It is definitely a girl name to me. I'm kind of neutral about it. I don't love it, but I don't mind it either.
I think girl. I'm not really keen on it though. It would probably get nicknamed to Laynie, which also doesn't ring my bell.
My cousin is Michael Layne ___, and his little boy is Layne Michael. I also have another cousin named Lane (male). I think its a cute name, country-ish, wasn't that the main character in 8 seconds? Anyhow, I prefer it for a boy, but maybe because I love Lainee for a girl, and not the nickname Layne for it.
Honestly when I hear the name "Layne" I think of the character off Gilmore Girls. Lol, but then again my daughter's name is Lorelei and it's because I watched a marathon of that show and the name grew on me!
Anyway, I have heard it as a boy or girl name and I think it's an uncommon name. I don't think it's a bad name, kind of cute and unique.
I like it for boy or girl. Boy - Lane and Girl - Layne...the 'Y' to me means girl. I really like the nickname Lanie if it were a girl.
And yes PP, it was in the movie 8 Seconds. The guys name that movie was about was Lane Frost.
I like it because it's different... but it definitely sounds more feminine than masculine to me... but I'm on the fence about it.
Its become a very common name, especially for middle names here.
Its a surname in my husbands family, and all of the girls of the last 4 generations, aside from my daughter, all have Lane as a middle name. (My DD has my Mom's name as her middle name and her twin brother is a III - one named for each side).
