Reality in Full Color!

April 27 2010

Welcome to the world Jade! It's been a long almost three weeks since your timely arrival and i have to admit, I'm tired and sore but couldn't be happier! Daddy played hooky from work today since they didn't give him sick time while we were in the hospital, and he is spending the day with us for a three day weekend!!! Right now you are curled up on his chest past out fast asleep and I am enjoying some 'me' time. Figured now was a good a time as any to start the next journal for you. well, you mangled my sacroiliac joint, I pulled all the muscles in my shoulder and twisted the muscles in my neck getting you here, but you were worth it and came out so fast i can't really complain, not that it stopped me that first week. the chiro got mommy all fixed up and with a good bra permanently attached we are back to normal, off the advil and tylenol and working on getting some semblance of a schedule figured out. so far you seem to have a weird sense of timing, it seems like you sleep all day but when i wrote it out to see, you do these weird 3 hours up equals three hours down, one hour up equals one hour down, so i guess i can use that, however long you sleep for, expect to have you up for that long. it's only the midnight (2:30am today) awakes that are really hard on me right now, i'm very much a day person and my poor mommy brain isn't grasping that it's possible be awake and coherent when it's still dark out! we'll get it figured out eventually! took you out for your first mall and bus trip with just me yest. very proud of myself as we managed two stores, booked your 2mon shots, got groceries and made it home without any issues!! it helps that you sleep like a rock in your carseat! just to have it somewhere safe here is a list of your firsts so far, remember that you are only 2weeks and 4 days at this point!
April 9 - your birthday!!
April 10 - went to grandad's to show you off then went home!
April 13 - lost your cord
April 14 - 1st bus ride (you slept the whole time!)
- first manicure (had to file cause we're not supposed to clip right away due to skin still all the way across nails)
April 21 - first chiropractic adjustment, your right side of neck was out a little, doc just did a little massage to fix and you started sleeping better and holding your neck better!
April 21 - 2 week check up with gp, back up to birth weight and doing great!
April 24 - 1st deep bath/swimming, you smiled and kicked and splashed while holding daddy's hand and looking at him (i was in the bath holding you)
April 25 - went to granddad's for native feast to honour late grandparents, tons of ppl, lots of noise, beautiful day out. got lots of fresh air and slept through the whole thing, we were there for 5 hours!
April 26 - i took you out by myself for the first time, we both did great!
April 26 - 1st shower, had another bath and you pooped in the tub so we had to shower off after, you seemed to like it more than the bath!

love you so much Jade, thank you for being you!

wow what a day, yest was great and last night was even better, hoping for a repeat! yest started with daddy taking you for a few hours so i could sleep, he did great, i didn't hear you once and he let me stay asleep until i woke up on my own! then we played all day, slept in the afternoon and by 7pm you were up for a bit and by 9:30pm you were out like a light. you let me sleep till 2:30am, fed for half hour and went back to sleep and stayed asleep till 6am!! needless to say mommy is much more patient and fun when she's had some sleep, lol! today has been a bit of a roller coaster, you are still doing the growth spurt thing (you're huge all of a sudden! size wise that is, daddy says you grew a whole finger, arms and legs are one whole finger width longer now!) so you fed and fussed most of the afternoon before passing out. it took three runs at the boob before you did though, you'd feed and fall asleep, fall off and then wake up and feed some more. daddy is soo proud of my patience with you and tells me lots that i am being a great mom and how happy he is, it really makes me feel better and helps me with continuing the level of patience when you fuss all day. Daddy didn't have a very nice mommy so he gets a little concerned sometimes about whether we did the right thing (new daddy jitters, even he says this) but then he sees you and i together and his heart melts and it's all good again! so far you are doing great, you love to go for long walks and bus rides in your car seat and stroller and will often sleep the whole time we are out as long as you are in the car seat! well it seems that life is settling into something resembling sanity, i think! day by day you seem to change your schedule and keep us guessing so we are just trying to take things one day at a time, however i am happy to report that you slept all night in your own bed/crib last night so hopefully mommy has figured out how to teach you the difference between day and night, night being sleep time!
well, it about time to check on you and think about bath and bed. Love you lots, mom!

OMG!!! okay so i would love to figure out what exactly i'm doing but last night was the second night in a row that you slept through the night!!!!! you didn't wake up till 4:15am after going down at 9:15pm! then you fed and you are asleep again right now! sort of thinking it's just from the growth spurt but would love to see you do this more often for at least a little while. you are three weeks old today and i couldn't be happier with you. yes you get really fussy and cranky and you have gas and cry in the evening but i love you and i can persevere through this phase knowing that it does get better! daddy is having a bit of a frustrating time with the crying, but that is nothing new, he hates to hear babies cry, however he is doing really great with dealing with it. he is learning to let mommy deal and take some 'me time' when he needs to as well! today might be a little different as he has been home for three days. tuesday he took a 'sick day' to spend the day with us and go with us to a psychiatry appt for mommy, so we will see how he deals with crying fuss pot after a day of dealing with the dingbats at work! here's to a great three weeks and many more to come! love you lots, mom!

so it's been a little bit and i thought it was time for an update! you are doing great so far, mommy wants to pull her hair out from time to time, but you're worth it! big fusses right now are feeding and sleeping, you feed all day long, fuss till 10 pm and then sleep till noon the next day (okay there are feeding breaks in there but we co sleep after daddy leaves and you free feed!) while i'm not complaining about the sleep i'm getting (thank you for this!) it's the fact that all morning i'm wanting to sleep and all afternoon and evening i'm feeding you, we are going to get you weighed and measured today, hopefully seeing just how much you've grown will help with my mentality when it comes to you feeding all time!
on to better topics, you are rolling over already, mostly side to back, but you have done back to side and can squirm yourself in a circle. i get the odd ooh or aah or whine, mainly just your little 'ah ha' when you are crying and we ask you something! you love your hands and have since day one...
well that's you, i'll be back another time!
love always, mom!

