Gestational Diabetes Screen

I have the one hour test on Saturday and I wasn't really given any information as to whether I have to fast, whether I shouldn't eat certain things before the test, etc. What is the drill?

Well, my paper said fasting is not necessary. I have heard some say that their doctor wants them too. Can you call the office and get the instructions from them?

I know my Dr. told me to fast, and when I went to the lab they asked me also if I was fasting, so I guess it just depends. Call and ask your Dr.

My papers say that fasting is not necessary, but that I should limit my intake of sugar on the day of the test. I think you should call your doctor's office to find out what they want you to do.

My doctor said I didn't have to for the 1-hour because if my body is processing everything correctly then it doesn't matter, But if I failed or was borderline then I would do the 3-hr and you have to fast for that one.

Yea, I failed the 1-hour by 2 points! Grr, now I have to fast for the 3 hour. Sad

I don't have to fast - just nothing sugary before the test. I've eaten my regular breakfast and will have the test in a few hours! I hope all goes well!

I'm just curious: Did anyone refuse to have this done? What are the consequences if it isn't done and GD isn't picked up?

I did it and it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be! I didn't have any waiting to do before hand; so, the appointment was literally an hour and I was out of there! The drink actually wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be... It went down pretty easy and in well under the 10 minute time frame! I did start to feel a little "jittery" after drinking it... I guess pure sugar will do that to you, though! haha I have a doctor's appointment in two weeks; so, I guess I will find out then whether I passed or not! Do they usually call before your next appointment if you fail? Fingers crossed! I definitely don't want to have to do the three hour after just reading that it's twice as sugary and twice the amount of liquid... haha

Might depend on the doctor. Mine said they would call if I needed the 3hr because they would want to schedule it asap, not wait until my next appt then schedule it. Plus they'd get you in with a nutritionist as well as soon as possible. She mine had the results the next day by 10am.

:lurk:
A friend sister had undiagnosed (until too late, they caught it just before the end of her pregnancy) and she had a very large baby (around 12pound) who needed some time in the special care nursery for monitoring. I am unsure of the longer term effects etc though.

Yeah, I took the test on a Tuesday and got a call from the office on Thursday saying I failed and needed the 3 hour one. I waited 2 weeks to go for the 3 hour one because I wanted the giant bruise to heal before getting stabbed 4 times. If you have to take the 3-hour one, you drink the same amount of liquid, it just has double the glucose in it. I hope you passed!!! Fasting and then having to wait 3 hours to eat breakfast was terrible.

I get to drink mine a half hour before my appointment, so I don't even have to sit there for a full hour, which is kind of nice. Smile But I would be there for a whole hour anyway, since I have an appointment with the CNP that day anyway. As far as I understand, I'll have my results before I even leave the office that day.

Surprise to me! I went into my OB appt today and she was like Oh you havent done it yet? Go ahead and head to the lab if you have an extra hour... no fasting required. So I am not sure bc in the past I have had to fast ? I would call just to be sure.

I didn't have to fast! If I don't hear from my doctor this week, I'll assume I passed and don't have to do the three hour (since my next appointment isn't for another two weeks)!
