I know this board is pretty much dead.. but I want your opinions (those who DO visit here).
My son is 3 years and 3 months old. He started Preschool at the end of January (right after he turned 3). Toilet training was not something they required for him due to his developmental delays. They suspected that it might be a while still before he's "ready" for toilet training, but that they go to the bathroom at school at certain times and he might just catch on to the idea.
For the past few weeks, he randomly makes a mad dash for the toilet screaming "gotta pee" or something else saying the same thing. He runs into the bathroom and lifts the lid, climbs onto the toilet (fully clothed and diapered) and sits for about 1 breath. Then says "I all done", hops off the toilet, flushes and closes the lid, then runs away. He doesn't tell me that he needs a new diaper after this, and protests when I TRY to change him. He is not on a diaper schedule, in fact, I'm finding as I'm attempting to create a schedule for things, he protests because it is not HIS idea.
When he does book it for the bathroom, my guess is he feel that he's wet because he has already peed. When I ask him if he needs help to take off his pants and diaper, he says no, but does not try to himself. There is no particular time of day that he pees or poops (his stinkies are still loose and unpredictable), so I am unable to predict the events and get him in the right place for it.
I tried "naked bottom" routine with him earlier this week (that's what worked for his brother.. he would NOT pee if he was naked) but it didn't work. He would "tinkle" a small amount about every 20-40 minutes but would not realize it even happened. When I playfully said "You peed on my floor!" he became shocked and scared of the tiny puddle he created (does not like having his feet wet), but did not show any shame or desire to fix it. I began to think that he might not "feel" that he urinated like he does with the diapers because there is no wet warmth pressing up against him.
Anyway... I've rambled.
Does anyone have any suggestions? He will seem ready, but when I try to get him excited he backs off and refuses. He'll deny a wet or soiled diaper and I practically have to tackle him to change him. It's very frustrating.
Thanks for reading.