ah a little break in the day! it is early and as per your routine lately you are asleep! still working on figuring out a schedule but it's getting there. in bed by 10pm and up by 4-5am with maybe a feeding around 2:30am. then you sleep again most of the morning and give mommy some sort of break! it's a little hard right now though as you are a constant eater! it seems like you are on the boob all day long and when you aren't you are fussy or crying that you want to be. i am working on getting you to stay awake and eating while you are on the boob as you tend to fall asleep after 5min, we are working on that too! you are growing great, on the 10th you measured in at 7lbs 12oz and 21 1/4 inches, that's up from 7lbs and 19 1/2 inches at your 12 day appt!! keep growing girl! daddy is getting immune to your fussy cry and only really has a hard time with your freak out cry, he is such a great daddy though and takes such good care of both of us!
had a great day yest, you weren't too fussy and daddy gave me an hour of 'me' time! i went into the bathroom, turned the music on, closed the door and took care of me for a change. showered and shaved my legs and tended to my feet and just relaxed for a bit, enjoyed a nice long hot shower, it was wonderful!
you are learning lots too, you can roll over, not well but you do! you wave your arms when i wave and say hi, you ooh and aaah and whine and hum, and OMG you can hold your head up and look around already!! you are working on sitting up, when you are supported we can feel the muscles in your back and you can lean forward without curling into a ball instantly now! you are very attentive to sounds and movement and you definitely know your mommy! i walk into a room and your eyes are glued to me! you still seem to have a bit of an upset tummy but rarely need the gripe water now, it's mainly when you get all upset that it really acts up and you spit up through your nose. that usually calms you down! i am hoping that you learn to settle down soon, we are working on that as well, calm is good, it hurts less!
well you are getting so big and smart and i am so proud of you every day, even when you drive me nuts! keep up the great work kiddo! love always, mom!

alright that's it, time to lay down the law around here! my boobies are my boobies and are on loan to you little one! you still need to share and not hog them all day long. so today we are going to start watching the time, and going to a three hour schedule, you cannot possibly be hungry all the time unless you are not feeding properly and that would happen because i let you free feed and fall asleep and so you only eat for 5 min at a time. well in the morning you are well rested and haven't eaten in hours and you do great, awake and eating for 15-45min like you should be, so we are going to try and repeat this all day today. so far so good, daddy has you and as long as mommy is not within range you are doing great, you ate for 45min while i pumped the other boob and that started 1 hour 45 min ago and so far so good! i will let you know how this goes over the next couple days (or in a couple days as daddy goes back to work tom and we will be on our own most of the day) i am hoping that this will help settle your tummy and stop the constant crying in the afternoon as that is the only time you seem to be freaking out.
on a happy note, you seem to have figured out that night time is sleep time! you have gone almost a whole week going down between 9:30 and 10 pm and sleeping till 4 am!! i know that's a long time to go without food or anything but i know you are not starving! and we both seem to have a much better morning! love always, mom!

so it's been a good two days, YOU SMILED AND LAUGHED!!! yest i was making the 'grrr' face and noise at you and you laughed at me! and the best part, daddy was right there and saw, now just remember that you have to save your first steps for when daddy is home and watching! you did it a couple times, and haven't laughed since, but you smile a lot more now! i love it and can't wait to see what you do next. then today we went out for bread and you were fussy so i walked and we ended up at the library. you have your own card now (it's bright green and says 'Use at the first sign of boredom' and for signing you up you were given your own tote bag and a board book that i got to pick out, since they are all brand new i got you 'goodnight moon' they also gave me a booklet with a bunch of little rhymes and stuff so i have no excuse for forgetting the words to itsy bitsy spider or any of those rhymes! the library also does 'laptime' for babies but none of the local branches do it, so maybe some day if we are up for a bit of a bus ride!
OOOH and daddy let mommy buy something for both of us. there's this thing called a moby wrap, well we couldn't really afford it but for half the price i bought enough fabric to make two and OMG it's the best! you love it, i love it, even daddy thinks it's pretty cool! and i even let you pick out the colour. i wanted blue so i showed you one shade that i liked and you made this icky face and turned your head away, then i showed you a different one that i liked and you smiled so that's what i got. i also got these iron on decals so that i know where the middle is (it's 15 feet of fabric, it helps to have a quick reference!)
this is it all finished! i am getting really good at wrapping and getting you in and out, now i just need to learn some of the other wraps, like the feeding wrap!
the chiropractor finally let us know what the price was for you, they are soo nice, all of your visits (once a week) until june 1 are free (happy birthday Jade) and then it's only $15 so totally manageable!
well that's it for now, love you always, mom!

hello my little one! well it's been one of those weeks. daddy got snipped on tues, and is doing well. you are growing like a weed and life is good! daddy's mom died this morning. you never got the chance to see her, she made it clear that she was not happy with me, and she was very disappointed that we had you. but she was not a very nice woman to anyone. she died of cancer, just so you know that it is in the family. on a different note, daddy has been home all week and it has been wonderful! he may take some more time off for bereavement leave but we are waiting till he talks to a boss. it is beautiful and sunny today and you are not all together miserable! just a little tired. i am so happy that you are still sleeping through the night and i am quite enjoying the extra three hours in the morning that you sleep after you have had some food. well that would be you looking for me! daddy is letting me know that it's time to go! love always, mom!

