Off the Vent Again… | Dear Baby P The Sequel

The big news of the day was the wee one was taken off the vent, again. Thank goodness! I guess the nurses could tell he was starting to be an upswing of feeling better as he started to pull and fight with it in comparison to the other since he was put back on it when he just was lethargic and just left it alone.

We were there when they came to take it out but I wasn’t in the nursery, the hubby was which I was o.k. with. I am not sure I was ready to watch them taken him off of it. It was hard enough seeing him look like he had been through a war over the weekend. I did see the nurse put the feeding tube back in though. He wasn’t happy with that either but I guess after all the poking and tubes going every which way I would be putting up a fight too.

He is on day 4 of the meds for the infection and they seem to be working. He is still rather puffy in the face but his stomach looks so much better. The distension in his belly over the weekend was really hard to see so I am glad that has lessened.

He is back on the nasal cannula at 4 liters on the high flow which as of tonight was handling pretty well. The nurse said he had a couple of quick self resolved desaturations.

He handled his first feed since this whole infection business started and I guess that went well too. They are going to try another feed at 10 tonight.

Otherwise he has been mostly sleeping today which I suppose is what is to be expected and I would probably be doing it myself if I had went through everything he has in the last few days along with fighting the infection.

He did have one test today in regards to his breathing or something (I need to clarify for the husband as he talked with the NP about it) and I forgot to ask the bedside nurse about it.

So far he hasn’t needed the blood transfusion they talked about possibly doing today so I will have to ask tomorrow if it’s a possiblity or not.

Other then that he is finally on the mend it seems and that makes my day. I was really worried about heading back to work with him so sick. I am still worried about balancing work with the NICU life but now that he is on the mend it helps.

Lastly I guess is just a random tid bit. We got into a conversation with a grandma and grandpa in the Family Longue. Their grandbaby had been in the NICU since April. Her parents are finally really close to getting her to come home. I hope she surgery went well today and she is able to to head home soon.

Wait there is one other small tid bit. There was some paperwork at his bedside about a study for ROP and taking pictures of babies eyes, etc. I need to read through it again but i think we may o.k. him to be in on the study as the photographs they talk about in the information I guess are a part of the ROP testing. We aren’t totally sure yet but I guess if the study can help other preemies I don’t see why not and also it is not hurting him in anyway.

With that I think it’s time to sign off and make sure the peanut is sleeping. We have been trying to get him back into a routine lately and getting him to be in his crib before falling asleep, etc and it’s been a rough ride to say the least. Hopefully it will even out soon.

As always thanks for reading and the recent good thoughts for the wee one. Here’s to hoping he keeps on the upswing.

Short & Sweet | Dear Baby P The Sequel

This entry will be short and sweet as there is not a lot to report on the wee one.

It seems as though all the nurses and doctors love him and find him cute. When neonatalogist (sp?) called me yesterday he started the conversation with well he is in his room just looking cute as ever. Then proceeded to give him the update after he rounded on him and whatnot.

He didn’t have much to tell me as they really did not change anything with his care. He is still on the o2. They attempted to wean again but a few to many desats so he is hanging at his usual 21-25% on the good ol low flow.

The nurse in the morning told him that his eye was goopy again which it had been the night before when we visited so I asked about that but the doctor said it seemed to have let up. So they are just going to watch it.

Otherwise in nurse reports in the am yesterday when I called he had a good night and they attempted as oral feed with him but he struggled to know what do with it which does not really surprise anyone. So in additional to his usual OT stuff they are going to add some oral exercise to prepare him for feeds. He does well with a nuk so that is good and helpful.

Last night when we got there it was time for his cares again so I helped with the diaper changing and temp taking.Thankfully there was no play dough fun factory in the evening.

His eye was goopy again so the nurse was going to pass it along to the nurse on the overnight shift to keep an eye on it.

He seems to have gained 3 ounces in a day so they are going to monitor that. He is now 5 pounds 9 ounces which is up from the 5 pounds 6 ounces he was the night before. For the life of me I can’t remember what he is measuring at but there was no change from the last time he was measured.

