Lunchmeat?

OK... so I had a Subway ham sandwich today for lunch. Now I am worried about the whole Listeria thing. Can you eat lunchmeat (without heating) it at any point during pregnancy? Should I be worried?

I've had numerous sandwiches since getting pregnant and have a friend who has eaten Subway almost daily during her third pregnancy. This is the first time I've heard anything about not eating sandwich meats.

Iv heard to avoid it as well from my ob and midwife for the Listeria factor but I am of the belief that every once in a while is okay. Example, I've had a hot dog because dammit I wanted one! And I'm planning to have a salad with raw ahi on it in May because I never get to go to the place that has it and I love it!! I think there is always going to be a risk but I don't believe in absolutely denying yourself something you want all the time. And like B-Baby said, there are plenty of women who have had lots during pregnancy. Just know the risk and make your own choice. *hugs* personally I think you are fine!

Ugh. I want Subway. I didn't eat any with the first pregnancy and I've been good with this pregnancy. I asked the Health Department when I went for a WIC appointment and they said it is still a no go unless you get the sub toasted which I hate.

They did change the rules on tuna and I had some of that for the first time Sunday.. but.. well.. I spent most of yesterday sick. Sad

Hi,
I am sure you are fine, but when I go to Subway...I opt for the terriakki(I can't spell that!!!) chicken, steak or chicken breast...and I tell them to make it really hot.
I avoid all lunch meats...but I am a worrier!!! I do eat nitrate free hot dogs (occasionally) but boil them and make sure they are really hot.

I had read about avoiding luncheon meat for that very reason so I did avoid it during pregnancy #1 and will again this time. That said I eat sushi (California rolls - nothing exotic) from reputable restaurants despite also reading that that is a possible no-no. I also have friends who insist on cooking me well done meat instead of my usual medium rare steak but if I were making it or ordering it I would go medium rare. There are so many things - you just have to take in the facts and make your own judgement.

To the bolded: GROSS! LoL! I am a rare kind of gal, and I'll stay that way pregnant or not!

My motto is: everything in moderation.
Too much of any one thing is not good for you regularly, so of course it's not going to be good for you on during pregnancy. There are few things I avoid during pregnancy, generally I just watch what I take in and make sure I"m getting a bit of everything! A little lunch meat isn't going to hurt.

Also, I enjoy subs too much to give them up any time soon Wink

I've been to three different OB's and they all said to not worry about lunch meat. But I have read in lots of books that you shouldn't eat it unless it's cooked to a certain temperature and to also eat only nitrate free lunch meat and bacon.

When I was 27 weeks, I went to L&D for an issue. While there, they fed me turkey sandwiches (cold). Since then, I felt if they thought it was OK, so could I!

I wasn't worried initially because I buy our deli meat from Costco and would think it's safe, but DH is the one who had to look at the ingredients and see nitrate listed and tell me I shouldn't eat it. Then, we went to our dr appt and she said the same thing that I should avoid it because of the listeria thing. But before that appt I was eating a sandwhich almost every day, so probably about six weeks of early pregnancy and I am doing fine and I also had a hot dog because I wanted one, but DH also doesn't want me eating those. I agree with the people who say in moderation you should be fine, but DH is not having any of it and doesn't want to take any risks. So, guess it's up to you!

I eat lunch meat. I have with all three pregnancies and never had an issue. When I was pregnant with my youngest DD, I ate Subway 3 or 4 times a week because I craved it all the time. I also have been eating tuna, seafood and other fish... just in moderation. As for my steak - pregnant or not, I'm eating it med rare.

Honestly, I just can't see spending my pregnancy panicked about lunch meat. But then again, I've cut out artificial sweetener in this pregnancy, so I guess everyone has their thing. LOL

You shouldn't eat much lunch meat pregnant or not anyway. Everything in life in moderation. Keep yourself healthy and don't worry about the occasional "bad" food.