all right my little booby monster, i have heard and responded, you are ready for food! all week you have been a pest for the boob and then once you've had some you start chewing on my nipple. you suck things in with your tongue, you eye us every time we eat and chew and pound your fists, you never seem to get full and fall asleep after 1/2 hour then eat more (growth spurt seemed to be over). so today we tried a little rice cereal with breast milk (i know a lot of ppl will frown at me but you are soooo ready for this) 1 tbsp worth, you couldn't get enough, fast enough! then got mad because it was all gone! you had booby after to finish you off and you have been fine! the only spit up has been after you were upset (you still hate tummy time!) and it was the same as it has always been, just spit up not puke. every thing seems to be fine with the only difference that you are happier! we are going to give it a week of supplementing your afternoon feed with some cereal and see how you do and if all is well then we are going to proceed as if you were 4 months as far as feeding goes. will keep you posted!

It's almost my birthday! and you are still the best present i could have ever asked for! you are sweet and smart and beautiful and just perfect! about three days ago you discovered your feet, your favourite thing when you are really in a goofy mood is to show mommy how you can eat your own toes now, up until then you just thought it was really funny when i ate them! you have been eating about 1 tbsp of rice cereal for almost two weeks now and you love it, so today mommy will be introducing carrots (always mixed with breast milk pumped that day to make sure that any allergies are new) and we are going to see how you do and maybe add a cereal for supper (so far it's been around lunch) since you are getting hungrier and hungrier and have started occasionally waking up around 2 or 3 in the morning, you have been sleeping 6-9 hours a night for weeks and weeks, but you wake up hungry again even though you feed the same as any other night. i will try to remember to write how you do in a couple days. we were going to try sweet potato first but the veggie store was closed and i had to get carrots from the little store across the street and they don't sell that kind of stuff. in 1 or two weeks we will try you on either sweet potato or maybe a fruit, will have to see how things are going at the time. well lots to do while you nap a little this morning. love you always, mom!

you are asleep and i thought i would take the time to post a little update. carrots went well, not so much when mommy eats carrot cake with pineapple and has asparagus for dinner though, you are a little bunged up and have really stinky farts (mommy to though) so we will stick with cereal and booby for a bit longer. you do great with cereal though! i have found that drinking a cup of raspberry tea at bedtime really helps with the last feeding before you go to sleep, after a few sips you get a big let down and fall deep asleep (like you did before the last growth spurt!) plus mixed with a little french vanilla creamer tastes sooo good! you are sitting up so well now, you like to sit between mommy's knees and watch me type on the computer, or watch tv or just bounce around on my big exercise ball! we went swimming last week twice! you did awesome, the first day it was a bit of an adjustment from the tub but you did really well, daddy and i took turns warming up in the hot tub then holding you close to warm you up with our body heat, we played in the pool for 1/2 an hour. then the next day you did so well you were floating on your stomach holding your head up with mommy just supporting your chest and you were kicking your legs!!! first the frog kick then a straight leg swimmers kick, you have been doing this in the tub ever since! i am so proud! we signed you up for lessons for aug 16, it's a parent and tot class, starfish and duck for two weeks, i can't wait! we will have pics soon as mommy bought a disposable waterproof camera so next time we go we can start taking pictures to share with everyone! well it's been a long day and you tend to wake up when daddy gets up early for work (otherwise you sleep in) so i should go. love you always, mom!

pool is still going great! aunty robin took us to a different pool last week, the water was warm and they had a river in it! we put you in the spring float for infants and floated around the river and then into the little pool for some swimming for an hour!

we didn't get any good pics on this camera of you floating with mommy only holding your chest but there might be some on the disposable that i bought, just need to finish it off, develop it and then scan them in, wow that's a lot of work now that we have a digital! in the tub you are getting really good, you splash and if it's just the right depth you crawl! won't be long now until you are crawling on the floor! you roll over from back to front like a champ now and do full push ups as well as mini's and supermans' you seem to be having issues with rolling back the other way, but like everything else i know you will get it when you are ready, in the meantime mommy doesn't mind assisting. food is back to just cereal, we tried apples and that didn't work so well either so we stick with rice cereal. you can eat Mum-Mum baby rusks, we have banana and veg. you like them in your nibbler, also mommy crushes a couple with a rolling pin to add flavour to your cereal, they are made with rice too so there is very little difference in ingredients, you seem to like it and it likes you too. teething is trucking along as usual, lots of slobber, diarrhea, spitting up, low grade fever and chewing on everything and anything that you can get in your mouth! i can't wait till they break the surface so we can move on to something else! you found your voice the other day, talking away telling mommy stories! and you have the sweetest voice when you want too, and the best squeally laugh i've heard yet! even your cry isn't that bad, most ppl go 'aww' and think that you are just a little fussy until they see your face, then they can't believe that you are that upset and being that quiet! there are rare times when you can pierce the eardrums of any adult within a 10 block radius, but that is very rare and only for very good reasons, such as you are in major pain or frustrated and tired beyond anything that should be legal and stuck on your tummy (that combo only). daddy and i love you more and more every day and look forward to each new milestone and progress that you make, i try to tell you everyday how proud i am of you and how much i love you! it's not hard to remember! you can almost sit up all by your self, you need help getting to the sitting position but once there only the slightest of support is needed to stay there! you are standing so well, you often throughout the day demand to stand for long periods of time! we are watching how much weight you are allowed to put on you legs though as we don't want issues down the road. this works well with you being so tiny, the excersaucer is just the right height to let you stand but still be totally supported, you will play in that for an hour if i let you! you turn all around playing with each of the toys in turn. the cow trips you right out though! it's funny to watch you just stare at it with this bewildered look! you also love your tigger jumper