Well the peanut is picking on the cat so time to sign off and figure out what’s up with that. Also i should probably go get cleaned up to go pay the wee one a visit.

77 days | Dear Baby P The Sequel

Oh my dear wee boy

While I sit here working it dawned me that you have been calling the NICU home for 77 days.

77 days! I know it’s been a long ride but I find myself not taking the time to think about exactly HOW long of a ride it has been and still continuing to be. Maybe I learned that from your brother’s journey.

For 3 weeks with him I was a emotional mess and just wanted him home. I am internally a emotional mess now but I don’t show it as much I guess and I am learning to just go with it now and let you do what you need to do so you can come home. I want you home but I also know that you need to get all the care you need and the growing done, etc.

Life hasn’t felt complete and I know it won’t till you get home.

I look forward to the day I get to call your daddy and see how the morning is going with you and your brother. It’s hard calling every morning to see how your night went and how your morning is going. I am thankful for the nurses that take care of you but I want to hear that information from your daddy, not them…

I look forward to tucking you at night into your sleep sack and not having to call the nurse to find out how you are doing at night.

As crazy as it sounds I look forward to waking up in the middle of the night seeing how you need and/or making sure you are o.k.

I look forward to early morning episodes of Law & Order with you and your brother if he is awake. It makes for a long day but it was some special bonding time I got with your brother when he was a wee one just like you.

Oh my dear boy I hope you will be home soon and this ride will be over. Momma is tired of it and just wants all her boys under one roof, you, your brother, your daddy and even those furr balls.

Love you so much

Mom

This and That | Dear Baby P The Sequel

Where to begin with an update? I know I only have like a day and a half of stuff to write about but I feel like it is so much more. Maybe it’s becuase I am still processing some of it still…

Let’s just start writing and see where we go with this. So I am going to warn you ahead of time it may get rambling and jumbled but on the other hand if you know me in real life then that’s kind of how my brain works. Go libra brains! always moving and full of tons of information.

Thursday night into Friday morning the wee one had more desats then usual but he was kicked down to 1/2 liter so I guess in away it is to be expected as he gets used to the lower amount and his body needing to work a little harder. His o2 needs were around 30% most of the night. Nurse Denise was abe to kick him down to 29% in the morning.

Nurse Denise noticed that he sounded plugged up so she suctioned his nose and got it cleaned out. So that helped and he didn’t have any desats in the am so she thinks that is probably why he had some overnight. Just working harder in general due to the 1/2 liter but also being slightly plugged up made it even harder for his lungs to do their jobs.

He took 28 mls by bottle at 12midnight and then his 3am feed he took 38 mls. Then at his 6am he must have been hungry as he took the whole bottle orally. Go baby go:)

Nurse Denise mentioned he was bumped up to 58mls a bottle on 10/18. I had no idea and no one told me when I asked prior about changes so that kind of ticks me off. I didn’t really expect the doc who has been rouding at Ridges hasn’t been good at calling about anything. She also noted from notes, etc I guess most of desats are after feeds.

At night when we ewent to visit they were doing his measurements and Nurse Kim asked me to help a bit which was nice.

He was 7.7 pounds

18 inches around for his head

20 inches long

I need to double check on his chart by his bedside as I didn’t write down while at the hospital what the exact measurements were.

The end of the visit was awesome as the brothers finally got to meet sort of…Nurse Kim said to knock on the window and she would bring him to the window to see his brother. It was awesome:) i can’t wait till they meet IN PERSON.

Yesterday Nurse Annie was there and said he was doing good with feeds. Overnight it was pretty much the same as the night before 30 mls on one feed and 28 on other. He was fairly wipped over so they just did the ng tube at 9am.

Late in the afternoon the doctor called and let us know that she thought he was ready to start cue based feedings as he took 75% of his feeds orally on Friday. The peanut was on cue based feeds for his last week or so when he was in the NICU so we have experience with that which is nice. For the wee one he needs to get 205 mls in every 12 hours.

