Wow she is here I can't believe it. It seems just like yesterday that I found out we were pregnant.
Katherine Elizabeth was born September 12th 2007 at 12:59 pm. She weighed 7 pounds and 2.9 ozs. She was 19 and a half inches long.
I had a drug free natural childbirth and a wonderful pregnancy. Only problems were gestational diabetes which I controlled with my diet. I gained only 24 pounds total. Apgars at birth were 9 and 9. Fred was a great coach through the labor and delivery. Just when I thought that I could not love him anymore he becomes the proudest father. He has been so helpful since I have been home from the hospital.
Katie came on a Wednesday. Thursday and Friday were spent at the hospital and we came home Friday afternoon. We had lot of visitors in the hospital. Lots of people from work came by and all the grandparents were so happy.
Breastfeeding is going well. The doctor was concerned that Katie had lost some weight so before we left the hospital the lactation specialist came and talked to us. She taught me how to pump and then cup feed Katie. So when we came home I was trying to feed Katie every two hours and then pumping and giving her some milk in a cup. She just could not seem to stay awake for her feeds. So of course I was concerned that she would lose more weight and I would have to give her formula which I really don't want to have to do.
So Saturday and Sunday we were pretty busy trying the feed Katie the best we could.
Wednesday was 7lbs 2.9ozs
Thursday was 6lbs 15ozs
Friday was 6lbs 9.3ozs
Saturday was 6lbs 9ozs.
We went to the ped today and Katie was up to 6lbs 12ozs, so thats a 3 oz gain since Friday, so the doc was happy about that. She was concerned that we were still having to cup feed since she was so sleepy at the breast. She made us an appt to see the LC today also.
We went to see them and they weighed her then I feed her. She ate for about 10 mins, her normal, then fell asleep. She ate 1.5ozs out of one breast, which is really good. Then we put her on the other breast and she ate half an oz before falling asleep. So the LC told me that was great and to keep up feeding her every 2 to 3 hours and I can stop pumping and doing the cup feeding for now.
We are going back to the ped on Friday for another weight check. The LC were so nice and told me if I had any more concerns to just give them a call and they would help, they also want me to call on Friday with her weight to see if we need to do anything different.
I thought it was so neat that they can weigh the baby before and after a feeding to see how much they ate.
So I feel a lot better about how things are going with the breastfeeding now.
She is just the sweetest baby and I am so in love with her. She is so cute and I can't believe she is ours.
Well Katie is a week old already, today was my actual due date. I thought it was time to write up my birth story.
September 12th, the day I will never forget and one of the happiest in my life. I had to work 7 to 1 that day and then I had a doctors appt at 2:30. I woke up before the clock went off, about 5:30 with some contractions but I really didn't think it was the real thing because I had been having some BHs in the days before. I lied there and tried to time them to see if they were regular but they really were not. So at 6 I got up and got dressed for work. I didn't tell Fred about the contractions since I thought that they would just go away like they had before.
I got to work at 6:45 and still was having them so I started to write down the times they were coming. Then I went to the bathroom about 8:30 and had some bloody show. So I started to get excited and thought this really might be it. Luckily I work at the hospital that I was delivering at, so I went and asked my friend Stephanie if she wanted to take a trip up to OB with me.
So we walked upstairs and went back to L&D. I told them I was having some contractions so they took me into a room and I changed into a gown while they went to get my records. I wanted to hold off on calling Fred until I knew for sure this was it. They came in and hooked me up to the monitors and saw that I was having some regular contractions. About 9 they checked me and I was already at 4cm so today was going to be the day. I called Fred and told him he needed to come to the hospital that he was going to become a daddy today. I also called my mom.
Right after I called Fred Dr. W came in and broke my water. There really was not much that came out. Then the nurse came in and started my IV since I am GBS positive and had to get antibiotics. They also drew some blood. Then about 9:30 my mom got there and Fred and his mom were right behind her. I was already having to use some breathing to make it through the contractions at this point.
I was starting to really get uncomfortable at this point so I went into the bathroom and sat on the toilet which actually helped. About 10:30 they came in and hung the antibiotics. I continued to labor well with my breathing and such. Fred was such a great coach. Around 11 I was really having some good contractions so they came a checked me again and I was already at 7cm. The nurse said she could not believe I was a first time mom going so fast. The nurse was great and in the beginning asked me how I wanted to manage pain. I was always said that I was not totally against pain medications or epidurals but I wanted to really try to go all natural. I also knew if I could make it to 7cm that I was almost there. She never once asked me if I wanted pain meds.
So now I was really hurting and Fred was right there in my face telling me to breath and keeping me concentrated. I felt like I was losing control and I could not handle it. He was so reassuring and kept telling me I was almost there and I could do it. I started to get the urge to push about 12:30. They came in and checked me again and I was at a 10.
It felt so good to be able to push. So they had me push a few times to see how I would do. They said the baby was down low and it would not take long. They had to continue to push with the contractions and about 12:45 Dr. A came in. I kept pushing with all my might. Then at 12:59 pm Katherine Elizabeth entered the world. The doc asked Fred if he wanted to cut the cord, which he did not so I cut it myself. I could not believe that she was here. Her apgars were 9 and 9. They lied her on my chest for a while then took her to clean her and assess her. I had a small episiotomy that the doc repaired. The antibiotics were not in my system long enough so they also had to take some blood from Katie.
