3D/4D Ultrasound

I know the gender scan is a ways away for a lot of us; but, I'm curious to know what others think about the 3D/4D ultrasound. In Canada, we have 'UC Baby' - not sure if it's the same in the states. Will everyone have this elective ultrasound? Does anyone think there are more risks associated with having it rather than just a general gender scan?

I don't know much about it, except that it does look pretty awesome judging by my friends who have had them!

I've never had a 3D/4D ultrasound. They look cool, but honestly, I'm not sure I would want one... it's kind of fun doing all the guessing about what the baby looks like before it's born, and those 3D u/s give you so much more detail that you kind of get an idea before their even born! I know, I'm weird... lol

To me 3D ultrasounds look like Han Solo trapped in the liquid carbonite (from Star Wars). They kind of creep me out. I would personally never get one. But to each their own.

I agree with azin_may, they creep me out! It looks more like an alien than a cute little baby. But as far as safety, I haven't heard anything.

I won't be getting one because I think it looks funny.

I had one with DD and they do kind of look like Hans solo but it really was quite neat. Looking at her after she was born it was cool to see how close she did look to the 3d pics. I plan on doing it if they offer it through the docs office later on. All of mine with DD were done at the docs too.

My OB is quite proud of his 3D/4D machine in office. I had several with DS and I remember after one picture they finally got of his face I cried because of his nose. I was worried it was going to be big, (I blame it on the hormones). He still has that same cute nose, it fits his face so perfectly. I'm definitely going to be having one this time around!

I think they're very cool and don't look strange at all! I think it's amazing what technology can do these days! I haven't decided whether we'll have one or not (mainly because it's an extra cost) but just curious as to others opinions on them!

I'm just curious if anyone has decided to have this done, as well! I've read so many stories lately about women finding out they're having one gender and giving birth to the opposite gender! I wasn't going to have this done; but, it's got me thinking that maybe I want to have it done just to even confirm the gender! If anyone has had this or have talked to their doctor about it, have they indicated if there's a certain time frame that should be placed between this ultrasound and the gender scan? I also don't want to have too many ultrasounds!

DH's aunt turned on the 3d/4d ultrasound during ours. The baby looks like a skeletal dino at this point but it was kind of fun to see. He was using my placenta to hide his face lol!

The optimal time for 3D/4D ultrasound is 30-32 weeks. This is just a good time when the baby is more human looking so to speak and they can get some really good pictures.

Should all ultrasound machines have this capability? It would be cool if they could do this at our 20 week ultrasound! I was under the impression that you had to go somewhere special (i.e. UC Baby) to have this done, though!

It depends. My OB's ultrasound machine has it. Hell, I think there are still some OB's without an in office ultrasound. You'd just have to ask.

I got one with DS1. The experience was neat, but it was a bit creepy LOL. it was a lot of money too. I personally am of the belief that the fewer ultrasounds the better, at 20 weeks I also prefer a fetoscope to a doppler, but that's just me Smile

Me three!

My hospital doesn't even have a 3D/4D machine so I'd have to go somewhere and pay a lot for it to be done, no thanks. I think they're a little creepy anyway but that's really just my personal opinion, as I also think the early u/s's are a bit creepy as well.

My OB did one for fun to show us back around the 14wk u/s. It was kinda cool to see, but couldn't get a clear shot of much at that point. They didn't do one at my 18wk when they did the u/s, but that's ok. It was cool, but a little strange. If they offer to do one I probably would just to see again, but it's not something I'm going to go ask for.