We also discussed 02 and when he goes home. She was talking about how he will probably need it at home and training we would have to go through. The idea in general makes me nervous but I know with training it should hopefully go well. I do worry about the hubby at home alone with him, the peanut and the cats (I mention the cats as I worry one of them may try and chew something associated with the 02). I know the husband worries about it as well. We shall see how it all plays out.

When I called last night he was doing great with the cue based feeds. he took 55 ml at 7:45 and 60 at 5:30. they had officially started the cue based feedings at 4 so not to shabby.

This morning he had Nurse Annie again and she started off by letting me know how he scared her but in the end it was all good. He was eating quite well this morning but got to good and some desats and was spitting up, chocking, etc. He needed some extra 02 during those times as he was struggling to breath. She was like he really scared me…and I thought you are scaring me now.

In the end he is still working on getting the whole suck, swallow breath thing down and was struggling a lot this morning.

Otherwise doing well which is always nice to hear. I guess Annie cuddled him a lot after the issues so that was nice to hear. I really like Nurse Annie but I think it helps that she knows us from the peanut’s stay and her daughter played sports with my sister in law. So she very loosly knows the family too.

and to end it I just go off the phone with the doctor who we missed early as she was hung up at Southdale I believe.

We had a talk about his issues this morning and it was most reflux related and that he needs to be paced. So we are going make some arrangements with OT to teach us how to feed him with pacing as we didn’t need to do that with the peanut.

She did say despite the issues this morning his o2 needs have been around room air/21%-23% which is a huge difference from the past few days which he was around 30%. The doctor believes it si due to the daily lasik along with his other duiretic.

The doctor was happy with his growth. He is 21.5 inches long and puts him at the 80% for his age. Shocker my child is long:)

His head is in the 90% which is good as when he was born I guess his head a bit larger then they like to see for his gestation age. News to me really but I am glad it is where it should be. She said that it shows he has good brain growth. With the lasik she is happy with where his weight is at as well.

So long story short, he’s doing overall really well with eating and growing but those lungs are still having some issues but slowly doing better.

Well I should close this out and run back up to the NICU.

Down | Dear Baby P The Sequel

Addition to the previous post;

Looks like the reflux could be a bug issue. He had another spell of needing a major kick of o2. Nurse Annie felt so bad having to tell me about.

Poor wee one is just spent.

He?s getting tube fed at 6:30

His weight is down tonight to 7 pds 5 ounces

What was that about weaning? | Dear Baby P The Sequel
Let’s see before I get into discussing the weaning or lack there of it, how about the typical run down of how things are going in the wee one’s world.

Yesterday morning when i called Nurse Angela said he had a good night. He took 100 mls at 4am and then only 60 mls at 7:30am.

Apparently he has starting spitting up a lot (which reminds me I forgot to ask the doctor about that last night, note to self: ask doctor today when we got see him). The wee did not really have any desaturations with his med bottles which is good considering that was a trouble spot for him.

He is still doing great without the o2 so go boy go!

Later on in the day Dr Johnson called to give me an update on rounds. Basically everything I was told was happening about weaning medication is now NOT happening which after he explained it I understand why.

They feel like they don’t want to push him to much namely after weaning the o2 so they want to keep him on his meds and let him *grow out of them*. The doctor thinks if we pull the meds after the o2 it may set him back so I understand what he is saying.

Dr. Johnson also said he spoke with the Ped we choose for the wee one when he is released. It is the same doctor that the peanut sees so I am happy he is willing take on the wee one as well. This ped has a lot of experience with preemies. He is going to be rounding at Ridges next week thus he will check in on him and hopefully take over the care of him from the Neos as well. Dr. Johnson said that after the sleep study on Sunday night (yeah that finally got rescheduled) they will see what the outcome of that is and if he passes it then they won’t make any changes for him and transfer care.

