A Day in The Life of Shanyn Nicole

S,

I'm starting this a little late as you are almost 3 months old now, but better late than never!! I'm going to back up a few months and re-post your birth story.

It went like this....

On the morning of the 27th of January, 2003, (around 8 a.m.) I began having mild contractions that were spaced about 3 minutes apart. They slowed down and began to get a little irregular so I did not really pay them much attention. Around 10 a.m. they began to get a little stronger and when I began timing they were exactly 2 minutes apart, lasting about 40 seconds. At this point I decided it was time to call Jason (aka Daddy) and head to Labor & Delivery to be checked.

Daddy came home from School (we'll talk about that more later) and grabbed our bags, the camera, and us and we headed off to the hospital!

I truly thought that I would be sent home experiencing either just the early stages of labor, or false labor. I was in very little to no pain and talking pretty steadily throughout the contractions.

We arrived at the hospital around 11:30 a.m. When we walked in the doors of the hospital we heard them page our doctor (which was terribly funny! It was like they were announcing our arrival even though it was a totally unrelated page) We bumped into him (Dr. Thibideau) coming out of Labor & Delivery! He told us to go ahead to be checked and that if he was needed they would page him.

They monitored the contractions for about 20 minutes and when the doctor on call finally made it out to the observation room, I was 8 cm dialated! I laughed at her in disbelief when she told me!

They called Dr. T. up from family practice. (He didn't believe them because he said he had just seen me and I wasn't in any pain! HaHa!) He very quickly decided that we should break my water to keep things progressing. That upped the pain a little, but it was still manageable. At around 2:45 p.m. it was time to start pushing. I wanted to give up somewhere around 3:15, but with much help from Daddy (who is an absolute wonderful man in every sense of the word) I "pushed through the pain" and at 3:49p.m. the (IMHO) most beautiful little girl in the world was born!

You weighed 6lbs 4.3oz and were 19.5 inches long and I was instantly in love!

In the beginning, You & I had a little difficulty getting the breastfeeding going in a good direction! You were quite a bit jaundiced in the first few days! But we kept at it and everything turned out great!

The first person to visit you was your Nanna Kate. She drove from Oklahoma with her friend Kay. We spent quite a few days just watching you sleep!

During your first month you did not much more than eat and sleep! Grammy was here for your 1 month 'birthday'! We took you to have your pictures made. (You didn't like the bright lights and the flash!)

By month two you were holding up your head pretty steady and finally smiled at us! I honestly can't remember when the first smile occurred, but I will always remember what it looked like! (Beautiful!)

Somewhere in the 2nd/3rd month you began sleeping for 6 whole hours at night which was absolutely wonderful!

Now you giggle at us and have started making 'words'. Your favorite thing to say seems to be 'goo' followed very closely by 'ng-e' (which we have decided to be our prodigy child saying she is "Hungry"! You hold your head up so high, and any day now we are sure you will turn over (you try so hard). Just today you have become very grumpy and are sucking on your hand a LOT. Those two things combined with the drool makes us wonder if you are teething! Time will tell...

I can't remember what life was like before you, nor would I ever want to try! You are one of the two most wonderful things that has ever happened to me!

Appointment stats:

February 10, 2003: 2 week appointment you weighed 6 lbs 6 oz and were still measuring at 19.5 inches long.

March 28, 2003: 2 month appointment, you weighed 10 lbs 2 oz, and were up to 22 inches long. Received 5 shots/ hated life!

May 28, 2003: 4 Month appointment, you weighed 12 lbs 7 oz, and were recorded at 24 inches long! Got another 5 shots and were very unhappy for the rest of the evening!

*That was our last appointment with Dr. Thibodeau! I am still waiting to find out who we will be assigned to next.

July 29, 2003: 6 month appointment, you weighed 13 lbs, 11 oz, and at 25 3/4 inches long! Just 3 shots this time, you managed to get through the first without crying, but the next two got ya! We were reassigned to Dr. Lyon, but I don't think we'll be seeing him again unless you get sick! We will be transferred before you need your 1 yr checkup/shots!

Rolled Over!

Add today to the list as one of the milestones of your development!

You rolled over! From tummy to back, twice in a row and from the look on your face you have decided that it is the most fun thing you've learned to do! I must admit I am pretty excited about it as well! I called your Grammy (but she wasn't home so I will probably talk to her tonight) and I called your Nanna Kate. Nanna Kate was very proud of you and can't wait until she can see you do this with her own eyes! Smile

You're on the fast track to growing up kiddo and part of me is saddened by that, but none of me would accept the alternative!