also adjusted so that you can stand but there is limited pressure available for you, you will dance and turn and bounce in that for an hour too! it's a great way for you to have fun and mommy to do laundry, you hang in the bedroom door and mommy just folds clothes on the bed with the music on for dancing!
mommy has decided that it's time to get out and socialize us both, i signed up with two mommy groups in the city, one does walks and one does outings, so thursday we are going for a walk and friday we are going to go wading at the legislature grounds and mingle with other moms and their kids. the walking group is all one year and younger, so lots of lo's for you to play with, the other group is newborn to age ten! will have to keep you posted on how those go. well this has turned into quite the long entry, you are napping and laundry is in so i can't (otherwise mommy naps too!) love you always, mom!

almost 4 months old and i still can't believe it! you are so little and at the same time act so big that sometimes it's hard to fathom just how young you are. the other day you tried to walk. i was playing on the floor with you and we have been working on sitting up and playing and all of a sudden you kicked your legs out to stand, this is nothing really new, you've been doing since just a few weeks old, but then you started to move your hips and legs and you ended up walking from the blanket to the couch (you were after daddy!) which is about 4 feet away. mommy was holding you up and making sure that you didn't get to put too much pressure on your legs and knees as usual but you wanted to go and there was no stopping you (i tried, picked you up and you freaked out at me!) also you are getting really good at mimicking sounds, daddy and i say i love you lots around the house, to you and to each other, a couple of days ago you started mimicking it back to daddy! i got it sort of on video, much like the walking, by the time we got the camera you were more interested in something else, but it almost sounds like you tell daddy 'love you too' in this frustrated way (think teenager who's parents won't stop talking!)!! teething is moving along as per usual, cranky, annoying, painful, the usual stuff. waiting *cough* patiently for some of them to finally break through and give you some relief. there are a few trying, lately it has been the bottom back left again (you were born with four very distinct white buds top and bottom halfway back) i have a chart from the nurse that says when each should come in, i am adding it to the baby book and i'm going to mark on it when each actually come in, same with the back of it that shows falling out.
you had your 4 month shots on wed., what a fiasco, i wanted to deck the nurse that did it this time, but i held my own, was polite and didn't cause a scene but still got my way! first off she didn't want me to breast feed you while doing it, she claimed i can't get a good enough hold on your leg. um, i find it's a better hold because i'm not grabbing your leg i'm holding it and using my body to assist. so as she was babbling on about why she didn't like it i took out the boob and popped you on, there lady tell my daughter she has to get off so you can poke her with a needle! you did really well, she tried to distract you with shiny flashy things which annoyed me, back off lady and let me comfort my child. then she mentioned about the chicken pox and that i should be prepared to spread them out because it's 4 shots that time (um you still have others before then) and i mentioned that we don't want to do that one just yet. she started telling me about infant mortality rates and how awful it is and basically tried to scare me into changing my mind. HA i say, you have to try a lot harder than that to scare this momma! after all was said and done, you did great, we got out of there without any extra hair loss and i have your new measurements
height/length: 24 1/4 inches
weight: 11.02 lbs (5kg)
head: 39.6 cm (15.59 inches)
not bad at all, you are still staying right on your pattern (the chart actually has these lines that show good growth and you are right on a dark line and follow it consistently!) the nurse tried to tell me that i need to watch your growth as a decline could be rapid and severe but you seem healthy for now, oh and in the same breathe she 'scolded' me for giving you rice cereal so early! um the extra calories seem to be doing a good job, and you still get lots of bm, right now you are up to maybe 2 or 3 tbsp of mix (rice cereal with bm) so it's not like i'm changing out your food, just giving you a little something so you will stop screaming at me when i try to eat supper! well that's about it for today, swimming lessons start in a week and i can't wait! mommy groups are going well (i really like one of them!) night night, love always, mom!