If all goes well with the study on Sunday night into Monday night morning and he passes it then it really comes down to a little more time eating and the hubby and I feeling comfortable feeding him then he can get his get out of the NICU card and be sprung for good! (well hopefully for good).

So here is to hoping all goes well with the study. From what I have been told by a few of the nurses it’s fairly hard to pass so we will see and you know if he doesn’t pass then we will deal with it. They usually restest like 5-7 days later so it’s not like we would have wait another month or something for him to retest.

That was pretty much it from the doctor front.

Our Friday night visit was a little eventful as he got a roomate and someone put his crib under the heat vent and next to the window. Normally it wouldn’t be a big deal I guess but about a month ago his crib was in that spot and the nurses thought he was getting a fever, etc as his temps were so high but confused as he was not showing signs of being sick. So Nurse Denise on my birthday (10-6) put two and two together and realized due to him running warm just in general, he should not be put in that spot. So she stuck a note on his crib sayings: do not put me under the heat vent or near the window as I am a warm baby.

Needless to say I asked a nurse about it as Nurse Angela was at dinner. This nurse said oh it’s not a problem being the window will cool him off from the heat vent. I was like um another nurse put his note on his crib almost a month ago. She didn’t say anything and then walked out. Being his nurse was on dinner I went out to see the hubby and peanut for a few. Then the hubby went into see him and talked to his nurse as she was done with dinner. I wasn’t privy to the conversation but long story short he switched spots in this room with the new roommate.

Well I guess it’s time to call and make a game plan for today’s visit as we are going to get some more feeding practice in.

Life After The NICU | Dear Baby P The Sequel

Over 3 months later, we can finally get to being a family and establish some sort of normal.

While we adjust I can’t help but think about how different life after the NICU is now compared to our first go around.

For the most part our normal revolves around that chart in the picture. Feeding and meds are on a schedule. With his pacing issues, feeding can take some time. His reflux makes it challenging as well.

With the wee one’s feeding schedule there has been some sleep but we are back to the days of watching Law and Order in the wee hours of the morning. I have noticed USA and TNT don’t show it as much that early like they used to.

He eats at 2am, 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm and 11pm or around those times so they go with this med times. Every feeding except 7pm has meds with it.

Some if his feeds need to be fortified as well for extra calories and things he needs.

He is going to need a lot of flow up with the Peds for awhile. From now till they say otherwise he needs to be seen weekly. He is also going to be seen by an eye doctor for follow up for ROP. Then in a few months follow up appointments with a urologist and a cardiologist.

So busy busy will be life. We are rolling with it.

Other aspects of life after the NICU are slowly falling into place.

The peanut seems to like his brother but we are working on the concept of gentle. Poor thing has had his eyes poked a few to many times.

Naps with the two in the same room is tricky.

With it being RSV season running errands will be either myself or the hubby.

Outside of that life is good having the wee one home

World Prematurity Day/Prematurity Awareness Month

World Prematurity Day/Prematurity Awareness Month | Dear Baby P The Sequel

Today is World Prematurity Day and Novermber is prematurity awareness month. A lot preemie place/people I know with preemies have been posting various things about prematurity. With the wee one recently getting home and the family adjusting to life with him home I haven’t had a lot of time to do much in support of it.

Tonight I am just going to repost the birth story of the wee one at 26 weeks and 3 days. Even after after a late term preemie at 34 weeks and 1 day nothing really prepared me for the birth of Sam.

Welcome to the world little one | Dear Baby P The Sequel

Baby P The Sequel’s Birth story. (please excuse any typos, etc as I wrote this fairly late last night)

It’s a bit long, tried not to be graphic about it, but it’s not the happiest read but at least in the end there was happiness in the form of a beautiful little boy.

As the saying goes every pregnancy is different….

And this one fits the old saying and was totally different from my first.

Every labor is different too I would imagine because the birth of Baby P2 was nothing like the birth of Baby P. It all started on Saturday July 28th waking up with bleeding issues and talking to the on call OB who suggested I go to Fairview Ridges.

