My shoulders seize, my arms pull..... I can barely wrap her in front carry without pulling muscles trying to get the wrap around my back and across/over my shoulders, but then when I need to tie, attempting to pull tight I pull muscles. *sigh*
Today, I tried back carry... I couldn't get it to go over her bum and across and over. My 8 year old is horrible at following directions (I'm not so great at giving them, too) and I couldn't do it with his help.
Does it get easier? or does my material need more give?
One, as the material softens it will get a bit easier. Two, wrapping with a woven does have the highest learning curve, but don't worry most people end up really appreciating wrapping in the end.
My biggest advice is to watch videos and wrap in front of a mirror.
What back carry did you try?
What front carry is giving your trouble?
I did have some interesting adventures learning to wrap last winter (didn't have a woven till January!). I'd often wrap kidless while watching a video at the computer. Then I moved to doing it with DS in front of the computer with DH playing spotter (and laughing at me *sigh*) OR I'd chance my memory and do it in front of a mirror. Mirror helped the most. I just stuck to one back carry at first and then realized that I was always having the same issue. Searching around let me to believe that it wasn't the best back carry for me and for DS, so I moved to another one. But learning that first carry meant that learning a second was way easier.
Well, the problem with front carry is that my wrap that I made is simply too short to tie in the front and tying in the back makes me pull muscles to get it tight enough. Can you say "friction?" I knew you could.
Washed and dried my wrap and tried back carry again.. in front of a mirror next to my bed.
Neglected to have DH get a pic of the front. The shoulder straps were not far enough onto my body and after a about 10 minutes, she started slipping down my arm. As you can see, the back isn't perfect...
That's a great start!
I have yet to do the wiggle proof back carry. Right now with pregnancy I'm sticking to two carries - ruck tied in front and double hammock. I can do them in my sleep and they're comfortable for me. Rucks don't take much fabric at all (my tails hang to my knees in my longer wraps). I can double hammock in a size 5 wrap (mine is a bit long so probably 4.3 meters). I'm tying in the tippy tails right now between the big toddler and me not being so small, but it's secure!. lol.
The back cross carry was a fail for me. It's the back carry brother to the FCC (front cross carry). I started off with the BWCC (brother to the front wrap cross carry) and while I was getting the carry down it wasnt comfortable for my shoulders.
Big difference between 5.2 meters and 5.2 yards!
I have no doubt with your size you can pull off a FWCC and a FCC with your wrap as long as it hasn't shrunk too much. FCC I had a tail left when I did that last winter. What I like about it is that it was a poppable carry, so I could tie it first and then slip in my son. I could then take the time to slowly tighten each line (don't pull on the whole wrap, but rather a couple of inches at a time!) and really concentrate on spreading the wrap evenly across my back (the crosses) and across my son's back. I was also able to get a good seat for him.
I haven't spent any time recently updating the wrapping thread with new videos, but if there's a carry you're determined on I have ran across tons of videos!
I don't remember. I want to say about 26" wide, and then I folded it in half and tapered the edges and hemmed it (folded) so it's really only about 13" and I don't think it's wide enough. But don't want to go through all the work to un-hem it and re-hem it.
DH is strangely encouraging me to go buy a prettier fabric and learn from my mistakes of this one. So I may just do that.. but I don't want to buy a fabric that won't hold her for a long time.
I REALLY want a back carry where she can fall asleep and fall INTO me instead of away from me like she does in the Ergo. That way, I can still get laundry and cooking done. I can't do anything with her in front carry anymore cause she's in the way (view or otherwise).
