Has anyone named or is thinking of naming their child after a character in a book, movie, etc??
Am I completely bonkers for wanting to?
I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, and ever since I read the name and fell in love with the character, I've wanted to name my first son Severus.
I also am a huge fan of unique/uncommon names. I grew up with the name Nicole, and always had at least 3 other Nicole's in every class, and I HATED it.
Soo... not that anything is going to sway me after wanting this name for so long... but.... opinions?
How do you pronounce it? I want to say sever-us...
It's not really my style of name... but as far as naming your child after a character in a book or the like, I guess I kind of did that with dd so I don't see anything wrong with that LOL I didn't really name her *after* the character herself, but that is the first place I heard/saw her name and fell in love with it... and decided to use it
I did.. and ive gotten alittle flack from family for it but i dont care because i love the name.
ok- backstory.. i heard the name Paxton in a movie me and DH saw i theatres. The movie? lol thats the part that bugs my family.... it was Hostel. like the blood and gore horror movie Hostel. i love horror movies so its kinda fitting that his name came from one.
The main characters name is Paxton. i immediately LOVED it. and thats the story of my little boys name from a creepy gory movie... at least its a cool story to tell him when hes older.

I've done that with a few of my kids. My son, Harrison Davis, got both first and middle names from the show TruCalling, my other son Elliott's first name we got from Law and Order SVU, and my son Callum got his first name from an actor we like (Callum Blue) and middle name McKay from a character from Stargate Atlantis.
I think if you like the name, then use it! It shouldn't matter where it came from, and your family will get used to it
I LOVE the name Severus (and I'm also a huge HP fan!). I wish I could have talked my DH into a similar name

Sorry, I don't usually post on this board but your thread reminded me of this link a friend sent me this morning:
Basically, if you end up having a baby on 11/11/11 and name it after the main character (Dovahkiin) in this video game (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim) which comes out on 11/11/11 they will give you a massive prize...yet to be announced.
As DH and I are HUGE video game addicts, we are considering it. One of the prizes they mentioned was unlimited lifetime free games via Steam which would be AWESOME!
Ok - I know it's cheesy but still - could be fun right? And it's not a horrible name?

I say if you like the name, use it, regarldess of where it comes from. I don't think there is anything wrong with naming after a character. With that being said, Severus isn't really my taste, but I know how you feel about common names as my name is Melissa. That's probably why my girls' names are Hadley and Malia.

I have a few really "out there" names picked out for baby number two. My hubby conned me into naming our first born Kaylee, when I wanted to name her AnnaLeigh. But I get the 2nd babys name, I want it to be unique. Something that stands out and will be remembered! lol Who cares where the name came from as long as you love it!
