Wow she is here I can't believe it. It seems just like yesterday that I found out we were pregnant.
Katherine Elizabeth was born September 12th 2007 at 12:59 pm. She weighed 7 pounds and 2.9 ozs. She was 19 and a half inches long.
I had a drug free natural childbirth and a wonderful pregnancy. Only problems were gestational diabetes which I controlled with my diet. I gained only 24 pounds total. Apgars at birth were 9 and 9. Fred was a great coach through the labor and delivery. Just when I thought that I could not love him anymore he becomes the proudest father. He has been so helpful since I have been home from the hospital.
Katie came on a Wednesday. Thursday and Friday were spent at the hospital and we came home Friday afternoon. We had lot of visitors in the hospital. Lots of people from work came by and all the grandparents were so happy.
Breastfeeding is going well. The doctor was concerned that Katie had lost some weight so before we left the hospital the lactation specialist came and talked to us. She taught me how to pump and then cup feed Katie. So when we came home I was trying to feed Katie every two hours and then pumping and giving her some milk in a cup. She just could not seem to stay awake for her feeds. So of course I was concerned that she would lose more weight and I would have to give her formula which I really don't want to have to do.
So Saturday and Sunday we were pretty busy trying the feed Katie the best we could.
Wednesday was 7lbs 2.9ozs
Thursday was 6lbs 15ozs
Friday was 6lbs 9.3ozs
Saturday was 6lbs 9ozs.
We went to the ped today and Katie was up to 6lbs 12ozs, so thats a 3 oz gain since Friday, so the doc was happy about that. She was concerned that we were still having to cup feed since she was so sleepy at the breast. She made us an appt to see the LC today also.
We went to see them and they weighed her then I feed her. She ate for about 10 mins, her normal, then fell asleep. She ate 1.5ozs out of one breast, which is really good. Then we put her on the other breast and she ate half an oz before falling asleep. So the LC told me that was great and to keep up feeding her every 2 to 3 hours and I can stop pumping and doing the cup feeding for now.
We are going back to the ped on Friday for another weight check. The LC were so nice and told me if I had any more concerns to just give them a call and they would help, they also want me to call on Friday with her weight to see if we need to do anything different.
I thought it was so neat that they can weigh the baby before and after a feeding to see how much they ate.
So I feel a lot better about how things are going with the breastfeeding now.
She is just the sweetest baby and I am so in love with her. She is so cute and I can't believe she is ours.