Yesterday your Daddy & I went on our first date since you were born. We went to lunch and a movie. You stayed with Ms Kathy. You acted perfectly for her, and really didn't seem to notice when we left or came back. That is reassuring and sad all at the same time, for me. Though I suppose that at 3 months I probably shouldn't have expected much of a reaction from you!

You haven't rolled over for daddy yet. I do hope that you will sometime soon! Though he does have a hard time not holding you when he is home and not studying!

He graduated school on this past Wednesday. He was at the top of his class for this part of the school. You & I are going to be working very hard to help keep him there! So get your pom poms ready kiddo we've got some cheering to do!

To date, the best feeling in the world (besides seeing your smile), is you sound asleep on my chest listening to you take your precious little breaths. Smile

S,

Yesterday you turned 3 months old! Time is flying by!! It seems like just yesterday we brought you home from the hospital!

You are getting stronger each day. Turning over seems to be your favorite pass time! It makes us so happy to watch you!!

Nothing extra-ordinary happened. We missed getting your portraits done because we are a little short on money right now. Hopefully we will be able to have them done within the next week as I wanted to capture the 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 9th months in portraits! Then we could start a yearly tradition!

Your Grammy did call and wished you a happy 3 month birthday! I held the phone to your ear so that you could hear her. You seemed to be listening, but really didn't show any emotion! Maybe, next time Smile

Gotta run, you're calling me!

S,

I missed posting on your 4 month birthday!! Oh the things you've done! You're sitting up very well these days! (With our assistance of course!) Your laughs are so much more frequent! And just yesterday we started feeding you some rice cereal! You took to it quite naturally!! You even took the spoon away from your daddy and started putting it in your mouth all by yourself!! You had to have a little assistance in refilling the spoon, but after the spoon was full you put it perfectly in and took a bite!!

Today you went on an outing with daddy! You guy spent about 4 hours away! Went to the base and saw the stationary planes and the little park, and then you went to the Mall and watched the people walk by! Daddy said you slept through most of it, but that he felt like you guys had really bonded and he had a WONDERFUL time!!

You've started 'playing' on the computer! you sit in my lap and tap on the keyboard, or the back of my hands!

What a little wonder you are! It's like watching someone turn on switches in your little brain! Every day a new light comes on! I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

All my love,
Mom

S,

Its been a while since I sat down to write. You have grown so much in that time! It appears that you are starting to reach for us when we pick you up! That makes my heart all warm inside! You've begun blowing raspberries at us!

We said Good bye to Dr. Thibodeau on Friday. He is transferring to Puerto Rico. I am sad that he is gone. He is a very good doctor, and I will miss seeing him at your appointments as I truly trusted his opinions about my "first time mom" questions! He re-assigned us, himself, so hopefully the doctor he chose for us is just as kind and trustworthy!

Daddy has his first flight this week! He is very excited to finally be in a real plane, instead of the trainers! Though I think he is nervous too!

Tomorrow you and I are going on a road trip to meet Aunt Diana, Uncle John, and Leslie! I'm very excited for you to meet them! Aunt Diana can hardly stand the wait! She has been so anxious to meet you since the day you were born!

I wanted to make a special note to tell you about the way you've begun to nurse recently! This happens mainly at your nighttime feeding. You've been laying ever so sweetly in my arms, but putting your hand up over your eyes! You have a very "Scarlet O'hara"-esque look to you when you do this! I imagine that this is just you becoming the "Princess" that we know you will be! What a drama queen we'll have! Which is fine, by the way. Mom was one! err...>is

I have more laundry to do now darling! And I think I just heard you stir a little, so you're probably waking up.

I will try to keep up with this a little better from now on!

I love you dearly!

We gave you a pickle today, Shanyn! It was a bread n butter (aka sweet) pickle! You seemed to like the flavor as you kept sucking on it for quite some time!

We also gave you your first sippy cup today! You're already a pro at using it, though I don't think that you like the grape juice that much..(an icky face each time you sip!)

The teeth are still moving up, but none have broke through.

Today we watched the Divine Secrets of the Ya-ya Sisterhood. I do hope that we have a mother-daughter relationship that will shadow all others! Though I know we'll have our rough times, you'll always be my baby beans!