*sigh* what a week! things are going really well. you swim like a fishy!!! monday was the first day of swimming lessons. it was supposed to be one week of starfish then one week of duck. it turns out that starfish is 4-18months introduction to the water. then duck 18-30 months and you learn floats, using floatation devices (boards and jackets) to help float and blowing bubbles and such. there is only one other kid/mom in the class and you both have experience in the pool so the instructor has had you both working on floats, boards, kick your toys away then go get them, games and songs and going down the slide and all of that is supposed to be way outside your age group! the other kid is 19 months. the thought is that he has adapted the course to the students and you are both doing really well. you fuss most days about half way through but you finish the class and are all giggles and grins before and after and when we talk about it at home, you love showing daddy the games you play when you have your bath later in the day, and the other mom doesn't mind your fusses and her boy (Kinder) asks for 'baby' in the morning when he asks for 'swim' thought that was pretty cute! so we have one more week of that and then next year we will probably repeat this class, new instructor, new way of looking at the world and it's more about the pool than the lessons at this point in your life! the next level is supposed to be for 30-36 months and learn
1 Practise kicking on front using a floating object for support.
2 Learn to jump into chest-deep water safely – after getting permission from a parent or Instructor.
3 Explore under the water by holding his or her breath and blowing bubbles underwater – one of the first steps in learning to swim.
4 Begin learning the basics of the front swim.
5 Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water.
hmm well you are already doing 1, 2, 3 (sort of, blow bubbles and dunk under water) and the rest are just happening!
on other points, your talking is getting quite verbal, babbling up a storm, b and g and m are there now along with a, e, i, o, ooo. you want to walk soo bad! you love to 'dance' along with the tv show 'so you think you can dance' and will wiggle on my lap for two hours watching all the ppl dancing. i don't like you watching that much tv but it is things that you won't get at home and it's getting you moving and seeing what styles of dance you might want to do. right now you are with daddy petting the cats! learning to be gentle with them! food is good, you now eat oatmeal consistency rice cereal, carrots, sweet potatoes, mum-mum rusks by your self! and *warning bad parent moment* okay the experts say not to do stuff like this but you are very ahead of the game with food so i followed your signs (banging, screaming, chewing and making it quite obvious what you wanted) mommy made pancakes this morning and you smelled it and went from giggles to fuss, then you saw me take a bite and freaked out! so clean pan, no butter or anything and i made you a little pancake, cut it up into finger bites, cooled it off and sat with you in your high chair while you fed yourself 1/4 of a 4inch diameter pancake happy as a clam! no bad reactions yet, you never show issues when i eat it so thinking it's all good, still no teeth so this will not be routine for a while yet, but they 'melt' pretty easy in your mouth and you enjoyed it and mommy got to eat in peace! sort makes sense you have been eating solids for over two months now, from puree to mush to finger foods is the progression. you stand soo well now and are learning to sit better, you seem to want to skip a few steps, we are working with you on these steps so you don't miss out on important things like balance control! you sit in your high chair now, still don't have straps for it because i can't find them and you are too little but the is a big blanket that sits behind you to pad you in the side, legs and back so you sit nicely there now. wow you are doing so much now, teething is still chugging along slowly but surely, you continue to grow and learn and make me sooooo proud everyday. daddy and love you and each other more and deeper everyday and life is darn near perfect (okay there are bad days i won't kid you but the good days totally out way the bad and tempers still remain in check at all times without effort!). love always, mom!

wow it's been a while this time! you have been doing so great and up to so much! still not much on the crawling but you do travel quite a bit in your little belly crawl way! you are starting to reject mommies hands when you walk, even though you still need the extra support! you're favourite past time is playing on the coffee table with the coasters, you stand there and bang and play 'fetch' with us for a long time. you are eating all sorts of foods now, still on the puree style foods but we are working more and more flavours, to date: carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, plums, peaches, pears (although these seemed to make you spit up a bit more the next day so will be waiting a bit more), bananas, apples, and i just bought butternut squash to try in a little bit. you are eating rice cereal with or without banana (powdered) you love it when i mix real fruit into the mix, this morning we had oat cereal and i have a box of wheat and mixed fruit for you to try. next we will be adding the meats, starting with chicken. you are doing great and love to eat, you seem to quite enjoy it when mommy has a 'play' moment and just pours the rest out on the tray of your highchair and lets you feed yourself (you haven't quite figured out how to get it out of your bowls as they have narrow spaces). you can feed yourself the mum-mum rusks without any problems and our sunday ritual (okay not every sunday but it always seems to be on a sunday!) is cartoons and pancakes! you love to just suck on them, not really sure how much of it you're eating but you have fun! yesterday you said your first word! a very clear and intentional Ma-Ma, daddy was holding you while i ate my supper and you had spent most of the day with him and were showing signs of mommy withdrawal! sooo happy that you let daddy hear that the first time, keep that up, with him working that's his biggest regret right now is how many firsts he might miss. we are doing playgroups on wednesday now and having a lot of fun so far. i am really enjoying my momstown group and highly recommend finding a group when you have a baby if you aren't surrounded with new babies and moms already. mommy is doing a biggest loser challenge and having a lot of fun with it, we are both learning about healthier eating and exercise and trying to teach you how to enjoy a healthy lifestyle instead of cramming it down your throat (not that my mom did but sometimes that's what it felt like), learning how to work in the treats so that you still get them and still have fun without wanting to binge. hoping that my doc can get things sorted out with the pcos symptoms and see if that helps with the weight loss, i want more than anything to be healthy and in shape to keep up with you and make you proud that i am your momma (appearance wise that is, i hope you are proud of me regardless!). flights are booked and you are going to get to see your grandma (my mom) at the end of october!!! we are going back to victoria to see aunty fuchsia and grandma for halloween and spend a week visiting. there will be lots of pics and i know we are all excited for the trip! let me see, food, walking, words, happy healthy baby, loving adoring parents, OH YEAH, mommy and daddy went out on a date for our 6 year anniversary on sept 14 and papa watched you for almost two hours!! you did great and only fussed after you woke up from your nap but settled down after 5 min. mommy did great and didn't call home check on you and just enjoyed dinner! okay i called to tell papa we were on our way home but that was more because we were running later than i had said, but he didn't care he was having fun with you and loves the honour of being your first babysitter! not that i feel ready to leave you with others just yet but it was nice to get out, cell phones were all charged and we were only a five minute walk down the road, and you love papa! i entered you in a photo contest for zellers, should know by october 16 if you won, placed or anything. you would be the flyer baby for their jan. sale and get a big resp and all kinds of good stuff. you are such a beautiful baby i had to try for that resp, something daddy and i might not be able to provide for you the was we want so this would be great! okay i think that's it for now. love you always, mom!

so we are all doing pretty great around here. you have one tooth with a second almost ready to stay up, it's broken through but recedes still, today should be the day it stays up. you have already bitten your foot, my boob and my finger. the finger was my own fault i should have known better than to stick my finger in your mouth with banana on it! you certainly love banana! you now eat all kinds of fruits and veggies, and pancakes, and chicken and turkey and hot dog! we have added meats to help with added protein and start you getting larger textures, most of the time i keep the meat separate from the veggies so you can taste it then mix it up to finish off the meal. you love to feed yourself, although only about half of it ends up in your mouth!

