I know some of you are interested in the case of missing Madeleine McCann. Today the family returned back to the UK, having spent the summer in Portugal trying to remain close to the investigation. In the last few days, both parents were named as official suspects by the Portuguese police. It has been reported that Kate McCann was offered a deal by the police to basically confess and receive 2 years or less in prison. She, of course, refused to do so and maintains their innocence. Here's a report from the BBC on their return. If you watch the statement they make at the airport, IMO, it is clear from the distress in Gerry McCann's voice that they have had nothing to do with the disappearance of their daughter. This is so heartbreaking.

The belief I hold is that the portuguese police just want an end to this case by any means possible. They have been embarrassed on an international scale by the deficiencies in their searches and approach to this whole situation. In the absence of anything concrete, lets blame the parents. Let's face it, if they had any absolute forensic proof of the parents involvement (which they allegedly have) then why the hell would they allow them to leave the country? You just wouldnt, would you. Also, there are many who say the parents are to blame for leaving her alone in the first place. Yes, this was a mistake of mammoth proportions but WTF kind of world do we live in where we place all the blame on them and not the person(s) who have actually taken her???

Such a sad situation. And we are still no nearer to finding out what has happened to this precious girl.

Katy, I was thinking of you when this was on the news late last week. I just keep thinking of that poor little girl!! It is so sad. Do they have 2 other children? That are back in the UK?

Yeah, they have twins - a boy and girl called Sean and Amelie. They decided to return to try and restore them to some kind of normality.

Katy, thanks for the update, this story really breaks my heart. We were in England/Italy about 3 weeks after she went missing. I was very paranoid when we were away with the girls. I often check the website to see if there is any news and am always saddened that there isn't any.

I don't know what to make of the parents being suspects, I just really hope it isn't true. I am with you in thinking the police just want to close the case and will blame anyone.

Seriously, the worlds' media has been following them around since 3 May solid, without a minute's break. When on earth would they have been able to hide and dispose of a body without anything being noticed? A forensic expert today reported that, given that the smell of a decomposed body (due to heat and the fact that 25 days had passed) would mean that there was no way they could have gotten away with transporting a body in the car they hired.

Tragic, tragic story. The parents must be terrified.

The news was making me wonder if the parents had something to do with it too Katy. But when you put it that way...Your so right. They could never have hid a body, than transported it somewhere without somebody noticing. I mean, even if they wern't noticabally followed at that moment, some photographer would have been in the bushes somewhere.
I think it is really sad though. The policia obvousally dont know how to do their job. If they were in another country, that poor child would have been found by now!

I was thinking the same as Leesa - I was starting to question the parents but now after reading your view on it, they don't seem like likely suspects. Its so easy to be persuaded by the media

I can absolutely see why the parents would be suspects - because lets face it, so many of these crimes are committed by family members. I wonder if they will ever get the real answer to this case?
