    Default Midwife Appointment Today

I had my 2nd appointment today with the midwife. Most of the appointment was done with a midwifery student as the midwife I was supposed to see was busy. The student was very nice and went through some things and answered some questions. Once all the basic paperwork type things were done my midwife (well actually my back up midwife) came in and they tried to find the baby's heartbeat. The student had trouble finding it and gave up, but my midwife was able to find it with quite a bit of searching. The heart rate was 168. So relieved to hear the baby's heart beating away. Also discussed with my midwife running and she gave me the go-ahead to keep doing things and told me to make sure I listen to my body if things aren't feeling good. We also discussed a vacation I have planned for March and whether it is a good idea to go. The vacation is to Hilton Head and I need to look into whether I am insured if I were to have a premature birth out of the country. Hoping the insurance we have will be adequate, because I really want to go on vacation and it's been booked for months (long before I knew I was pregnant)! Next appointment is in a month and at that point I will get my requisition for my "big" ultrasound. I'm sure the next 4 weeks will just fly by!

Editing to add a belly shot! This was taken last week, so at about 11 weeks

Sounds like a great appointment! And I love your bump!

We scheduled a big family vaca with extended family to disneyworld before finding out I was pregnant. Thankfully, there's tons of kid friendly and pg-friendly rides there, but I'm just hoping the nausea subsides by then so I can really enjoy it. The thought of being on a plane right now the way I'm feeling is not a pleasant one:/

How many weeks will you be at the time your trip is scheduled? Does the airline have any restrictions on flying at a certain point in your pregnancy?

I think I will be about 34-35 weeks during the trip. We would drive down, not fly, Google maps says it's a 16 hour drive, with our family's history it will likely take more like 24, LOL, we stop often, and with a very pregnant bladder we might have to stop even more. We are Canadian, so we are most worried about the cost if we were to go into premature labour outside our country given the cost of healthcare in the US.

You can buy extra health insurance for travel and I know my husband's policy includes travel but I would probably pay the $20 to get more coverage.

Yay! Glad they found a strong healthy heartbeat! Great baby bump pic! ^_^ That's awesome that they cleared you to keep the exercise regime up.

Yes, we are covered through DH for put to $250K per person. So I have a bit of insurance, just don't know if its enough.

In the states? Not a chance. NICU stays are very expensive. I personally would get extra insurance on yourself (I would ask if it would cover the baby if born early).

Unfortunately it's likely no one would insure me, given I am already pregnant. We are likely going to go barring any complications beforehand. I've had 3 babies already all born well after 40 weeks with no early labour issues. I would hope if I did give birth there we could do a medical transfer back to Canada ASAP. The insurance we have will cover the baby as well, we have confirmed that.

My DS1 was born at 33.5 weeks and had a 17 day NICU stay. I was also in the hospital for about a week, 4 days prior to his birth while they had me on mag sulfate to give shots for his lung development. The total cost was well below your insured level so I think you would be fine. It might not be enough for a really early baby but at 34 to 35 weeks I don't think it would be a problem. That is given that the only problem(s) with the baby are just needing time to develop and no other complications.

Actually SHE doesn't need extra insurance, the baby does. The most expensive labor would be a c-section, but once a baby is born, the NICU charges go to the baby, not the mom.