good morning my love! cake making is going well, you are doing great, two teeth in (front bottom two) and raring to go for more! doc check up was good, he was so happy with your progress. the only thing we are watching is your belly button, it seems that it hasn't healed all the way yet and if it doesn't it can herniate so over the next six months we hope that finishes otherwise he will have to do something about it. your development is going great, you can feed yourself finger foods now like rice puffs and the other day you discovered that sticky cereal fingers make it easier to grab lots of rice puffs at once! you are currently playing in your 'tent'. at aunty fuchsia's suggestion i wrapped a big sheet around your play gym, put toys inside and clipped the front open. you seem to like it! you are almost crawling! you have the position right now you just need to work on forward momentum! we figure you'll be crawling by this time next week no problem. mommy made venison stew the other night and you loved it so there is now a bunch in the freezer for to go along with all the fruits and veggies that i have already made and you are munching your way through. looks like by the time you exhaust that stash you should be ready for bigger finger foods and then on to whatever daddy and i are eating, no more separate meals for baby girl! your nickname officially is 'bug'! not sure how that came out fully but it started because you are the cutest little bug and your were teething and bugging me so it became a term of endearment to keep my cool while you fussed. so proud of you every day and love you more and more all the time. you didn't make it in the zellers contest, very disappointed but at least i tried. two more weeks and we will be in victoria to see aunty fuchsia and grandma! can't wait for that trip! costumes are almost all done for halloween, the peter pan theme is turning out really well this year. mommy is getting a little nervous, there may be a little brother or sister in the works although we are really hoping not, my af is a week late, crossing fingers that it is just because mommy started eating beef again and it seems to have amped up the milk supply, you will learn these things when mommy teaches you all about babies and where they come from when you are older. upscale, i am still breastfeeding, it's been over 6 months now and things seem to be going well! well that would be you with the hiccups, i should go rescue you from the tent and see what we can do about them! Love you always, mom!

wow you just keep on growing and learning and going so fast! you can sit on your own now, not all the time and it still seems to be a big production of rolling around trying to get the right angle but you do it, daddy has seen it, i keep missing it! i watch you squirm and fuss and then i blink and your up! oh well, lots of time to see it you do this and many more wonderful things! you and daddy are getting a lot better at being just the two of you, i had to run to the store yest and left you home with daddy the second he walked in the door and by the time i got back (45 min) you barely even noticed i was gone, you were playing in your highchair with daddy eating your second helping of cereal!! you have your first cold, some sinus congestion, a little coughing and sneezing, it's not to bad though and i may not have even noticed if it weren't for the fact that you snuffle so much when you breastfeed! ps, you HATE the sinus bulb and seem to be trying really hard to learn how to blow your nose! i watched you trying to blow into your blanket last night! guess it's a bonus that daddy was sick the other week and you got such a kick out of watching him blow his nose! you are officially up to finger foods as long as they are cubed/diced small, that pincher grip is getting better and better all the time and you love to sit in your highchair and eat rice puffs while mommy putters around in the kitchen cleaning or baking, i love this! you love to play on the floor these days and it means that mommy has to vacuum way more often now to keep up with the hair and stuff that gets all over. crawling is almost there! you can get up on all fours and rock and move one knee forward before flopping down on your stomach and doing the worm to get where you want to (see old 80's dance styles!) although you still do the military belly crawl more often than not. you are also trying to stand  mommy needs to get you something that you can stand and play on other than the coffee table (which you are a pro at) so you can learn to get up on your own, you have the basics but your arms are not quite long enough to get you high enough to get upright! you love to play 'fetch' where you drop it and we go get it or you drop it and then you go get it! raspberries are your new favourite mode of communication! and when daddy does 'flying baby' with you, you light up and 'start your engines' by blowing lots and lots of raspberries and then daddy flies you around the room until you start giggling too much keep up the raspberries!!! how did we ever entertain ourselves before you?!! the biting is getting better, but you really dislike mommies stern voice (duh!) and quite often will cry even though i'm the one that got hurt! for now i take is as your 'im sorry' since it usually involves a very loving look and a hug through your tears and then you are more gentle. on friday we are going on a plane!! we are going to see aunty fuchsia and her family and grandma for a whole week! not sure what to expect from the plane ride but at least it's a short trip (1 1/2 hours) so whatever it is will be over soon! if plans pan out the way they look you will get to see your first real forest and maybe some fish (caution, this time of year is stinks pretty bad!) have to look up when the salmon run is for where we are going.
as for learning to make great cakes for your birthdays, this is the latest cake i made, daddy is soooo impressed with my progress and so happy to know that his little girl will have the best cakes on the block, and all made by mommy!

this one still needs to be steamed but you can see what's been done! the whole thing is edible (tag bow and all!) and only took a total of about 8-9 hours (spread out over a few days so that thing could dry properly!) i am really having fun with this and thank aunty robin big time for helping with equipment to do it properly! she has bought mommy a few things now that have made a huge difference! the right tools for the job are honestly a very good idea! well that's about it for now, mommy's brain is starting to ask for more sleep.
love you always, mom!