Love you so much,

Shanyn,

It is so amazing to me how time flies! In just a few days you will be 6 months old! Wow! A whole half a year!

You have recently started sitting up. Though you don't do it quite on your own yet. I help you to get to that position. And you're still a bit wobbly when you are actually up! I won't say that you've got it down yet, but you surely are working on it!

Daddy thinks taht his orders are set for Hawaii now! Looks like we'll be moving there at the end of this year! How about a Luau for your first birthday? Smile

I hope that we'll get to swing through Texas before we head south! I would like for you to meet your great grandparents! They are all getting on in age and I'm afraid that they won't be around much longer.

Not a lot of adventure planned for today! Mom's car is still in the shop! Sad

I am going to wrap this up now dear!

I love you with half of my heart (Daddy gets the other half! Wink )

I wish I could keep up with this on a daily basis sweetheart! I seem to get sidetracked or too busy playing with you to sit down and write though!

Daddy's patch on his flight suit has become your favorite new toy! You try so hard to take it off and stick it right in your mouth! I wonder if the velcro feels good on your gums?

You are still trying to crawl, but have not quite yet mastered the art of it! Reverse works really well, but you get so frustrated seeing your toys get further and further away from you!

We're still working on our signs! I think that you understand milk as well as eat, but you still have not signed back. I can't wait for the day that you do! You seem a little confused at the Mommy and Daddy signs. I do not know if it is because they are so similar or if I am not using them at an appropriate time for you to understand.....we'll keep working on them!

We are definitely heading to Hawaii dear! It looks like you will spend the next few years of your life in paradise!! How exciting it is going to be! You & I can be beach bums when daddy deploys!

I love you so much!

Walking before crawling. Everyone says you're supposed to do it the other way around, but it appears that you aren't listening to them! It's a completely assisted walk, but it appears that you like it better than the crawl.

On Friday, August 15, you pulled up to stand and then much to my suprise, took me on a tour of the living room. We stopped at your rocking plane where you played with the propeller for quite some time. Now it seems every time I sit on the floor next to you, you're ready to get up and go!

In other new, you started eating graham crackers on the 12th of August, and absolutely love them! Maybe you love that you can feed them to yourself. You seem to be a very independent being. Easy to entertain and just as satisfied to play with your toys or talk to the fan!

You amaze me in so many ways!

Almost a month has passed since I last wrote in your journal baby girl.

No new milestones have been reached, but you are still changing in so many different ways.

Right at this moment you are sitting in my lap typing on your own keyboard. I supposed you like the sound the keys make as you pound on them. I tease that you are emailing all of your friends.

You have become quite a bit more difficult to entertain. You also get quite frustrated at the fact that you can not move in any direction except backwards. You have quit rolling over, and have instead chosen to lay where you are and whine for us to pick you up.

We all hope this phase passes soon and have been on the floor crawling near you so that you can see how we do it. All in hopes that you will learn from example!

You have tired of your keybaord now so I must go to keep you busy.

Love always,
Mom

September 18, 2003 You pulled yourself up to standing for the very first time!!!! (alone)

Crawling doesn't seem too far away either! You've figured out how to get your knee forward, its just down to coordinating your arms to get you moving!

We're getting closer and closer to our move date! I can't wait to get to Hawaii! I hope that it will be a time that you remember well!

Not much new has been going on around here little one. Daddy is finally into the last phase of his school. He is going to refocus his attention on bringing up his grade, so we may not see a lot of him for the next two months, but we will have our Friday nights out, so we will all reconnect then!

You & I have begun having giggle seesions in the morning when we wake up. It has been a lot of fun watching your personality develop!

Last night at dinner we had probably 5 different people walk up to us to tell us what a beautiful little girl we had and what a great job we did. It makes me so proud to know that people think you are beautiful, but they have also commented on how well behaved and attentive you are. That makes my heart swell even more. You are something special and I can not wait to see what the future brings for you!

Watch out world, Shanyn is mobile!! Baby Bee, you started crawling (?) on the 29th of September. It truly is more of an inch worm effect, but you can get where you want to go, and quickly!

We're having quite a good time keeping you away from things that could hurt you! We weren't quite ready for you to be into everything yet! Smile

This morning, to my great suprise, I went to get youd out of your crib, and you were standing! I'm so proud! I truly cannot wait for you to start walking!

Daddy has been gone all this weekend. I can't truly tell if you are missing him or not, but you do smile at his picture and wave! Maybe you do realize he is gone.