We went and ended up getting admitted for observation even though after some exams and an ultrasound they couldn’t pin point the case of the bleeding.

The bleeding stopped on Sunday and I was sent home.

On Monday I still had no issues so I went along with my day and went to my OB appointment. She had no idea either as to the source of the bleeding but thought maybe the cerclage was getting pulled a bit by rather light contractions.

Tuesday morning I woke up and knew something was not right as the bleeding had returned and it was a lot heavier.

Back to the hospital we went for more exams, ultrasounds, etc…

Due to how far along I was it was decided if I went into labor it would be best to go to the University of MN. So I was transferred there later in the afternoon by ambulance.

After being admitted into the hospital I had a lot of labs drawn and then exams were scheduled for the next morning.

On Wednesday morning I was told that it wasn’t a placenta abruption as they initially thought because of how the labs turned out. At that point they ran through other things they thought it was but after some exams and labs decided it wasn’t and the docs were puzzled. Cue me feeling like I should be on an episode of House.

Then I had an ultrasound, which looked to be promising as the tech said Sam was measuring 29 weeks and a few days. She even said he was weighing 3 pounds 2 oz. everything about him looked great but she did notice some bight spots on the ultrasound which I guess bright equals blood.

Eventually they wanted to do another exam to check and see if the cerclage was tearing. Being it had been a rather rough couple of days needless to say the girly parts were sensitive and hard to examine.

So they gave me some pain meds to sort of knock me out while they did the exam.

I wasn’t told right away what the decision was and was taken back to my room. I asked if I could order some food finally as I hadn’t eaten all day because they didn’t know if any of the exams would require me to be knocked out. The nurse said yes I could eat according to the doctor. I ordered up some food and just after I hung up the phone the nurse came flying back in and told me I couldn’t eat and I was getting my cerclage taken out.

Shortly after that I was greeted by the doctor’s explaining that after all the exams from both hospitals, labs, ultrasounds, etc it was indeed a placenta abruption and I needed to get the cerclage taken out.

So I was off to the OR to get it taken out.

Once I was awake I was told that I was dilated to 4 and we needed to go into labor.

So we were off the labor and delivery floor.

Being my platelets were rather low they didn’t want to do a C Section and didn’t feel like it would be a safe option.

So they started me on the meds to help reduce the risk of cp in the baby and gave me some meds to increase contractions.

They came hard and fast and extremely painful but I wasn’t really dilating more.

So they kept increasing the dosage.

They attempted to break my water but couldn’t and said we should wait till it breaks on its own. Finally it did and then the pushing began and the room got crowded with doctors, nurses and NICU staff ready to go as soon as Sam made his appearance.

He finally arrived at 11:02pm in a fast and furious push where I guess I kicked the doctor. Totally didn’t realize I kicked her….

While the doctors dealt with him, the husband popped over to make sure Baby P2 was o.k. while he was being checked out by the NICU staff.

He was off to the NICU and I was exhausted and just rather spent on the events of the previous few days and mainly the whole day that just ended with the birth of Baby P2. I had no idea when I woke up that morning he was going to be born. The hubby had no idea when he was popping by the hospital to see me that he would spend basically all day there keeping me sane and welcoming his son into the world.

Parent Mentor | Dear Baby P The Sequel

So this is the random about mom post.

Recently a saw a group on Facebook, Project Sweet Peas, mentioning a new program they are starting. It’s a parent mentor program where you get paired up with parents currently in the NICU.

I signed up and got the confirmation today after agreeing to their terms.

Soon I should hear about the family I am getting paired up with.

I hope I can do well at this. I feel like I have a good ear and after having two totally different NICU stays I feel like maybe I help a family where I wish we had with the both of the boys.

With the wee one’s stay I had more help with a group of ladies on fb and also finding blogs like Ain’t No Roller Coaster, etc. but still felt a bit lost at times.