tomorrow we fly!! i have such mixed feelings about this, excited and nervous and happy and scared! i have know idea what to expect despite all the advice and stories from other moms. your sinus cold is clearing but still there from time to time so i'm hoping that won't cause any undo irritation to you. the plan for now is to play and play hard in the lobby while waiting to board, keep you distracted while boarding and bf for take off, hopefully you will do a good nap (1 1/2 hour flight) and i can wake you for landing and bf again as you usually do when you wake up. we have a busy week ahead of us and i can't wait to show you all the sights and ppl! Aunty fuchsia has been busy on her end prep'ing things for our arrival and i am so thankful to have such a wonderful bff, i hope that at some point in your life you are able to make a friend who is even half the person she is to me! grandma is overjoyed to meet you and is already planning on spending her next two months of income on you! dinner out, toys from sears (one very cool doll that she already bought you) and then pics. the salmon are spawning so we are def planning a trip to goldstream park, daddy will love the forest and never want to come home!! the costumes are almost all set now except for mine, the dress i had got wrecked and now i have to find something else to pull off 'wendy' by sunday, thinking of just getting something while we are there. funding seems to have come together and we should be set to have some fun and still make all the bills on time! last nights sleep was unacceptable by the way! 2:30am is not bedtime, mommy is not your bed and 5am is the wrong time to wake me up after a night like that, thankfully daddy was still home and he handled getting you up and changing bum while mommy tried to reign in a little temper tantrum. you will find that while mommy is all gung ho and gets things done best in the morning, it is not because i am a morning person, i hate mornings and they are for resting and puttering and waking up, i just run best on autopilot! oh and a couple cups of coffee! so much to do today but have to wait till you wake up officially (yes you went back to sleep, woke me up again around 8:30 then went back to sleep again) so i am taking this time now to do my quiet morning rituals before the mommy tornado hits the house. papa will be coming up to watch you while i run around cleaning and packing, we are hoping to get everything ready tonight so that all we have to do is wake up, get dressed and go tom, we leave at 10 am. well just wanted to let you know where things stand today, you are doing great, some great things coming home for you (i can't wait to shop in aunty fuchsia's basement for your next set of clothes, then come home and go through the very large suitcase of clothes that i have here for you that i forgot about! now that it should mostly fit you!) keep growing and learning the way you are and we will be fine! you sit like a pro now and rarely fall over, although last night i almost pee'd myself, you do this head tilt to look at things sometimes and you did it while sitting and it threw you off balance and you fell backwards! usually you can put your hands out to stop yourself now but backwards is a different story! you are eating soo great now too, you love to feed yourself and mommy has gotten to the point of just cutting up some of my dinner for you as you love it off my plate onto your tray. can't wait to see what you learn from kaiya! well gotta go do some more stuff, love you always, MOM!

so it's been a little longer than i had planned but here i am! the trip went great. followed instructions and did not feed when we left, however you did great (at least until mommy beaned you in the forehead with the seat back tray, oops!) everyone was very impressed at how well you did since you were awake the whole flight and only really fussed on landing, but edmonton is 2500ft above see level and victoria is like 5ft so the air pressure change alone on landing would have bugged anyone (and did bug the lady beside us, so she was really impressed!) you didn't scream you just moaned and whined! coming home was different, we were in the middle of the plane so mommy just went ahead and fed you and as a result you slept the whole way! the trip itself was fantastic! we are already planning on doing it again next year (something we weren't going to because daddy and i wanted to plan our 10 year anniv, but that's 4 years away and this was too fun not to do again!) had a blast with aunty fuchsia and her family, grandma was head over heels in love with you and spoiled us all rotten! it seems that she has been saving her pennies since we told her we were preg, either that or she budgeted to be in debt for a while, took us all out for dinner (6 adults+herself+ you and Kaiya) at boston pizza, def not the cheapest place around! plus she spoiled us by helping out with the pictures, and went half on a really cool fisher price musical table for you! the pictures were fantastic and we ended up getting a whole package, thank goodness for mommy getting the smile saver card way back when! grandma got a special treat, the way she went into the studio on her scooter, the handle bars were on the right, so mommy put the decorative stairs under grandma's feet and we cradled you in her right arm (her good one at this point, i am hoping that the MS doesn't get worse before you get to know her.) and we got pictures of just the two of you. this has been her greatest fear with having a grandchild, that she would never be able to hold you safely, and now she has pics of it!!! we all almost cried! we also went to goldstream park to watch the salmon spawning. you and daddy were sooo cute looking at all the nature! my little nature bug that you are now! i had to introduce each tree to you and then when you touched it you beamed and giggled and smiled and had so much fun. and daddy, it turns out, has three extra smile lines that run up his cheeks to his eyes! the picture looked like he had been mauled by something and clawed up, but he was just smiling!
you are currently teething again and this is now the fourth time i've sat down to write this! you don't want to sleep for any length of time and naps are getting harder and harder to get you down for. also looks like you have some intestinal something going on, IBS or gas or something as your belly button has been sticking out for about three weeks now and the doc said that it wasn't healed on the inside so it may have herniated, we go in to see him on monday to find out what's going on. you are potty training now and doing very well, it's called elimination communication now and basically means that while we are not focused on getting you to be fully potty trained we are working on signals and concepts. you can now use sign language to tell me that you need to go to the bathroom and consistently go poop in the potty without dirty diapers (up to 5 times one day!) it's been over a week and the only poo was my fault, i didn't get out of bed fast enough, but you did hold in as much as you could until we got to the potty! pee's are really hit or miss, you sometimes signal but mostly just for poops. for your age and just starting out you are doing fantastic and we are all so proud of you!! well i'm going to go now and try to get some sleep before you wake up again, we have an early day tom, mommy is taking you to a baby fair (weestock 2010 holiday edition!) and we leave at 9:30am! love you always, mommy!

