I had my 16 week appt today. Things went well. Baby's heartbeat was 166. DD came along and she got to hear the heart beat. She was a little preoccupied with the Ipad so didn't get too excited about it.
I'd say I'm up 10-12 lbs already. I hate stepping on the scale at the office because it always reads 5 lbs more than mine at home. But it probably has to do with the fact that at home I step on the scale 1st thing in the AM, after I pee, before I eat, without all my clothes on.
We had bloodwork drawn today since that hadn't been done. In addition to the usual OB panel, she drew some iron levels since my restless legs have been worse than usual & she said sometimes low ferritin levels can aggravate RLS.
Originally, she said she'd have me start my 17HP shots (to prevent preterm labor) at 16 weeks, but she said I could wait until 17-18 weeks if I want. I can pick them up from the pharmacy any time to get started.
I also met with their billing consultant who explains how all the charges work, and I was annoyed to hear that as of the 1st of the year my insurance company (which is owned by the hospital that DH & I work at and where I will be delivering at) changed so that they will cover no more than 3 ultrasounds. Keep in mind, the plan is to have ultrasounds every two weeks starting at 20 weeks to watch my cervical lengths to make sure they aren't shrinking. With DS' pregnancy, my MW was able to write a letter to them explaining it was a medical necessity, and they covered all of the ultrasounds for me - I think I ended up having 8 u/s with that pg. No longer the case, after 3 (I already had one u/s at 6 weeks for spotting), I will have to pay out of pocket for every ultrasound
My 20 week u/s will be in 4 weeks and we plan to find out baby's gender at that point if we can.
We talked a little bit about birthing classes and labor and she did recommend another book for me to read as I told her I was leaning toward having an epidural this time. I can tell she doesn't approve, but said, if it ends up that I need one, then that's fine.
Insurance companies can be so dumb, aren't the u/s for preventing you from having the baby early? That would cost them so much more! With our second, ours wanted to charge us the annual deductible once for each year since he was due in early 2008 but most prenatal care was in 2007. And it was over $2000 per year.
It sounds like a pretty good appointment otherwise. Do you have to give yourself shots for the pre-term labor stuff?! I don't know if I could do that.
dh Andy of 11 wonderful years
ds Theodore is 7 (Nov '05) 4lbs 10 oz, 18.5 inches @ 37 weeks
ds Zachariah is 5 (Jan '08 ) 5lbs 4 oz, 19 inches @ 38.5 weeks
dd Annabeth (Aug 2 '13) 7 lbs 5 oz, 19.75 inches @39.5 weeks
Wait, the insurance won't cover the scans even though they are medically necessary to prevent possible per term labor? That's ridiculous. I'd be so mad. Can the drs office cut you some kind of deal and charge you less for each one or like charge you for 2 instead of the rest of them?
And your OB is against you getting an epidural? Why? Just curious.
Oh and I totally hate getting weighed at my appts too! Because it's always in the afternoon after I've had two meals and I'm wearing all my clothes, blah.
Any guesses as to if it's a boy or girl?
As far as the epidural -- I see a Nurse Midwife, so she is into more of the natural route than a medicated one
I'm guessing girl?? I really didn't have a guess with the other kiddos, but I'm guessing girl this time!
