Trying to find a "family" name

I really want to give my baby a middle name from the family, particularly my grandparents, but my side of the family has a bunch of not so pretty names. My Middle name was from my Great-grandma Josephine. I hated it growing up but have come to love it and appreciate the history. My baby's GG's are named Bernice and Stella, I never met Stella but my Grandma Bernice was a big influence in my life and I would love to honor her. What do you think of the middle name Bernice, and do you think my daughter would hate me for giving it to her. As far as a boy, I think I would have to look at my Hubby's side of the family b/c those name are even worse, Elmer and Vernon. I would love to give my daughter a name that I can tell her belonged to a strong, loving, smart woman who she can look up to, but I also don't want her to hate her name because it's old-fashioned. What do you think?

I actually like the name Stella. I do think Bernice is a little old fashion, but not a bad middle name at all. Both of my girls have middle names after people. I like that tradition. I don't think it would be bad as middle names don't get used that often. If you really don't like the names, you could always try to find some version that you like more.

I actually like Bernice over Stella. The only thing I would keep in mind, is I know some people name their first born after family and then when they have more children it gets harder because they still want their other children to feel they have a special name/named after family. kwim?

Not really a huge fan of Stella or Bernice, but I understand wanting to use a family name. What were their middles names? Or maiden names? Are those better or could they be slightly altered to be more 'modern'? We used DH grandmother's maiden name for DD middle name (McCann).

My Nana had the same issue when naming her children she wanted to use family names for middle names, but had names like Maude and Ada to choose from, so she adapted Ada and gave my Mum the middle name Adele.

My niece's mn is Bernice, she hasn't had any problems with it. But she has always been part of the cool crowd and has a simple first name

I think Stella is fine too. i actually think it is gaining more popularity.

What is Bernice's middle name or did she go by a nick name?

Ya maybe use Bernice mname or her maider name... good idea.
Or just go with it, it's not that bad! I love the idea cause it's has a meaning. We chose our son middle name because of our honeymoon destination. He middle name is Lucas and we went to Cabo San Lucas for our honey moon.

She is actually Rachel B. But her dad sometimes calls her Bernie.

I'm not a fan of Bernice or Stella.

Maybe Bernadette?
Maybe Ella, Elle, Ellie, Ellen or Eleanor? (as a take off of Stella)

I think that since Bernice is the GG you were closer to, that you should go ahead with it. Middle names really aren't used that much anyway. I do think that using her maiden name might be an option (depending on what it is).

If this baby had been a girl, we were going to name her after my grandmother (June), but since it's a boy, we're using my grandmother's maiden name (Thomas) as a middle name for our son. My name is a family name and I always loved that.

I really like Stella, not a huge fan of Bernice, but because you know the person, it can work. Wink Or you could use Rachel. Wink

All four of our children have family names as middle names. Sometimes it was hard to find the right one. Our dd's middle name is Arlene after her paternal gg, and though I was not a huge fan at first, it fits her, and she thinks her middle name is beautiful, because we always tell her what a special person her gg was, and the wonderful things she did. Our ds' middle name is my grandfather's middle name, because Donald just didn't do it for me, so we chose Reed. Our 3rd son's middle name is his grandfather's middle name as well, since Ronald didn't work for us either. Wink And our last son's middle name is after my great grandfather, John, who was also a twin, so I wanted one of them to have his name. Smile I love using family names, and we try to frequently tell them why we chose those names, the characteristics of those we honored. I think giving them pride in the name helps them to appreciate the name. Smile

I kept my childrens middle name 'family' names. My son got my maiden name and my daughter got my DH's grandmother maiden name. For this baby I'm out of ideas so I'm going with a name that 'goes' with the first name I've picked out.

not a huge fan of the name, but LOVE the idea behind it. Both my girls have middle names after my mom and my grandmom.

However, my middle name is Louise and I got made fun of all the time in school. they used every nickname for it. I used to give my parents such a hard time for giving me such an "old lady name" However, as a grown adult I have learned to love my name and appreciate it.

Sadly my aunt suggested it. lol. She really wanted them to have twin names (she was pregnant with twins, but lost them early on some years before). The other one she pushed for, Mark and Mac, because my dad's middle name is Mark, and my maternal grandpa went by Mac. Vetoed those too. lol

My son is Peter (my mothers madien name) Davis (son of David, and he is)
My DD is Tessa (the short form of my GG's Teressa) Karmella (all the girls on DH's family had K middle names)
2nd son Heath (Heath ledger died when I was prego) Gregory (gregorie was my GG's madien name)

I love for the baby in my belly but we are still talking about it , Loren (after my mom Lorraine) Drew (short for Andrew my SO's middle name) Still a fear that Loren is to close to Lauren but then hope that even if he has an issue with it someday he will understand why we did it.

As you can see I am a huge fan of family names and I think I am that way because I am Julianna Elizabeth because my mom's two gg's Anna and Elizabeth and I was due in July so she stuck my due date month on before them.

For you list I love Stella.

What about a combo of Bella?