so we saw the doc yest and it looks like surgery. you have a retractible herniated umbilicus, basically means that your belly button didn't heal properly when you were born and now the intestines are putting pressure on the hole. there is some risk of strangulation with this (the intestine can poke through the hole and then gets squeezed off by the base of the hole and well, you can imagine the problems that would cause) but so far so good you don't seem to be showing signs of that. good news is that mommy caught it early and it's an easy day surgery at the stollery. bad news, is that it means you have to go for day surgery. this is called a congenital problem which means that it was present at birth and in most cases it heals itself by 12 months (or 5 years depending on what research you read!) but yours is getting bigger not smaller. doc had wanted to wait till 12 months to see if it would heal (see your 6 month doc check up notes) but mommy and daddy noticed that it was getting worse so i took you in early, doc gave me brownie points for that because it means we caught it before it got dangerous! so now i am waiting on a call to let me know when and how and all the wonderful details, hoping that there will be a meeting with the specialist (pediatric surgeon) before hand so i can ask questions and get the full information. most surgeries that are planned have a pre-op appointment with the doc to make sure that you are fit for surgery and know all the details for preparation. good news is that all the surgeons for this are at the stollery at the u of a which is a great childrens hospital program so i have confidence that you will be in good hands. mommy has some major mommy guilt over this even though i know there is no need, there is nothing that we did or didn't do to cause this and i've done the best thing that i can in observing the issue and responding promptly. but it's a mommy thing! i know it's not because i stepped on a bug when i was 8 but part of me can't help but feel responsible, this is the same guilt that makes moms try to be supermom and do everything at once, and feel bad when they aren't the best mom in the world by any and all definitions! totally irrational but hey it keeps us grounded. you still aren't sttn again and i think it is because of the discomfort you are experiencing with this. although i'm not sure it seems to be that you have to poop at night and it just won't happen. trying to make you comfortable as i can and at the same time not make a big deal out of this, i want you to know that it's life as normal until the recovery comes and then i can pamper the heck out of you for a little bit, then back to normal. with you being so active, this is the part that i'm really dreading, i don't know what the restrictions will be but i am sure that there will be some for at least the first little while. daddy is being supper supportive while mommy wrestles with all the emotions that come with news like this. i hope that you never have to deal with it, but if you do at least i will be able to share some experience. aunty fuchsia is my sanity right now with this as she just dealt with a similar situation as kai went for tear duct surgery, same deal, day surgery, routine procedure, just something that happens, so she is there for me with some experience as well as understanding the mommy guilt. i hope that you are able to make a friend in your life like this that you know you can count on and that you are grateful counts on you. these friends are a basic necessity in life sometimes, even if it's just for coffee or a phone call, they can keep you grounded, help pick you up to wonderful heights and are more than just family. i will try to find this wonderful passage that was emailed to me ages ago called friends reason, season or lifetime. it really has helped me to accept that not all friends are there forever and the ones that are, truly are! well that's about it for now i guess, mommy has some help coming over later this morning for me to talk it all out and i hope that you are on good behaviour! going to go out to the veggie store as daddy gets home so he can sneak in for a nap before you see him (you want him if you see him so naps don't happen!) and after the last week of interrupting everyones sleep, moaning and crying and whining in you sleep and then bouncing off the walls all day, daddy NEEDS some sleep, he's been so good to both of us and today especially he started work early and so had to get up extra early. lots of love always, mom!

Hello my little love! well you are sleeping, daddy is sleeping and mommy knows that the second i lay down you will both wake up so i'm not even going to try! it's only 4:40pm and i did nap with you today so it's all good. well, it seems that pears are mommy's new best friend, after a rough start with them earlier on, you seem to be doing great with them and guess what... your belly button is doing great! may not need surgery! you were just really bunged up it seems and that was aggravating the problem, got you cleared out and life is good again, pears were the trick! you are starting to sleep longer at night again too. it seems that you needed more than just booby at bedtime so we added a bedtime snack and so far so good. daddy just got word from the doc that the vasectomy was successful and he is now clear so it's official, you are a one of a kind one and only! christmas looks to be pretty great too, we got you a few new toys and all the decorations are bought and up (will just need a bigger tree when we get a house) for now the 4ft tree is on the old holly hobby table inside the playpen and seems to be working great for keeping you and the cats off of it! you are starting to stand by yourself without support, still need a little help getting up but you are working on it, and the other day you took three steps all by yourself. i think you are still a little unsure of your ability to walk, even though i've been watching you and i know you could do it if you were ready. we are not pushing it though, if you want to hold hands then that's just fine with us! soon enough you'll be running around and the last thing you'll want to do it hold our hands so we are both trying to enjoy it while it lasts! you crawl like there's no tom though and are really fast! hoping to get you into the mall this week for a weigh and measure, you are getting so big, but at the same time sometimes i look at you and you seem so small. with christmas fast approaching i cant help but look at you and want to cry happy tears sometimes that i get to share this life with you and teach you all the little things. christmas is supposed to be a time of family and love and sharing and compassion and i hope that by the time you are reading this, that we have taught you these things. presents are good, but the good feelings are supposed to be more important. you saw santa last week, you did pretty good and didn't freak out too much! it was the second time you had seen a santa and we got a picture this time. you even got a free stuffed reindeer because it was your first pic with santa! you love it! there are so many things that i want you to know that it's hard to get them out sometimes. i talk to you when you are asleep in my arms and hope that you will someday understand, through all the good times and bad, no matter how frustrated or sad or happy or whatever, i will always love you more than you will know and hope that somewhere in your life you find someone that means so much to you! i dread the teenage years of you hating me (hey, it's inevitable at some point as you struggle to secure your own life and place!) and hope that it's not too bad and doesn't last long! you are my happy place, my shining thought and my reason for getting out of bed in the morning (usually because you've woken me up hours before i'm ready! lol!) i love you with all my heart! love always, mom!
