My father passed away suddenly about a month before we became pregnant. I like the idea of honoring him via my son's middle name (if I can get DH on board), however I know that my father did not really like his own first name. His middle name was John but we already have several Johns and a Jon in the family. My DH tends to like unique middle names so I don't know if a name that hints at my father's favorite hobbies (reading and traveling) or his profession (teacher) would also work. Any thoughts?
Even though you already have several John's in the family, I wouldn't keep that from using it if you want to.
Did your father have a favorite author? Maybe you could use the author's name. What did he teach?

I think John would be too plain for DH's taste, also it was originally my paternal grandfather's name so I feel like it might be honoring him more than my father (which is not a bad thing but not my original intent).
I can't think off the top of my head a favorite author and I think my mom may have given away most of his books unfortunately. He tended to like non-fiction. He taught math, physics and chemistry.
There was a physicist named John Dalton that was one of the original to propose the idea of atoms as the smallest building blocks. So maybe Dalton. I'll keep thinking as I have a background in chemistry.
Also, do you know what his first name will be? What letter does your last name start with and how many syllables is it?

We are not 100% on first name yet. Scientist and mathematician names may be a good path as DH is an engineer. I was already told that the name Tesla is too overused in the science circles...I haven't run into it but whatever. Was also told that Edison is out because DH thinks he didn't deserve credit for most of his patents. Who knew naming a child could turn into such a discussion about the merits of people in history
As a side note we have been overlooking "C" names because both our names start with it however may consider for middle name.
What about your father's last name/your maiden name?
