So I've been hypothyroid for about 10 years. Prior to that, I was hyperthyroid for about a year. Being hyper wasn't so bad. I mean I would eat like crazy and would actually lose weight. AF didn't show for about 5 or 6 months. Then I was diagnosed and as part of the treatment, my thyroid gland was killed off half way with radio active iodine. Since then I've been hypo which sucks big time. It's the total opposite of hyper. I hardly eat yet I can't lose weight. My metabolism is so slow so I can't keep the weight off. I'm scared of not being able to conceive or having difficulties while prego because of my weight or because of the disease itself. Is anyone else in my boat?

Hi, I was diagnosed with hypo when I was about 12. I take synthroid everyday and get my levels tested about every 6 months or so (depends on when I can get into the doc).
I have always had trouble losing weight and my periods are a bit on the irregular side.
I was able to get get pregnant twice but sadly lost both of them.

have you ever been to an endocrineologist? I've been seeing one since about the time i hit puberty and was diagnosed as hypo, and a bunch of other stuff.

Hi! Hope you don't mind me dropping in. :) I used to be on this site months ago (Jan-Apr).

My story...

I developed severe hyperthryoidism with my first pregnancy and at the time my endo did not tell me that it is very common to turn hypo a couple of months after giving birth. This is what happened to me at six months postpartum. I started putting on weight and my diet had not changed and I was still exclusively breastfeeding at the time. Finally, I went back to my endo and after testing for Cushings and all sorts of things, she determined officially that I had hypothryoidism.

My endo is very aggressive and checks levels every 2-3 months. She would adjust my levels and also sent me to a nutritionist. My cycles were not 100% regular because of breastfeeding and the hypothyroidism. By 6-9 months, I started to get regular.

Now, I am pg with #2 and I can tell you this, I lost 20 lbs before my first ob appt and I am still under that initial weight loss at 24 weeks. My endo sees me every four weeks and did tell me that she likes to keep her pg patients on a slightly higher dose of synthryoid.

Hope this helped a little. Good luck.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. That's what I'm afraid of too...

Thank you all for your replies. I'm going to look into going to an endo. Right now I'm only seeing an internal medicine doctor. The levels he has me on don't see to work or keep me under control. I'm very very affraid of miscarrying. DH and I just decided last night to start trying right away and not wait until October. I'll be devistated if something bad were to happen...