The Upcoming Week | Dear Baby P The Sequel

know ti’s Saturday and still *this* week and I don’t want to wish the weekend away but I am mentally thinking about what is coming up this coming week.

Monday afternoon:Monday afternoon will be out first offically visit with EI and OT. I mean they came out before to talk to us but this time they are going to work with the wee one. I am kind of excited to see what they do and whatnot.

Wednesday morning:Wednesday morning he has his what used to be weekly checkups but now I guess are every other week. Here’s to hoping it goes smoothly unlike the last one. I think it should as overall I think the wee one is doing well. I am leaning to think he is going through a growth spurt as he is sleeping better and sleeping a lot. He is also out of his preemie clothes and some of the new born stuff seems to be getting bit snug on him in the feet. I believe he is getting longer. Yeah the boy is going to be tall I think. With him out of his preemie clothes I am donating those to the NICU. i wasn’t sure if Ridges takes some of the really small stuff so I may see if the U will take anything that Ridges doesn’t. I imagine the U would take the smaller stuff as they care for the real little ones.

Outside of those two days nothing else happening this coming week there really isn’t any other appointments.

Well mom has an appointment but with work I may reschedule yet again. It is an appointment to see if i *actually* have the bleeding disorder i was told I had years ago. Part of me is curios but the other part of me really doesn’t care as we are not having more kids so it’s really a non issue for the most part

Over 4 hours at the clinic | Dear Baby P The Sequel

Needless to say that was not how I imagined my Wednesday to go today. The thought was sleep in a tad, kiss the peanut and the sweetie goodbye as the wee one and I went off for his now every other week checkup. Then get the all clear and off to work I would go finding conflicts for attorneys to clear.

In reality the morning went a bit like this…

We got to the clinic and they did his measurements and weight.

The good news of the appointment is the wee one is 12 pounds. Yes folks 12 pounds! Talk about chunky monkey. Seeing him at this weight so is crazy and I tried to remember him at the little 2 pounds 12 ounces when he was born. He is 22 inches long so yeah he’s getting tall!

After all of that then the doctor came into check in on the wee one. The doctor looked at him and asked if I had any questions. I mentioned that his wheezing seemed to be getting worse. The doctor noted that it was and then said his breathing was really bad and labored. Then started talking about the possiblity of him needing to be admitted to the hospital but wanted to run some tests first.

Thankfully his o2 levels came back at 100%, his white blood cells looked good and his RSV test came back negative. So thank goodness for all of that. He was also given a nebulizer treatment.

The downside is right now we are sitting at this could be something viral but not sure where he got something viral from as he nor the peanut goes to daycare and they don’t really get out of the house. The doc said it would have been something that I caught at work and as an adult I am not feeling it but passed it off on him.

Yeah they don’t know…

So the plan of action started as steriods and neb treatments till Saturday and then recheck on Saturday. If things didn’t seem improved he would be admitted into the hospital.

After a bit of consulting between Ped and neonatogists the plan now is meds and neb treatments till tomorrow. Then he goes back in tomorrow. If things don’t seem improved they will try and figure out what’s wrong and possibly still admit him into the hospital.

I hate having that hospital possibility hanging over our head.

I hate only knowing right now it could be something viral but yet I am thankful it is possibly nothing serious.

Outside of that he know wants us to bring him to a lung doctor for some follow ups along with the cardiologist and urologist.

We will also be using the home health care nurse through the County more. I know he meant well but it really rubbed me the wrong when he said that we should have been using her more as a pair of expert eyes. When we first had her out all of us felt weekly visits, etc weren’t really needed at that point becuase he wasn’t really have any major issues. While waiting for all the tests to come back I did give her a call and made her aware of the wee one’s health situation. So now we are trying to figure out a game plan for her to come out. After tomorrow we will finalize things and she is going to be gone for the holidays till Januray 6th.

So all in all we will see and we have to wait and see if it is indeed something viral or if its more and there is a chance sad chance of spending the holidays in the hospital.
