what you use the most and not at all. Since my DS is 6 1/2 and I do kind of feel like we're starting all over again, we are going to start off doing things how we did with him and what really worked for us and will go from there. We have enough of everything to get us started. Remember if you end up with something you really like and find you don't have enough of it, send someone to the store for more.

    1) Legless gown for easy nighttime changes (I own 4)-I didn't have any of those for my DS, but did make sure his sleepers(for at night) were zippered for those zombie middle of the night feedings. lol

    2) At least 10 newborn sized onesies (I only own 8 )-We have one package of 5 0-3 month and two packages of 5 3-6 months plain white, which we will use for under his sleepers. We have more decorative ones(with pictures or sayings on them) to make outfits out of.

    3) Footies (I have 2 newborn sized ones)-We have about 5 or 6 newborn and a whole ton more of 0-3(if these sizes are a little bigger but newborn don't fit then roll up the sleeves and it's not a big deal) and 3-6 month sizes. That is what we put baby in while we are just hanging at home-no sense in dressing them up if no one is going to see them ya know?

    4) Hats (I have a gazillion)- We have one package of 5 because thats how they came. My DS hated with a passion anything on his head past day 2 and still to this day at 6 1/2 does not like wearing hats for any length of time. We figured if she likes them and the weather is colder they are a cheap item that we can always get more of.

    5) Newborn t-shirt or side snap tees (I have none, but people tell me they are good for cloth diapered newborns, but what do you put on their legs?)- Never used those but have heard other moms really like them as they are easier to put over the head.

    6) Swaddling blankets (I have a gazillion types, aden+anais/swaddleme/halos/receiving blankets)-DS hated being swaddled so I don't have any of those, but can easily get some if DD seems to like being swaddled. We have a bunch of receiving blankets that work just fine.

    7) How many diapers? I have 120 newborn disposables and 15 newborn cloth diapers. Is that enough? Too much?- My DS was 7lbs 0oz 20in at birth and was in newborn size diapers about a month-6 weeks. Right now we have one small pack of newborn size(36?) and 148 size 1 diapers. I figured that if DD is on the smaller side like DS then the one small pack of newborn will get us through the first few days and we or DH can always run to the store and get more.

For me, we LOVED the footless pjs. It's almost all I used with DS and I don't think I have but one or two this time around. Also, the NB shirts, for me, were a must until the cord fell off, then it was all onesies. I think your list is good!

I haven't even thought about the cord being in the way for clothes. How long does it usually take to fall off? Are you not able to use onesies or is that a preference?
