... that there is a real live doctor on pg.org? His name is Dr. Kinch and he's the mod of 'general pregnancy concerns.'

And I found out the craziest thing ever from him! Did you know that either tube can pick up an egg? Crazy! Did everyone know that already and I'm just slow?

I asked him about ectopics and here was part of his answer:

When you ovulate...either tube can pick up the egg. Pictures in books makes the egg look like it jumps to the tube but that is not right. When you ovulate fluid and the egg get flushed into the posterior culd-de-sac behind the uterus and then either tube can suck it up.

That is why folks who have lost an ovary on the right side, for example, and lost the tube on the left side, can still get pregnant easily.

Hmmm...It amazes me how many things I still don't know about my own body!

I only knew that because the doctor who did my HSG showed me the pics afterwards and explained to me the tubes are like arms and they move around, so they aren't always in their "perfect" position on either side of the uterus like you see in the textbook pictures.

(And when he was explaining the doctor waved his arms in the air like a crazy old man to demonstrate the point.) LOL!

Wow...never heard of such a thing.

And I've never heard of there being a "cul-de-sac" space, either! :D

That's really good to know. Thanks for sharing. I didn't know that either, and I'm always asking about my body and how it works. Funny, no dr. has ever told me that.
