Yuk. I can't take them at all. My dr had to take me off of them when I was pg, because I was getting so sick. We came to a compromise - I take a regular vitamin, plus a couple of other supplements, to get everything except the iron.

I'm okay with them until i'm actually pregnant, then they make me feel sick, so i take them at night instead. I've been taking them for so long now it's just part of who i am!! I started them in April 2005.

I am like Sarah and take them at night... And I have been taking prenates a year now, so I hardly think about it. When I was pregnant though I had to take them in the middle of a meal so I wouldn't get naseaus. I have heard about other ladies though that take the flintstones chewables (like one pp mentioned) and most doctors are cool with that... Or you could also just take a folic acid supplement (like another pp mentioned!). I do that anyway... they are really tiny and don't have a smell/taste to them... Good luck!

Why are you guys taking prenates right now? I take a daily vitamin. Yuck I wouldn't take those nasty horse pills until I had to!

For the folic acid, I imagine. :D Regular multivitamins usually don't have the high amounts that are recommended when TTC.

Yeah, it's recommended that you take your prenatals for three months before you start TTC so that the folic acid is in your system ready for when you concieve because it builds up and prevents neural tube defects, which happen in the first trimester. If you wait until you find out you're pregnant before taking them it could be too late to prevent that kind of defect.

Plus, regular vitamins arent balanced for pregnancy, so they could have too much of what is bad for the baby, such as vitamin A, which can cause birth defects if there is too much of it.

You have to be just as careful with vitamins and herbal types of remedies when you are pregnant as you would be with prescribed drugs.

For example, everyone raves about Green Tea for helping with CM production, but it also inhibits your body's absorbtion of folic acid, which of course isnt good.

Thanks for the added info! My vits have .4 folic acid, plus I know I'm getting it out of my diet (I eat dark green leafy veggies). I thought that folic acid doesn't build up so that's why you have to make sure it's in your diet every day? I hope you ladies are keeping those vits down, I used to take them at bedtime too!

I found some really yummy prenatal vits (as in not HUGE and completely nasty tasting) at the BX on base. The one good thing the military life has done for me so far. lol

I take the nature made ones at night with chocolate milk. I have to have the chocolate milk; juice and water aren’t the same. Just think another excuse to have chocolate. Plus since I only have a few swigs, it is off limits to DH and I get to drink from the carton. Why dirty a glass. ;)

They don't bother me, but I'm a closet prenatal vitaminer. :) I don't want anyone to see them, cause no one knows we are ttc, so they are in my closet, and I sometimes forget. I guess I should find another bottle to put them in, so they are closer and more often seen. :)

LOL...good idea though!

I like the Flinstones too...I know you are supposed to take them ahead of time but I dont like them and they are horse pills....so I try to stay away til I need to take them (actually pregnant) but I do take some Flinstones....those arent so bad!

Oh man! Thank you so much about the info about the Green Tea and the Folic Acid! My OB has me on 5 mg since the m/c, and that would be a real waste (and a potential tragedy) if I continued with the Green Tea. I used it last time, and had some wicked ewcm, but I obviously have to find something else...

Sorry to hijack this thread. I'll start a new one...