They brought her back to me and we put her on the breast. The nurse went and got my mom and mother in law. I felt so much better and I was so proud of myself for going drug free and all natural. The nurses could not believe that I went drug free, evidently I was the talk of the day. I could not have done it without Fred's support. I have never had such a exciting experience in my life. I feel so blessed.
Katie is 9 days old today. We went for her doctors appt this morning. It went very well, her weight is up to 7lbs 2ozs which is in the 50%. The doctor was very pleased with how much she had gained and the fact that she was just breastfeeding with no supplements at all. She was 20 1/2 inches long which is in the 75%, head was 35 which is in the 50%.
The breastfeeding is going much better, still a little sore but not too bad really. I am so thankful that it is going well. I really wanted it to work out since it is the best thing for her. I feel so blessed that Katie is happy and healthy. I just thank God everyday.
Fred went back to work today. I am really going to miss him being here. He has been such a big help. It just makes me fall in love with him everytime he kisses Katie. He is already such a loving father. I just love him so much.
Katie is 11 days old and her cord stump fell off last night. Yeah I can give her a real bath and now we don't have to worry about messing with that cord. I am feeling pretty tired lately. She is eating about every 2 hours during the night so its hard. She eats then I change her and she goes right back to sleep though. I am only up for about 20 or 30 minutes at a time but it is tiring. She is such a good baby, she normally only cries when she is hungry.
Katie is 2 weeks and 2 days old now. We have had a few trying days this week. She was so fussy and crying a lot and it makes me feel horrible because I just don't know what to do to make her feel better. We had a good day yesterday and today has been great. Its just when she is crying it makes me upset too. This week we have been trying to get on more of a schedule. I think she was just snacking a lot and not really getting full so we have been breastfeeding every 3 hours and it seems to be helping a lot. She now eats for longer and she has also been sleeping more at night. I have been feeding her on a 9, 12, 3 and 6 schedule. She has been waking up at night right on time the last 2 nights.
She is just the sweetest baby and I just want what is best for her. We have been going for walks around the neighborhood as well. I am finally getting brave enough to take her out. We all 3 went out to eat last night for the first time. She slept the whole time. I just love her so much.
Katie is 3 weeks and 2 days old. I can't believe it has already been 3 weeks. We are doing pretty well. Katie seems to have a fussy period in the evenings. Fred has been so helpful when he gets home from work. Last night we gave her a bottle of breastmilk for the first time. She did well with it. She has to get used to taking a bottle for when I go back to work. We have also been walking in the mornings with my friends at the park. It is nice to get out and exercise.
Wow Katie is 4 weeks old today. Time has went by so fast. I went and got her pictures made today for the first time. She did pretty good for a while then started getting cranky. I can't wait to see them. They took one pose of her with just her diaper on. It is so cute.
She is still doing good. Sleeping for 2-3 hours at a time. She is still getting her fussy period in the evenings. I have been putting her in her crib to sleep about 9pm each night. A few times she has slept for 4 hours when I put her down at night. I think thats good for a 4 week old.
I can tell she has gotten bigger already too. Her clothes are not as baggy and she is heavier. We go back to the doctor on Monday. She is just the sweetest thing. Sometimes when she is nursing she gets the a smile on her face that just melts my heart.
Katie is now 1 month and 4 days old. We had her 1 month doctor appt yesterday. She is up to 9 pounds and 4 ozs, 21 1/2 inches long. Her head is 37 1/2 cm. The doctor said everything was looking well. She also got her second Hep B shot. Her baby acne is still there and the doctor said we can put a little hydrocortisone 1% on it to help it but it will go away on its on soon. I asked her about Katie lying with her head to the right a lot and she said we can do these neck exercises to help her stretch her neck muscles. We also are going to start a vitamin D supplement everyday. The doctor said breastfeed babies need it.
She is still doing well with getting a bottle everyother day. We went to visit my dad and grandmother this past Sunday. My grandmother was so excited to see Katie. Things seem to be going well with my dad also. He was so happy to see us. He just held Katie and talked to her. It was very cute.
I am feeling very tired still. Katie is getting up every 2 to 3 hours during the night and it is wearing me out. I am only up for 15 to 20 minutes but I am still tired. I have to go to the doctor next week for my 6 week post partum appt.
Katie is 6 weeks old now. I went and picked up her pictures we had made when she was a month old and it is amazing that she has already changed since then. The pictures turned out great. I also started to make my scrapbook.
I went and had my doctors appt this week. Everything is good and almost back to normal. I also went and had a flu shot like Katie's ped recommended.
Katie is doing well this week also. She still has her fussy period in the evenings. I am still feeding her every 3 hours or so. Hopefully she will extend that sometime. I am so pleased at how breastfeeding is going. I am so proud of myself that we have not had to supplement with formula at all and that all the growing she is doing is because of mommy's milk.
I swear she is just the cutest thing I have ever seen. She is starting to smile more and more and it just melts my heart. She is changing before my eyes and it is amazing. I thank God everyday that he blessed us so much.
Katie is 7 weeks old now. We dressed her up as a bear for her very first halloween. We just sat around the house and gave out candy to the kiddos. We did walk around and show Katie off to all the neighbors. They all said she was so cute. Everyone always comments on her hair, how much she has and how it sticks up.
I took Katie to see Dr. M today to get her ears checked since she failed on her left ear in the hospital. Everything checked out fine and they said her hearing was perfect. I had to breastfeed her so they could do the hearing test without her crying. I am so glad that she is fine. The doctor said she probably failed her hearing test in the hospital because she was crying or moving around too much.
