    Default Woven wrap advice

    Paging Jackie!

I'm ready to dive into wovens! I've been babywearing since my 3rd was born. My stash includes a Solly stretch wrap, babyhawk, beco butterfly, and an original boba. With 5 kids I find myself wanting to do back carries, it's just easier to help my other kids when the baby isn't occupying the front of me. But I find that my SSC's don't offer much support, and I'm not a huge fan of having a buckle across my chest/boobs! Plus i think a woven would be more comfy for baby.

I really love the look of the Girasol rainbows. Would that be an okay first wrap? Are they supportive enough to carry a toddler? And are they hot in the summer? We hike a lot so I definitely don't want something that will overheat us both! Ive read that Didymos makes amazing wraps but they seem more spendy than the Girasol, and i definitely lean more towards bold stripes. I haven't fallen in love with the look of the Didymos yet. I don't have a huge budget, but I've been stalking Craigslist in many cities hoping to score a nice used wrap. Buying off a FSOT board makes me a little nervous just because I don't frequent forums much.

So should I go for a Girasol now, and maybe invest in a more supportive carrier down the road? Or is there another brand out there that you recommend? Right now my youngest is almost 6mo and 17lbs. I'm thinking a size 6 would be right for me, I'm 5'7" and 170lbs. Still working in shedding that baby weight!

Thanks for your help and advice!

Thanks Wendy for the alert! I'm currently out of town. LOL

Girasols are good wraps. It's debated hotly among the community if they're toddler worthy or not. I have a visiting Gira Big Sur and I don't like it at all with my toddler, but it's fine for my baby. I would not call it a summer wrap.

If you want to do a multilayer back carry in the summer you'd want a thin wrap. My favorite for a one and only are Storch wraps. I have a stripe - beastly to break in, but thin and supportive. I'll still use it very happily with my 30 lb toddler. I also have a storch leo - not as thin, but looser weave so breathable and I'll happily use it with both kids! Leos are much prettier in person than in their stock photos!
Didymos waves (cotton) are thin, breathable, ooooooooh so pretty, bouncy, and pretty much my favorite wrap ever for summer. Many feel they're not as supportive above 25 lbs, but I had no issues last summer while pregnant with Aiden at 27/28 lbs!
And I do think a size 6 would work well for you!

Natibaby makes amazing wraps. I love their cotton wraps and you can find them around $100 on swap, particularly their striped ones. They are a tad thicker though and probably not the best for summer wearing, though I've heard they do have thinner ones too. I really love my Indio (Didy) for a cooler wrap and so far that is my go to wrap for anything outdoors, but my 1 year old is now 25lb and it can get a little bitey after a while. I still haven't found the perfect summer wrap, but not sure it exists since my DS and I are both furnaces. I recently bought some woven 100% linen fabric and am planning on making a wrap out of it. We'll see how it works. Kokadi makes great wraps that are thin and supportive.

I think a size 6 would work really well for you for most carries. I'm your height and a little heavier than you and a 6 works great for us. If you can't find the perfect 6, you might try a 4 since that is the perfect length for me to do a RTIF. (Ruck Tied in Front) Which I imagine would be a great carry for you when you are busy dealing with 4 other kids.

Thanks so much Jackie and Anna! I do love the Didymos waves. I'll have to look more at Storch and Natibaby too. I just wish they weren't so expensive. There are so many pretty wraps, I want one for every day of the week! I've been shopping around at various websites, and its so frustrating to fall in love with a wrap, but they don't have it in my size! I'll have to look at more info on the carry you mentioned, Anna cause seems like 4's are much easier to come by!! I'm so excited i can hardly stand it!

Online sites to check out: The Blueberry Tree (has a bargain barrel!), Frogmama (wraps appear on clearance from time to time), Marsupial Mamas (sign up for newsletter to hear about discounts and sales), Birdie's Room (has a clearance section - just didymos wraps), Risaroo (newsletter for discounts), and I know I'm forgetting a couple....
